KILLING EXHAUST DRONE W/ VIBRANT RESONATOR

Upgrading to APR Stage 2 yielded great results, but also introduced a prominent exhaust drone , starting at 2800 rpm, even with an otherwise-factory exhaust system. I replaced the factory front muffler/resonator with a Vibrant 17950 stainless steel resonator at the advice of "GTI Jake" (incorrectly credited in the video) at GolfMk7.com. The results were exactly what I wanted, effectively killing the unwanted drone. See this video for a comparison.

People confuse me. Cant people understand that although a resonator makes a cars exhaust slightly quieter, it also greatly redueces drone. Everyone is different but man, I could not sit through a droning car on my way to work all day. This is a smart move.

I got 2 resonators on my ride, and it sounds great. The ride already had 1 resonator on it, but muffler fully rusted out at the seams, from 1 end to other end, muffler was removed and tossed out, I had a resonator kicking around extended the pipe on it, welded it on, and installed it, and it sounds great.

I don't know what car you're treating. If your exhaust comes together into one pipe at any point, then I'd say to start with one and see how it sounds. If you have a V6/V8 with two separate exhaust systems, then you'll need one for each side. Remember: I'm sharing how this affected my 2.0T Volkswagen. You mileage may vary. Good Luck!

I have a 2.0 TSI 280hp passat with the stock cat. So my setup is stock cat - vibrant short resonator - exhaust cutout. Thanks for the review. About to put the APR EFR Stage 3 turbo kit on my GTI, minus their garbage wastegate and software, and got a little worried when I noticed the DP doesn't have a res. Vibrant 17950 will be the perfect midpipe between the APR Stage 3 DP and the rest of my CircuitWerks v2 TBE! I, too, am getting it based on the recommendations of GTI Jake from the golfmk7 forums. Huge thank you to you!! Bought a catted ARM downpipe mated to OEM resonator and cat back and the drone was awful, borderline Honda style. Just had the Vibrant 17930 (2.5” in/out) installed to replace stock resonator and it’s night and day. DSG farts are more manageable as they were epic loud prior to resonator swap as well. No drone, sounds perfect and stealthy until you get on it. Was about to uninstall downpipe before I stumbled upon this video and review. Thanks for all your efforts!! Subscribed.

I might, assuming that you have dual exhausts. I went through a series of experiments that has brought me back to more exhaust components to reduce the noise. I got tired of the noise REALLY fast. Ryan - The discussion that I linked in my write-up (see the link in the description above) specifically said NOT to choose the "ultra quiet." I'm not sure why. The author of the topic does A LOT of exhaust work, so I trusted his judgement. I have a 6MT, so no "DSG farts." But I do get an occasional gurgle. Might be a little late, but it answers the question. pulled directly from the write-up: "In short, believe the hype! The Vibrant standard 17950 or 17930 resonator, not the “Ultra Quiet” series, WILL curb unwanted drone in our cars with an aftermarket downpipe. At just $77 through Amazon, it is possibly the most effective solution for the money!" Perhaps the writer thought the ultra quiet series is just too expensive to justify the gains

Is drone noticeable to the people outside the vehicle or is it mainly an interior issue? I just got a free flowing exhaust installed on my car and from the revs I heard at the shop it sounded great... however there is a lot of interior drone pretty much from everything below 4k rpm. It's strange because when I have it at WOT at high rpms it sounds phenomenal and there is no drone at all. I am planning on throwing two vibrants on my system because it is a dual setup but trying to decide which ones.. don't want to go too long and mute my exhaust and don't want to go to short and do nothing.
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI Год назад
MY drone was subtle outside of the car. Plus, it was only in the narrow bandwidth of 2800-3300 rpm. So, everything was good outside of that area. To be honest, it's all a crap-shoot... or an experiment, depending on how you want to label it. The engineers who designed our factory exhausts are pretty smart. Everything we do to alter the tone deviates from their design and requires new experimentation. Good Luck!

On a 2016 TT, I tried to do this with a 17950 3" resonaator on my unitronic downpipe but there wasn't enough clearance. Too close to the heat shield and drive shaft, unfortunately. @StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 5 лет назад
Logan - Check out my article at stealthgti.com/2018/04/09/vibrant-17950-resonator/. In short, your stock resonator was designed to work with your factory system. A downpipe changes the resonance, which drives a need for a different resonator. As a result, you'll get better results by replacing the stock resonator for one designed to work with your new frequencies. See the article for more details. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

I agree that the weld was terrible! However, there was going to be a reducer in the system someplace because the downpipe is three inches. Hey man. My civic 8th is on a full exhaust system. It's loud but just okay -- on the outside. But inside the cabin, the drone is insanely loud it literally hurts my ears. I was recommended to place another resonator (a total of two resonators would be installed then). My concern is, by having 2 resonators would it affect the setup of my full exhaust? Would it be significantly quieter? And Most importantly, would it guarantee to reduce (or eliminate) the drone? If this helps, My current resonator is 22". I'm not yet sure what size would be placed for the second resonator

Now with stage 2, and catted down pipe and res delete, the exhaust sounds ricey! Thank you for this informative video! I have a stock 2004 Nissan Armada which has a V8 and 3 inch pipe. I have owned it since new and love the car but hate the drone that I hear inside the cabin at typical cruising speeds. My desire it to eliminate this drone and hope to make this car as quiet as possible. Would this resonator do that for me or do I still need to dig deeper? I am trying to find a relatively simple and cost effective solution.
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 5 лет назад
Dan - I'm not certain. Is your system stock? My GTI's exhaust is modified with an aftermarket downpipe. Therefore, I had already deviated from the sound management that engineers had designed. This resonator has been tried and tested in my application and proven to be effective. If your Armada is stock, it's tough to say how this resonator will affect your sound. Perhaps someone in a Nissan forum has tested something they know to be effective? If you want to experiment, the Vibrant resonator is an inexpensive way to get started. But I'd search for things known to work with your application. Good Luck! -Scott

I opted for the 3-inch resonator for an easy fit to APR's downpipe, then used an adapter to fit to the stock axle-back. My thought was that I could easily add a 3-inch rear section later, which I did. See my Baun Performance CBE at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_yVHGpKbucQ.html for more details. Hey man not to hurt Jakes feelings but you should of went with the Ultra Quiet vibrant.. I have a Cobalt SS with a 2.0 Supercharged engine and had terrible drone. That fat muffler changed it. Also look into changing your header for a long tube for maximum torque and best acceleration and change that pipe from the header clear back to either 2.5 inch or 3 inch. You want best exhaust flow to reach all that horsepower that little engine has to offer. If you even have the car still... That is.

@PokeSource

Lol mark you don't understand the MQB platform clearly. We don't even have headers. What works on one car will not work on all cars. The 17930/17950 is engineered in such a way that specifically works best to reduce drone for the MK7. Many have tried the ultra quiet and it doesn't perform as well on our platform.

Hard to say. I installed this resonator because a VW discussion forum member with A LOT of experience said that it would work on the GTI. I cannot speak to how it will tame a different engine. John - Although I didn't state it in the video (I mentioned it in the description), the APR downpipe and Stage 2 programming gave the car much more low end torque than I'm willing to give up by going back to stock. This simple resonator tamed the pointed drone at 2800-3000 rpm without losing any power. It was a win-win! Plus, the resonator is not expensive at all. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

StealthGTI ah ok thanks for the clarifications. I'm running an axle back SS exhaust on my mazda 6 and it helped the overall power but my drone is the typical 2500-2900 that V6s have. I'm thinking about side branch hemoltz

My exhaust is louder and I love it just the initial low end sounds horrible ...I have APR downpipe to a AWE catback and cut the resonator off the catback. ..I don't wanna result in going back to regular turbo back. Will a Aftermarket vibrant help ? Do u have any knowledge of that ? 1792? Bullet ? Ultra quiet ?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 6 лет назад
Young - I cannot comment on what the Vibrant will do with your setup. However, it may help. In short, a resonator contours the tone of the sound and a muffler controls the level of the sound. I've read that Vibrant's "Ultra Quiet" is NOT the way to go. I chose the 17950 based on plenty of positive feedback. Thanks for visiting. -Scott

@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 5 лет назад
Nathan - "Loud exhaust" and "Performance" are not necessarily the same thing. I've seen plenty of cars/trucks accelerate with plenty of noise without actually accelerating brisky. HAHA! Anyway, I've added ~100 hp to my car without a significant increase in exhaust note. To me, that's a win-win. If I do a turbo swap, then I could add yet another 50 hp, for a total of 390-ish, and STILL have a relatively quiet car: STEALTH or SLEEPER. What's not to like about that? I'm in my 50's and have no need to sound like I'm compensating. ;-) Thanks for writing. -Scott

I am confused. Just what was the reason u put it on? And if we were to listen for the difference why in the world wouldn't u use full throttle for the test{the whole}? And last but not least arnt u a little old trying to get attention from ur exhaust {if in fact that was the reason}?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 5 лет назад
Zach - The reason for adding the resonator was to reduce the drone at 2800-3200 rpm. And that's also why the testing was made at those engine speeds. I only needed to show viewers full throttle once. If I'm wide open, then I'm not worried about noise. It's only when I'm driving normally during the commute that I was the car reasonably quiet. As far as my age and seeking attention, you have my goals reversed. I have the resonator to make the exhaust QUIETER because I DON'T like drawing attention to the car. Thanks for visiting. -Scott
