So sad to hear that Geordie has passed away. This was the first place I went, because the recorded version is my favourite Killing Joke song, but this live version where the vocals stop half way and you just get to listen to Geordie's guitar is just bliss. Can't believe he's gone. There was no-one like him.
- Brighter Than a Thousand Suns - Killing Joke's most polished, underrated and accessible piece of work. This CD is a must have for any music lover's collection...
A lot of similarities too with the album that psychedelic furs did that same year. The furs too a risk created a great album was a stretch just like killing joke and the Brighter album. Both bands did their videos for those albums in black and white too.
Geordie's guitar sounds so amazing. He's one of those guitar players that you just know when you hear him. He is so distinctive. Big Paul and Raven are also killing it here. I love hearing Raven's bass so well in the mix. And yes, this version is how the LP should have sounded.
I’m from L.A. and these idiot DJs on the radio never played them……..I discovered this awesome band from watching North Shore in 1987…. Bout the OST then been a huge KJ fan since!….🤙🏼
This video is the shit! and you can't deny everybody in the band looked great by that time. They all are in great shape, you can feel that vibe just watching this clip. But what i loved the most about it were those moments when Jaz's mic doesn't work, you can listen some extra instrumental moments and really enjoy that awesome Geordie and Raven synergy. Thanks for sharing!
1 month ago i was enjoying this awesome video, talking about how great Paul and Geordie played live, and now this terrible news. Paul was the nicest man in the band and a great bass player. We'll miss you a lot compadre!! LOVE and RESPECT to the mighty Raven and his family. Absent friends shall live by love. Paul Raven you'll always rule!! (As friendly and active as he was i'm sure he will be working in a new project with Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham and Ian Curtis)
- Dude...you are so right. I have the full KJ catalogue to date....but damn I always give BTATS the most play. Every song is badass. I also have the extended mixes to that release.
these songs need playing. whoever's calling the shots for the setlist is not in touch, look at drab majesty (who i like), totally referencing this song.. abandon the dave grohl album and play this stuff. i can see why they don't, but they also ignore the martin atkin years.. really good songwriting in there, doing themselves a disservice from an audience standpoint, waiting to lap it up.
drums + bass awesome, guitar fantastic. Just listen to the instrumental part here, Geordie you were a real genius, the best and my favorite guitarist. Gone too soon, sad to early ;'( RIP Geordie.
Jaz is actually playing additional keyboards AND singing during the middle part of the song (post 3 minutes). If you look closely you can see him singing into a microphone that's on a stand in front of his keyboard, but the mic must be faulty as no vocals can be heard. Great song, and sounds just as good as an instrumental as it does with vocals. Can't wait to see them at the Forum in October!!!!!!! R.I.P Raven
They need to play this live more often, or someone needs to upload better versions of this song. As it stands this is definitely the best live version I've heard thus far. One of those bands you should feel very cool for liking.
Agreed. Even with the phased out early stuff compared to the heavier stuff later on you can always tell it's him. I remember watching Top Gear one night and hearing a song playing that I'd never heard before but I knew straight away that it was Geordie playing. Turned out to be Invocation from the Hosannas record. Nobody else could make a semi-hollowbody with P90s sound so crushing yet beautiful.
That was the opening song in the Florence concert. They played it way harder than this one. Me and my friends were blown away from the center of the hall by the old punk KJ fans😁 those were good times. And Brighter is a masterpiece!
@McSnurf I definitely agree! Jaz's faulty microphone gave the song a new light and a new power. Shows how good the song is in that it works brilliantly both with and without vocals. I wish they'd play this song live again...
I used to have this on cassette, ( small plastic enclosure that housed a reel of magnetic tape on which audio information could be stored and played back from).
I totally agree here. I like the subtle change of styles during their career. From post-punk, via new-metal to uber-grunge ("total invasion"). this obviously was their doom-groove(?) era;-) cheers to ya'll old & new punx
- @lakesidepark2112 - I don't remember any controversy when this was released back in the mid 80s, except some comments from friends saying it strayed from their earlier sound. But that's KJ. What I do remember is listening to the entire CD over and over. The CD played like one long song...and, very prophetic in its description of mankind. If you were to view the video for Sanity, you can see imagery of Washington D.C., and comparing it to the decline of modern western civilisation.
@lakesidepark2112 - The beauty of it is its accessibility and just a very polished KJ release. Actually, the polished refined sound started with Eighties and just carried over to this release.
Too bad about the second mic issue, but still a great performance. In my opinion, sonically this is a more definitive version of this song...wish all of Brighter Than A Thousand Suns had a more raw production such as this!!!
There is a 2008 remastered version with much rawer guitars. "2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of this classic album by British Post-Punk legends featuring three bonus tracks. With frontman Jaz Coleman's intense persona and the band's edgy yet atmospheric wall of sound, Killing Joke always stood out amongst their contemporaries. Brighter Than A Thousand Suns was originally released in 1986 and featured remixed versions of some of the tracks instead of the original mixes. This reissue restores the original mixes and is released for the first time as the band originally intended. Bonus tracks include a non album track ('Ecstasy') plus extended mixes of 'Adorations' and 'Sanity'. Virgin."
Thanks to keyboards not so exposed in the mix and microphone problems this version sounds far way better than LP! "Instrumental" part is simply epic...
@ajarnfrankie Totally agree. What was all the controversy about when this album was released? REad something about the critics being harsh about the band straying from their original sounds and all ... I think it was their best, but that's just my opinion.
"No way bra, dis is between you and da hui", "Eh you unreal bra, you mus like get drilled real bad uh", "You took his stuff, you pound um", "Here on da Nort Shaw, we treat friends mo bettah!"
@juliogutherpereira I'm unsure if it's the theme song from North Shore. But definitely the song playing during the Rick/Chandler/Turtle Waimea scene. Regardless, cult classic movie. Great stuff.
We in our infancy, led down shining paths Shine, shine, shining paths, divine our disillusion Face our imperfection, I begin to wonder Onion peelings scattered, we've been crying crying.Open our eyes and tears run down I open my eyes and tears run down I look through your mind and tears run down And under the skies and tears run down.Look at our condition, stand on concrete dias Lovers frail and naked move like pawns on chessboards I had no idea, I had no conception Where have we all come from? Where are we all going?Open our eyes and tears run down I open my eyes and tears run down I look through your mind and tears run down And under the skies and tears run down. All these changes we shall witness I will… All these changes we shall witness I will try to understand Share your grief and your confusion, compassion in us cries No divine intervention, only moves on black and white Great schemes, great schemes are also made of these.Open our eyes and tears run down I open my eyes and tears run down I look through your mind and tears run down And under the skies and tears run down.
@corona73 : I was swept up by KJ nearly 30 years ago. Then I grew up. Then all of THIS unfolds. I suppose I imagined these lyrics ( and I haven't studied them) to be vaguely existential. I instinctively responded. I am only me. I am no salesman for anyone. I recommend any Killing Joke fan visit the metanoia website. These songs ARE about the 'movie' WE're IN!
