The way that those parents raise their kids. It is more like prison. It's like a program specifically designed to destroy someone's individuality and personality.

That was child abuse and torture! I feel sorry for the kids, but have 0 empty for their parents, especially the mother. She had it coming. She drove that kid crazy. And I don't think she got a place in heaven. Hell is where she is. The parents scared the crap out of those kids. The control their mother kept was sick. She was a narcissist. Even the damn program was her idea, because she thought she was so special. All I wonder is why James 🤔

Cathy's authoritarian regime cost her not only her life but her son's. She was abusive and her husband allowed it. Some people are more mentally able to cope than others. Yes, I'm victim blaming.

It seems like he didn't have any coping skills. His parents treated him like the hired hand. He had no friends or family that he could talk to and relate to. It's very sad.

I remember seeing the episode and one section to get tokens was “having a good attitude” which I thought was so weird almost like they weren’t allowed to be upset. When Cathy was with the other family one of the girls made a point to of her giving tokens for behavior that shouldn’t be rewarded because it should just be done or something along those lines. Those things just always stood out to me from that episode

Fanaticism collides with absence of responsibility or structure, combined with an unnatural intermediary.. Seems like a breeding ground for internal confusion and conflict. The suppression of open communication due to a oppressive environment. Results in depression from feeling powerless, leading to rage once the combustion grew...An explosion or release of this magnitude seems highly possible.

It's really sad that this happened. Looking at his face, I see a lot of the things I feel when I am in a mental health downward spiral. Thing is, I have a support system and the ability to control my own life. I don't feel like he did. I can see that from his escape attempts from the facility (I imagine the structure and rules brought him right back). Not to say this excuses the loss of life. He was responsible for that, but he also needed help. I hope I make sense. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this, and it makes it all hard to put into words

This case is quite interesting…: It seems in recent years incidence of young adults murdering seems to be on the rise. As I see it more and more I have to consider this more of a societal failure. I asked myself how are we failing them? I theorize that this is what’s wrong with participation trophies… they are always winners. They never learn to lose or how to cope with loss or anger and then they get out in the real world and their high school sweetheart breaks up with them and they can’t cope. Now I add that to my life experiences. My kids’ dad and I were pretty old fashioned parents. We were a bit more strict than some parents we knew…(like leaving the store when your child has a temper tantrum). I spent a lot of time deflecting any possible negativity so I didn’t affect my kids. When their dad passed away it was a horrible sick feeling. I couldn’t keep them from this pain it’s impossible and that really bothered me until suddenly I realized I had been doing it wrong I wasn’t supposed to be just protecting them from these things, I should have been teaching them how to cope with things we can’t control. Luckily i think I caught on just in time to help my kids with that: So now we have this very devout Christian family who simplify essentially eliminated temptations and outside influences so we feel like living a good and basic Christian life that these are some of the least likely things to have this happen to them but it did. In my mind it just goes to show that it doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have or what you believe this happens when we lack coping skills to deal with anger and loss.

I remember seeing this episode the first night it aired. This episode stood out because I knew something terrible was coming.

Those boys are in the category of abuse. CPS hopefully seen this video that proves the abuse. Save the children.

She removed the ability for them to form their identies, experience rights and responsibilities, form bonds with other kids etc. These are most important during teenage years where you learn through experience. The program wasn't the cause, it showed this young man what life is supposed to be. He felt trapped, lonely and miserable causing bouts of major depression and the only way he could find freedom was to remove part of his family and himself. Some people here say "well he's an adult he knew what he was doing", WRONG. Also wanting to end his own life showed he was also suffering with pain. This is the cause and effect of stripping away what every person should have growing up but didn't.

I am not justifying his actions but being this strict is never ok. Yes protect them, be there for them. Lead and guide them , but don’t do it to the point they can’t have no sense of self . These are children . Parents like this don’t realize these are growing people will eventually be adults who have to function in society . Besides you’re only young once , let them have their youth .

I just feel sorry for the young lads , never control yor kids to this degree . No wonder it turned sour. And as for the parents telling the boys that if they don't do their chores that they would " burn in hell" 😞 wtf??? Too strict,, too busy,,too sheltered,, they have no thoughts of their own. They have been severely brainwashed. The mother looks as if she may have suffered from depression and likley a religious fanatic. X

Of course they forgive him, they knew the abuse from their mother wasnt going to stop n the husband should be held to some accountability he allowed this mental abuse, physical forced labor, etc. Absolutely ridiculous to charge him that much time!! Hes lucky to be alive, him shooting himself is punishment enuff!!

I know it’s not good to speak poorly of the dead, however, I can’t spare any sympathy for the mom and the monster that she was. She (Kathy) clearly did not know how to be a proper parent, and thus thought by manipulating her children, and keeping them on a tight leash, that it would somehow have them grow up to be the “good Christian men.” I don’t feel bad for Kathy whatsoever. My heart instead goes out to the sons she left behind (I don’t even feel bad for the husband). I hope Jacob learns to forgive himself… if only to help him realize the horrible crime he committed.

Can you imagine if one of their kids said they were gay? I wonder what torture emotionally and physically she would have come up with. Horrible parents. Extremes of any kind are dangerous to a person’s mental health and ability to function.

CONTROL ISSUES Horrendous to live through this. This is an exception where I really do think the teen was suffering from mental issues heavily. As well as everyone else!! He just snapped bc of it…. Imagine being mentally ill because of abuse and having to interact with mentally ill family. With no escape! It’s like your soul is hostage. It’s torment even if it doesn’t appear that horrendous outside.

Jacob probably has more freedom in prison than he ever did at home.

After wife swap, the world he knew tht his parents raised was far more different then the way the other parents raised their children made him feel tht he committed a sin and they betrayed the beliefs they were raised in..

I like the part where you mention that there are advantages to both parenting styles. Psychologist call them permissive and authoritarian parenting styles, and there are obvious benefits from each. There are also severe drawbacks to each. If you are a permissive parent, you need to focus a lot on activating and motivating rather than just letting them do what they want. If you are an authoritarian parent, you need to carve out areas of autonomy and Independence and give your child choices and allow them to direct their activities. Both parenting styles have drawbacks, but why is parents can adjust to address the drawback.

Umm its not wife swap fault...zz.. the parents literally signed up. Why would the show put you with a family thats just like yours. So of course it will be a total opposite family. Problem is there is a such thing as being strict. These parents put these kids in a prison and used religion to scare them.

I have that and some other things.what exactly did she do that day for Jacob to just walk into the bathroom to end his mother's life? I honestly think that James must have run in hearing the shots trying to rustle the gun out of Jacobs hands at that moment Jacob probably didn't care and shot like a zombie then must have come back to reality seeing his brother what he'd done couldn't handle it so attempted to end his life? How powerful was the gun? What angle did he hit? His surgeries aren't too bad looking now, I think his right side was hit.are both eyes real or one fake? Will he be traumatized for the rest of his life if he hears music or reading the bible will it trigger that night? What was his state of mind throughout his trial? Most reality tv shows do not give any serious consideration to the long term consequences these programs have their participants. But then there’s the participants who also have the responsibility to recognize the consequences of putting their lives or the lives the production companies want to put out there. Money is always the end game. For the production company AND their participants. What are they willing to sacrifice for it? Be safe out there.

The mother did she have sex to create 4 sons or did the stalks drop them off so sad Jacob should be a free man now 😢 if there was a petition for that id be first to sign absolutely get him angry with his wife but we will never know why his young brother maybe didn't want that lifestyle for himself and brother anymore maybe the parents couldn't cope with losing their 2 older sons and became very obsessive with last 2 sons treating them even worse when they had 4 sons

Oh yes, just blame it all on the tv-production company that THEY were responsible for it all 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️Heck no!, i bet that no matter if they had been attending in ‘wife swap’ or not, this would’ve happened anyway, those kids were living a life worse than being in a prison or a monastery and that caused a huge frustration and anger to build up and it ended in the worst way 😣🫣 I’m glad that the rest of his family have forgiven him, they probably could see how bad things were too 😢

Being Christians & the killer being family, its natural they'd forgive gim. Its not easy & can be quite a struggle. I had to forgive the man who murdered my friend's child. Then, i had to forgive my niece's killer. If you harbor hatred & anger, it festers like an infected wound. God cannot forgive us of our transgressions if we cant forgive each other. This is showcased on your channel because like your channel name says it is “freaky”. In cases where someone takes the life of a family member we can not comprehend. Peoples privacy and anonymity should still be respected. You can not predict or prevent this from happening if you are an outsider. This is a sad and unfortunate story.
