Humans are so stupid, don't care what they destroy, as long as they are not the one paying the price, it will by our children's children who pay the price. @uiteoi
@uiteoi 4 года назад
Nice but still way too expensive at $667 per kWh. That compares to about $150 per kWh for the battery in an electric car, 4 times less per kWh. Over 4000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge translates into $0.21 per stored kWh for storage alone, to which you need to add the cost of electricity including cycle losses. These prices need to drop very significantly to increase adoption.

Such a common misconception, the car batteries last less than half as many cycles and don't have the same type of error forgiving chemistry of Lifepo4. Lifepo4 can be had for under half that $600 per kWh, but often times with less quality control. If you're expert enough to monitor them such quality control isn't as crucial but 99% of people lack such an aptitude.

Just for the sake of knowledge. What is considered a cycle with this battery. Let's say I have it at 100 percent charge, i drain it to 80 percent, then charge it back up to 100 percent. Does this count as one charge cycle or 0.2 cycles? How does the LiIon work in this instance? I ask this because of days when it is windy / cloudy out and you are going from charge / discharge / charge many times a day is that destroying your battery? Thank you
@jerrym2321
@jerrym2321 4 года назад
One cycle is full charge, down to 80% DOD (20% remaining) and back to full charge. The useful life will be negatively affected by discharging beyond 80%, but LFP batteries are very tolerant of living in a partial discharge state (unlike lead based batteries (FLA, AGM, Or GEL).

can these operate safely if mounted horizontally? or do they have to be standing upright?
@dufung3980
@dufung3980 Год назад
I can't answer that question but it's a good one, most LiFePO4 prefer upright but don't demand it, it's just to keep internal pressures and expansion off the lead ports. If I were to guess correctly and I bat a good percentage, I'd say laying down if not pushed to their whole 7kw at once would be safe. Thermal expansion usually happens when they are charged or discharged quickly especially while outside their temperature range. If you did .5C, 3750 watts output I'd say anything but directly upside-down would make it through the 4,000 cycles. And my name isn't du fung it's Brent. It's a joke between me and friends.

Also, since I'm a little old lady living alone, I can't even think about moving such large and heavy batteries around. So - can I take a long heavy cord of appropriate weight and run it out a window or wall opening to an inverter and solar panels outside? Around 6-8 years ago I bought a solar power pack system b4 I even knew anything about pure sine wave inverters. Never needed to use it, thank God; but about a year ago I just gave away those awg batteries but kept the inverter just in case, and of course I still have 400 watts of solar panels. They're not the fastest on the market by any means these days, but they will do the job for a patient person. I can't afford to run out and buy new panels, and I don't want to buy yet another mobile power station either.

@AltEStore
@AltEStore 3 года назад
Living off-grid generally requires changes to lifestyle. Anything that makes heat or cold uses a lot of energy. So you need to look at heating and cooking alternatives instead of electricity, and get the most energy efficient fridge possible. Paying more to get an expensive fridge can save you money by needing a smaller solar system to power it. Same with determining if you need air conditioning. You must take a look at all of your electric needs, create a loads list to determine how much energy you need, and then it can be determined how big of a system you need. Simply taking a traditional American household off-grid without dramatic changes can be extremely expensive.

can the batteries be replaced or upgraded in the box? how many solar pannels can you use with it? how much?
@dufung3980
@dufung3980 Год назад
The box I assume is full, so far as panels that depends on how fast you need to recharge it. To charge it once to full a day, 3kW of solar would probly manage that on most the planet even with just a couple hours of Sun a day. In Arizona where they get 5hours a day, 1.2kwh could manage it.. and the last "How much?" maybe you mean the cost, if you know how to get nice used panels made less than 10 years ago, 3kw can cost like $960 ;P but you have to know your shit a bit as I do. I bought 3.3kwh for 960 exactly thats including tax and the panels were 8 years old into their 25 year warranty over 80% original output.

We are planning on going hybrid with our solar and inverter. I plan on using my batteries in the evening to run our loads. I will have a power box with over 14kWh of Nissan Leaf Modules. We will be running our well and our central heat and air. Our home is all electric and has been since it was built. Even though it may take a large pack to run our home we still don't run over 12kWh per day even in the summer and our air is on nearly all the time in the summer and heat in the winter. If I went wood or gas I would be unable to use solar and have to pay someone else which is not our goal. We intend to cover all our needs in house. During off grid time I will be using my 15kW full low frequency sine wave inverter so we won't have trouble starting all the induction loads. My prototype wall will be 48volts and 150ah as well but only 6" deep and just about the same weight. I do like your monitoring setup and web/phone interface. This battery will probably last years and years, so hopefully by the time you do need to recycle it, there may be better programs in place to do that. Also, check with your local town. Many municipalities have free Hazmat recycle centers where you can bring in old batteries, old paint, oil,etc to drop off free of charge.

If you use the full 80% each day then it is 11 years till 20% of the battery capacity is gone. Much longer if on some days you only use 30% Someone will use the remaining 80% capacity for another 10 years. Will you still be alive in 20 years?

@AltEStore
@AltEStore 4 года назад
Sort of. The battery bank in your car is probably 10x bigger than this battery. So you could give a bit of a charge to get to another charging station, but you are not going to fully charge it from 0. Also, the charge rate would be limited to the rating of your inverter, or 30A at 240V, whichever is smaller.

@@zwiftfrance two Powerwalls has 27kWh. I don't know how big your car battery bank is, but if it is bigger than that, it'll put whatever it can in. All of this is assuming you are charging at night off the battery alone. If you are charging during the day, it can use solar power, or at night can use what is stored, and use the grid for additional power. The HAB can also be configured to do that, depending on what inverter you use.

People complain about the Tesla Powerwall 2, but nobody is even trying to beat them on price. This product $4995/7.5kWh = $666/kWh vs $6700 / 13.5kWh = $497/kWh and that includes a 5kW bidirectional inverter. You would think that a company like LG (that manufactures batteries) would have a product price competitive to Tesla, but not so much. Hopefully one of the other battery manufacturers will step up and try to compete with the Tesla product.
@vensonata
@vensonata 4 года назад
The only problem with the Powerwall 2 is that you can not charge it with a generator...so not suitable for off grid. And secondly, you need to charge only with AC. So your PV array needs another inverter first before being changed back to DC in the Powerwall, then back to AC. So add the cost of another inverter to the system.
@justfly2525
@justfly2525 4 года назад
@@vensonata Excellent points... Also Tesla won't let you install anything yourself so that really adds cost for a diy guy. Plus - LG is down to $600 per kw now so after all of the things mentioned in this thread LG beats the HAB and Tesla. The beauty is it doesn't need thermal management. The safer LiFePO4 technology eliminates fire concerns. Powerwalls currently can only be installed by certified installers, if they can get one. It gives no option for type of inverter. This allows people to use whatever 48V inverter they want, and they can install it themselves. So the overall installed system price is likely much lower than hiring someone to install a Powerwall.

A 100AH Battleborn will deliver just what it says: 100AH (1.2KWH) for 5000 cycles. Same chemistry. So why is this unit sold as 7.5KW when you are told actually only use 80% of that, and for only 4000 cycles besides. This is the same pracice that most of the "solar backup" systems and many inverters use; you really don't get what their labels tell you. This is the type of false labelling that harms the industry. If we are only supposed to draw 6KW on a regular basis, then label it as a 6KW unit.
@AltEStore
@AltEStore 4 года назад
All batteries are listed as their total capacity, not usable energy. 100Ah Lead acid batteries can occasionally be discharged to 50Ah, but for better life, shouldn't be used regularly below 70Ah. Likewise, the HAB can be discharge to 100%, but for better life, 80% is recommended. This is true with most lithium batteries. Battleborns are actually rated for 3000 cycles at 100% DoD, 5000 at 80%. The HAB is advertised as 7.5kWh, but actually has a little wiggle room of 7.68kWh.
@BS-sz1dv
@BS-sz1dv 4 года назад
@@AltEStore I stand corrected on the Battleborn cycle life at 100% discharge, thank you. My point still remains that in my opinion hardware should be labeled per it's practical usage, not so that we need to read the fine print to size a system.
@justfly2525
@justfly2525 4 года назад
Good point BS1960... But as long as you're comparing lithium to lithium then most all recommend the 80% cut off. So you can still quickly get apples to apples. The LFP-15 can be found with a better warrantied cycle life and at a better price. And LG Chem is even better than it. But do you need all those cycles? Or are years more important? 10 years at one cycle per day is 3650 cycles. I argue that years are more important (depending on application). Price per KW HAB - $667 LFP - $618 LG Chem - $600 Price per 80% rated KW HAB - $833 LFP - $773 LG Chem - $750 Price per warrantied cycle HAB - .2083 cents per cycle LFP - .1289 cents per cycle! LG Chem - Confusing but .0268 cents (at least 60% of life at 10 years w/28,000 cycles or less) HAB - 7.5 year warranty LFP - 10 year warranty LG Chem - 10 years LG Chem is the winner here. Now you have to ask yourself which company you think is still going to be in business in 7.5 to 10 years??? A big company like LG Chem which has better numbers in the first place is the logical answer in my opinion. However, there are lower price per kw out there if you're going to gamble on a small company. I've found numbers as low as $380 (new) per kw and $225 (recycled) per kw. I'm not sure if there's a correct answer here. I personally am going to go with the $225 per kw and gamble away. They only have to last me 3 years and At that point I've paid the same per kw rate as a battery that offers a 10 year warranty up to that 3 year mark. After 3 years I'm saving money. I have reason to believe that battery will last a lot longer than 3 years. Plus... If it does die at the 3 year mark then I'm back in the battery market after prices have fallen for 3 years. I hope this info helps a little. IMO batteries are the most critical decision to make on your system right now. Especially an off grid system like I'm putting together right now. Maybe ALT E Store will start carrying LG Chem for us? I like their store, educational material, and attitude.
