Prior to US entry into Korea, Korea was united under the People’s Republic of Korea a Progressive Socialist Democracy that was completely functional and widely supported. This is not to mention the PRK had the most progressive women rights laws. Then the US came in, split the country and the Soviets came in as a response later pushing the PRK to become Juche and reforming it into the modern day DPRK (North Korea).
