To those doubting their own art- this man was on instagram and said he felt intimidated by a lot of other sometimes younger posters, that their art actually made him feel a bit down on his own. THIS GUY IS A GOD DAMN MASTER AND HE FEELS THAT WAY. So don't let that stop you.
I mean art is subjective, and some do think their art is "bad" than others. This type of things is what kept the industry running. I don't agree with his political views about art that much but his skills is why I have high regards of him.
I know that I play the comparison game too much, and that’s what keeps my focus on the end result. I get intimidated by the artists that I look up to, but they’ve probably done the same. So, I just need to gain more experience and keep my faith. :)
Glad Proko summed up the most important point. Everyone desires a built-in excuse to not reach their potential... some magic power that they don't have any control over. The fact is, he simply draws more than everyone. Anyone reading this could become a master artist, but they make the decision every day not to live up to that potential. Even being hyper-observational is a side-effect of drawing constantly. Go draw something you random youtube comment reader!
Thanks for the homework! Here's one for you: Look up the term obsession. That dogmatic cadence in both the video and your comment is really disturbing to the otherwise great content. Yeah he draws a lot, we get it.
No need to feel attacked. No one is saying your life has more or less value if you become a master artist. The fact is, lots of people want to know what it takes... and the answer is, it does take obsession. It's up to you if that's good or bad. Obviously, I see the positive in it.
a chess grandmaster sees the way the pieces are laid on the board and immediately draw from memory of what should come next. They've seen almost literally every combination that nothing almost surprises them. Think about building a vocabulary and then using them in your daily conversations. It's like that for these masters...ofc with vocabulary some people might just invent words like hice (a made up plural for "house" because "mice" is a plural for "mouse") and it might catch people off and disorient them a little.
@kamenpower simple: to make themselfs feel better about their own inability to do something. they are lazy and not willing to admit that it took years of work and dedication. something that they can't explain to themselfs, because they never experienced anything like it. so it must be something else, like talent, right?
Whenever I loss motivation or think ''dang, how I was supposed to get better?'' I always look either this video or some Kim Jung Gi's archived livestream. He was the reason I started, and his passing was the reason I almost stopped drawing. I don't think I will ever see an artist like him on my lifetime. I don't think there has ever been someone like him, or will ever be. But I'm grateful that I lived on a time when we could all watch him draw.

Actually, the Japanese fandom for Kim came to be when Murata started praising him on twitter in March 26, 2012. Murata: "I've just seen the absolute last word on inking. So there are so many geniuses in the world whom I've not seen yet... *I've decided, I must become as good as him by the time I become 40 years old!"* Japanese fans started buying Kim's illustration books after that.
Like he just said, no secret in learning how to draw: 1 - Draw every single hour, every single minute, every single second. Find excuses to draw more instead of finding excuses to do useless stuff; 2 - Learn the fundamentals, they will help you to improve in every aspect of your art; 3 - Draw the things that you like and things you don't like. Both are important; 4 - No more ideas? Back to studies. Also draw what is in front of you, as long as you're drawing, you're progressing and improving other drawing skills. There ya go. It won't work only for drawing but for other things like cooking, maths, etc. The more you the better you get. Good luck guys👍👍👍👍
@@erroryaw216 tbh you cant call a drawing bad. Every drawing has some meaning. I have seen many drawings which dont even have proper lines but it looks attractive and very creative. Every drawing is good it just depends on the person viewing it. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I first discovered kim jung gi in my early college days and the way he drew blew my mind. What he could do without any erasing, construction lines etc, is absolutely incredible. I actually got to meet him when he visited my college a couple years later which is a memory I will cherish forever. I personally believe that Kim Jung Gi was the greatist modern living artist by far, no one can do what he could do. And not just from his pure drawing skills but in the way that he has inspired all of us. I could not believe what I was reading when I found out that he passed today, he was a hero for all of us who are studying art. Rest in peace to the king, the absolute legend and a spiritual teacher to us all
This guy is soooo like me. I say what I think, dislike political correctness and if I truly want something, be it skill or an object, I'll go to hell and back to get it. I'll be an artist, for now I'm a novice, but I draw for hours every day. I'll get there.
I believe that any talent or skill is either taught or self taught, and there is no innate skill because nobody is born with with skills, but what happens is people have affinities and develop interests which lead to them being spending a lot of time studying the subjects, like how Kim Jung Gi studies and observes his environment even when he's not drawing. I know I'm being pedantic
Michael K I disagree but respect your opinion. I have seen kids with raw talent produce images that an adult wouldn’t be able to compose I think it’s definitely a mix of both i am 35 and still learning so much

To count on the age is just an excuse for other excuses who older people do if they recognize that a far younger one is capable of things they can't. Second famos excuse is "things went otherwise in 'my' case" or "I cannot spend that amount of time for that b/c I've other things to do..." although they might be infact true it also just projects to an aspect which is called talent. Just to start early (whether it is interest or by force (look on Chinas kids how they get drilled to skill and raising up to the TOP). You can't sell me they have a glass ball which is capable to recognize that a 3 year old is talented in piano, art or music. Just drill and they comes to skill. Look at those 6 year old who play Mozart on the piano at supreme quality. Many piano teachers ain't capable of - by your explaination it has to be talent but it isn't obviously!

He is hunting for his secret, but he told him his secret right at the beginning.....but no one wants to hear that. Just like every other master at anything.....he did it more than everyone else. No secret. Just passion and hard work.
Haha I'm grateful that you totally understand. Practice. Then if you're not satisfied then keep practicing til you are. It's so annoying how the impatient think there's a secret. They say I can only draw stick figures. I used to as well but then I kept going and leveled up. Kim is on a freakish level but it's achievable if it's your life's mission. Love art.
I don't think that's quite accurate. That's not his secret. Admittedly it is the bread and butter, and many people want to ignore that, and look for what we might call a secret but what they really want is a *shortcut*. Another thing to consider though is that self-knowledge is rarely, if ever, complete. That is, the idea that we are all rational thinking machine the fully understand why we do what we do isn't necessarily true. In fact, I levels of self-knowledge aren't even necessarily correlated with great skill and talent I think they can be, but they might not be. In other words, this guy could be a supremely talented artist and not really know why he is. Of course he understands the technical aspects of how to draw, and can explain his technique and so on, but the Deep almost metaphysical roots of his talent may very well be something that eludes him, it may be just as much a secret to him as it is to us.
Practice really is the secret. There are so many people who quit drawing for years after the first drawing because it looks bad. But it looks bad because they dont have skill. They dont have skill because they dont practice. They wasted years doing nothing when they could have practiced
I dont think ink is a must, even with pencil you can F up big time if you r using right paper :D. But i agree using traditional method to learn drawing is the best way. Many r going straight for digital art with all kind of tools to bypass the skill, so that they will get result much faster, yet wont be able to make a solid art on paper.

The part of his brain that allowed him to draw in 3D since kindergarten is also the part that makes him unable to stop drawing for too long. For him, not drawing is harder than drawing. He probably draws in his sleep.

For the negative people: *It's not a photographic memory.* It's a large visual library from practice of anatomy, like a doctor. Use models to do this quickly. I can almost do this with two years of practice. I don't have great visual memory compared to most people. It's s skill not a "gift". Edit: Sinix already said it. lol.
@@skat0rzZzz lol Alright, you. I stressed this because people will often use biology as a cop out. I only use biological arguments when it's impossible to explain something otherwise. I am not great with memory, but I have been building a visual library over time and can do something similar in a small scale when I couldn't before. I imagine that with more practice I will achieve something similar based on this trajectory.

I think my favorite part of the video was when he said he was in the military and could not draw because of how intense it was. Instead, he drew in his mind visualizing the structures around him and touching and feeling things. He just couldn't turn it off.
but you gotta also take care of your body. it's weird i just saw a video in which the man says ya gotta balance it out so that you don't trouble yourself with physical problems then i see this lel but i'm sure kim jung gi takes care of himself as well well with all that traveling it's already quite the exercise.

That was great answer, people ask me a portrait of they family or they baby all the time, but I don’t enjoy doing portrait of others, I have more important people to draw, and I don’t find the time, I don’t think people understand, how much time and energy goes in it.

For those who want to watch it 09:20 Someone who draws in their mind is already obsessed and has already partake in "visualisation" (referring to those Law of attraction philosophy).
If you draw something a lot, you begin to be able to replicate it and the techniques from memory, because when you first drew it you studied it a lot. So I don't think its as much of a photographic memory as much as just an insane amount dedication and time hes put into his craft. Honestly he probably doesn't like the notion of him having a photographic memory, it makes it sound like he was born with this talent, when it really came from hard work and passion.

Talent is real. It doesn't mean you don't need to work hard. Talent means you will progress faster and more than others because you have a better understanding and intuition of a subject than the average person. Fact is that most people who learn to draw, even those who keep going for decades and decades, will never be as good as Kim Jung Gi. Just like most who learn to play piano and keeps playing for years will never be a Mozart.
Pope Suavecito XII yeah talent is real I agree with you, I never had a talent for art or a passion I just drew a lot more because it would keep me busy, there are a lot of people who are better than me at drawing, but I just draw so I can say I do want to pursue in something. My real talent comes from games but I don’t play them, I only do to sell my accounts to make profit off of it.
@@popesuavecitoxii2379 Talent is just the innate ability to understand time and space, faster. I have this. If I focus and am interested, I learn faster than anyone I've met. If I am not interested though... I am the worst at it and it depresses me to think about let alone do. I can't hold down a "normal" job but can make a living doing what I want, when I want and how I want. Not many have this ability. I should draw more though.
after having received the news today i am so heartbroken. this guy inspired and influenced me so much. I dropped out of school to do art because of him and it was the best decision ive ever made. He is a legend and will be remembered
@Richard WAGNER he uses all kinds of materials. he doesn't just use one pen. He uses the brush pen mostly for his big drawings. but when drawing in his sketchbook, he uses a lot of different stuff. Oh and materials don't actually matter to be good at drawing
I will be like him. I'll practice, practice, practice and practice and be a legend and the world will see me. I've been practicing daily for almost a year now, and recently I doubled my daily amount of practice. 10 years, 20 years, I'll get there. To the sketchbook!
every few weeks I come back to this video and get so emotional, I've lived and breathed drawing since I was little and this man is my biggest inspiration. To know his hand will never bless paper again makes me so sad. REST IN PARADISE
It was an amazing experience to see him perform when he came to my university. I felt inspired and I was in awe when he showed us his sketchbook filled to the brim with so many things, both imagined and in-the-scene drawings. He usually draws his paper and pen or brush in the foreground to show he was there in person. I remember the presentation classroom filled with so many art students and other students from other majors just to watch him. He showed us how he approached perspective, points of view and though it was late and I remember feeling a bit sleepy, I did not want to miss anything. The next day, he visited my illustration class and it was so amazing that we could all draw on the same paper as him. It was so fun working on the banner with him, I will never forget it! Love his work!

A friend in art school introduced me to Kim Jung Gi. I was surprised when I saw on his Instagram, videos of book signings where he'd make a complete drawing instead of just a signature. I've been a fan ever since. This video just motivated me, I'm in a moment in my life where I really needed something like this. Thank you Proko!!!
@@runneypo no newclouds right if he was "talented" then he wouldn't have been practiving since he was three years old theres no secret pill or innate skill he used or had he practiced a ton since he was a young child and got to where he was people want to believe its "talent" because saying you worked since you were three doesnt fit with them saying "i suck because im not talented"
@@cole7638 What i mean by "no its actually both" is that it's obvious that he has put a ton of work into it, that much is obvious but there are people who have also put in as much work into drawing and don't even come close to his level. Having talent doesn't mean that someone will instantly be a good artist but someone with no talent wont be able to just grind themselves into being the next kim jung gi. In practice though it's best to forget about talent vs hard work because it can be very damaging to starting artists by either discouraging them or inflating their ego to where they just dont work at all.
Love Kim Jung Gi! I have seen as many Kim Jung Gi documentaries as I could, even ones in other languages that I dont speak, and this is the best one by far. Thx Proko for the thoughtful questions, your humor, and the genuine wonder you transmitted all throughout this video.

@@zebimicio5204 I believe it doesn't. of course, your pen drawing will be different from your paintings, but i believe what makes a difference is your knowledge and domain over the fundamentals. Kim is godlike with his nankim drawings, and this is because of his practice, and i think he would make marvelous paintings with whatever medium he chooses, because he knows the fundamentals by heart
@@filipevasconcelos4409 I know. What I'm implied in my earlier post is that people are too worrid about brush types when they are trying to draw. In reality you don't need any specific brush to draw lines. The only time different brush types really matter is when they are colouring the character they drew.

September 25th in Łódź on Comic Festival had opportunity to met him, took a picture, bought his artbook, hug him, say to him that he is inspiration for me. Now I feel heartbroken and incredibly lucky simultaneously. He was THE ARTIST. Rest in peace Master. You will be in my memory forever 😢

I can totally relate , he said he still considers drawing fun. It's like breathing , I get that because I also spent alot of my childhood drawing and it was like second nature. We can eyeball perspective and be almost spot on , we observe our world closely and we are fasinated and curious about the details of our surroundings. For me he represents the best of us who feeds his love for this art , and with his dedication to the art of drawing He became a master of the craft. This is great and I wish him all the best .
This is the first time I heard about Kim Jung Gi... and after seeing this video I got so inspired by him I decided to pursue art, I'm davasted to hear my fav artist of all times passed away, R.I.P master
