Perhaps the crowned jewel of Women's Tennis in Hawaii: The Kailua Women's Night Doubles! Similar to the annual Men's Night Doubles hosted at KRC, the Women's Night Doubles attracts the top female tennis players in the state of Hawaii & even some from other states &/or countries at times. A variety of top juniors as well as current collegiate players all enter for a chance & being named the top women's doubles team of the year. Something about playing under the lights when the fuzzy yellow ball zooms back & forth makes for an extra special tennis tournament!
2013's edition of WND had many outstanding matches throughout its entirety. However, one of the more memorable matches I can remember was actually not for the championship, but for 3rd place! Back then, young juniors Katie Kim & Alyssa Tobita were working their way up the food chain in the tennis world, making it all the way to the semi finals where they fell in three dramatic sets to then University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahines Martina Kostalova & Sarah Gealer. On the other side of the net stood another top Hawaii junior, Kahala Companion, as well as former UH player & recent graduate, Katarina Poljakova. Being that this match was only for 3rd place (consolation style), both teams would play out an 8-game pro set. However, this pro set would go the distance & all the players gave it everything they had to win the match. Also, seeing three out of four of these players being only juniors, the future looked very bright for Hawaii Tennis!
