I know this clip is kinda bad audio wise, but
listen to the feel, the commanding phrasing,
the complete mastery & heart of Kim singing
& playing the 3rd position chromatic blues that
he doesnt get enough credit for. He's known for
his great singing, ( RIGHTFULLY so) his complete
"Top of the Heap" diatonic harp playing, but I don't
think he gets enough credit fo rbeing a truley Great
blues chromatic player.
So I submit this clip as THE very Best clip of
a 3rd position chromatic blues performance...
bar None out here on RU-vid. That's my
opinion anyway. I'd Luv ya to prove me wrong.
This clip is from 1998, the audience is ALL
harmonica players at aharmonica convention!
The band is former members of Big Dave &
The Ultrasonics from Michigan.

Nick Moss is on Guitar, instead of the Utrasonics
Dave Steele. Ben Wilson is on the keyboards.
(he's with Blues Traveller now) Piet Struyk is on
drums & Jim Rasmussen is on the bass guitar.
(Honorary mention of my pal, Dave Morris,
the harp player from the now defunct Ultrasonics.
They were a great band to behold, and a great
bunch of talented cats to hang out with!)
For you gearheads, Kim is playing through a
Victoria 4x10 45 watt amp. His mic here is a
Turner Challenger Series BD bullet mic that
was provided for him on this gig by Dennis G.
If you know of any other GREAT chromatic blues
in 3rd that come close to this awesome performance
please let me know. ENJOY!!!
~Donnie~

Kim has been one of the few who once he started into the music of the founding fathers stuck with it and over the years he has developed his side of the story when most touch on it and go on, He's the real deal. "KEEP ON HARPIN" Joey "B" ALAMO HOOT

I've always loved his little rap at the intro. "I hesitate to bring this out amongst you people, so don't hold it against me." (He's at a harmonica convention...lol) Then he says "D minor...of course..." classic.

I've seen Kim play chromatic a few times around the Tigerman album way back, and I think he's a master 1, 2 and 3 position and Chromatic. I have used to play last call for alcohol (T.birds) live for years with my band.

as with most great chromatic blues players playing in 3rd position, the slide is used very sparingly, and usually as a passing note for the flat 3. Kim's a a monster at utilizing this minimality (is that actually a real word?) If this is Over the Top..then Give Me More !!! Cause I Like It!!!!

@madogblue he doesnt play it nearly as much as the shorties, but when he does, he OWNS it! I'm sorta pleased that he kept his deep and oh so soulful chromatic prowless on a low profile in his early years. A true diamond in the rough. His LP debut from 79 with the T-birds on the cut "Pocket Rocket" showed what a tough chromatic 3rd position blues belter he really was...back then.

It's great. I like it almost as much as when Little Walter played the exact same licks (by his own invention) more than fifty years ago.

Norman Lee Morris little Walter never used 5 hole (he used 4 hole splits) octaves or the slide on any of his recordings. Wilson is using both here.

@JustAintthatWay that's be me who loaded it up, sounds like a gun or something...haahaa. As for Kim's comment, most blues chromatic players are limited to playing the instrument in 3rd position, which is a whole step below the root key. Also known as dorian mode. 3RD position harp, weather its a chromatic or a diatonic harp, is just great for playing minor blues, so I think thats why he says Dm, of course. He's playing a C chromatic over the key of D minor, of course...lol. PEACE

@mscomb you can find it on cd on Ebay. I picked one up for about 11. on a Buy It Now.
@BluesGeek

Its a convention of harp players... so he brought his A game. Over The Top? He's using the slide very sparingly...and only in the approriate natural places for a minor blues. Hell, he's only using it for the flatted 3rd. There's tons of other cats who employ the slide frequently. Then there's the cats who actually, for real, no kidding, play chromatically.................................what a concept. I wish I'd come up with it ;))
@BluesGeek
@BluesGeek 12 лет назад
if it's a C harp (diatonic or chromatic) and the bands in Dm, this is 3rd position. Not 2nd. And imho, its not the ONLY blues style that uses the chromatic harp, It's just the most common & intense. George Smith played in many positions on chromatic, but anyway, I want some of what yer smokin manggg!

@DanSolem I recently uploaded a Clarke clip that equals this as far as Great Chromatic Performance goes. They're both Exceptional clips and can't really be compared...except to say, they are both Amazing. So Kim's gonna have to share the esteemed title I gave his clip with Bill now...cause I found a killa dilla.

Hi Dimestore, The tune's in Dminor. The progression is Dm - Gm - Dm - Am - Gm - Dm. Hope that helps, friend. Eric

Nice takeoff of Mr Carey Bell. Did someone say Hendrix? Be careful. Hendrix was a pure innovator of a style that no one had done before. Kim is a very good player, singer and performer, but he's not anywhere near Jimi Hendrix. As for you people who are not familiar with the Chromatic as a "solo" instrument (like the sax, or trumpet) you should listen to Toots Thielemans. He is the innovator of true Jazz Chromatic Harmonica (and yes he plays blues as well of course).

Michael Williams-Wright Jimi wasn’t much of a singer according to himself. Kim sings his ass off. Jimi had energy and vibe but not really skilled singer. Guitar is another story all together...in another galaxy far far away.
