The kimbo is truly the best in minimalist engineering I've observed. The dual functionality of most elements along with undeterred maintenance make this camper the dream of those of us that one day strive to reduce our footprint without giving up the accoutrements of certain elements of modern living. My partner and I will have to wait until our offspring are older before endeavoring into this fantastic voyage. Until then all you young people keep the industry innovating!
Can’t wait to see what you two design next. Having owned a airstream 19 coach, I’m more impressed with the versatility of your truck camper build. I agree quality of thermo seal is so important. This slide in camper is nice too. Light weight but seem quality and to have durable construction. Thanks for sharing..
LOVE the construction. Radii(built my own rad bender) and rigidity bends(and brake for 1/8in aluminum) are how I did my 2 snowmobile trailers (no frame walls). I did, however 100% weld all my seems (knock on wood-2yrs in and no cracks have shown up) Looks like a great product, and givin me ideas for the foam panel method I wanna do for my next build, Overland style rig. Thanks for the inside scoop guys!!
Really enjoying your channel. I'm a fabricator/designer so I really enjoy seeing what you two put together. This was a good look on how these Kimbos are built.
This is a great video...thanks for posting...I like seeing how people are getting the best out of their Kimbos...& how real people fit in. Much appreciation from New Zealand.
Looks pretty awesome . I love the simplicity and functionality of the Kimbo. I have an F350 but want a light weight camper that we can close the tailgate. Good job!
Kind of a surprise to see a Kimbo on your channel today. I happen to live in Bellingham Wa. where Kimbo's are made and a friend of mine actually works there building them. Small world!
Thank you for making this video. Kimbo seems to be a great truck camper, but of course the one you guys built is supreme. I am going to order a Kimbo today, just my concern with Kimbo is the fact that there is no were to put a mini stove. I am most likely going to order it without the kitchen, so I can make room for a longer table. My use for the Kimbo is for snowboarding only, and as you know, in the cold, you can't cook outside.
I'm planning to go with the mid-size truck route and have come to two conclusions, Scout or Kimbo...decisions, decisions. Thank you for the tour, though.
@Steve great stuff. I am also lening toward the Scout but now with the new Toyota Tundra coming out, I have a new dilemma...is it going to be the Yoho for the Tacoma or the Olympia for the new Tundra? Anyway, the wife and I will seat down and run things ovrr again to see what's best suited our needs before putting a down payment on one. All the best to you on your decision. Happy camping and stay safe.
I'm a full timer so my opinion is a bit different. I went with the kimbo. It isn't finished being built yet, bit I can't wait. I chose the kimbo because it is so modular. Being full time you need every inch of space to act as 3 inches of space. I have figured out how to get in a shower space, a composting toilet (cassette toilets are smelly), and storage for all my stuff. Kimbo truly gives a better canvas to create a space from. If I was going out on weekends, and week long trips, the scout would be a good option. I just couldn't go that way, and oddly a huge turn off for me on the scout was air circulation. After living in a regular size cargo van, you realize how important it is to keep out condensation. The scout has a dinky little fan that barely does anything. It would make for hot summer nights and wet walled winters.
I love your rig, but I think the kimbo in more feasible for me! I’ve loved those campers for a while now! Thanks for the tour... nice to see one on a big rig.
I think the Kimbo is a great solution for a lot of people! Especially people who aren't crazy and can't dedicate 3 months of their lives to building something 😂
Kimbo's are Quite UNIQUE!!! ....I call It the 'SPACE POD'!...Pro's & Con's to EVERY Truck Camper!! Look forward to Watching!! ...i bet it doesn't have an Emergency 'Pass through'..from Camper to Driver's CAB!! lol!...Cheers From Canada!!
I've never seen a Kimbo before, Very interesting design. Space Age looking. The Overlander I'm building on my channel will be more like a Cargo Box truck than a Space Age Moon Rover haha. Very cool over view of the their setup. It's cool to see what you can buy right out of the box so to speak. The benefit of yalls rig is yall built it to your exact needs. Great Video! I don't think my Texas But could survive in all that snow! haha
Yes they are very unique and it was so cool being able to see one in person! We can't wait to see how Erik & Christina customize it to their own needs. We're from California so the snow is still a bit of a novelty to us. We'll see how we feel after a few months of it! 😂
Hi guys glad to you enjoying your camper those Euro vision windows are one of the only brands that can fit to 50mm sandwich panel with an extra spacer you can order also I like the fact of double glazing CHEERS enjoy you holiday.
I like that its like a cocoon safe and warm when it snows. Ive been looking at wedge tent campers which are fun and light but do not keep you warm in the winter. i wonder how well the kimbo does in the summer?
Great review of the Kimbo. I appreciate that Courtney and Riley were genuinely sincere with their praise. ... Kimbos have been on my radar for quite sometime. There's a sense of elegance in their well-engineered, low maintenance, Spartan simplicity. ... As George Thorogood sang, he drinks alone and prefers to be by himself. For a solo camper/traveler/outdoorsman, a Kimbo is cozily spacious. ... But I'd imagine your own Club Med build camper is much more conducive to maintaining marital bliss while traveling.
There really isn't a one fits all solution when it comes to "who makes the best camper" but I do believe the Kimbo is an excellent solution for the weekend warrior who enjoys well designed simplicity!
Very different campers with very different intended uses! We were a bit envious of how simple the Kimbo was, because ours is definitely higher maintenance!
@@AmbitionStrikes I take trips anywhere from a few days to a month or so. I’ve been to New Orleans, Yosemite, death Valley, Yellowstone and the grand Tetons, Mount Baker, Grand Canyon and a few other places. I’d like to put a portal hole in the side without a window, like they do in the boats. I just like the idea of having windows on every side, so I can see what’s around me. I suggest it you get some bungee cords for your baskets or some other kind of covering, if you go off road you’re going to find the floor flooded with all kinds of stuff from the baskets. I also have made a board across the front of the bed, so that my stuff doesn’t slide off the bed onto the floor. I just use a clamp to fasten it where the shelves are. I like the idea of your tarp covering your solar panel and top of your roof.
@@AmbitionStrikes Don't you think the 4 jacks would get hung up going off road?........ the out side of the box is nice but lacks a lot on the inside and little function but that's me......................so in the back of your mines are you planing your next one?
1. Kimbo is on top of my list for a camper those guys do great work very smart. 2. Having this dude who is so stoked on it makes me much happier. 3. I like dodge 3500 better lol maybe not with the super duty upgrades for 2021!
I'm very curious to see some long term reviews of the new 7.3 gas Fords! We aren't brand loyal at all and have owned something from just about every manufacturer. I'm super happy with our Ram but Eric's Tremor is an awesome truck too!
The design of this camper is awesome. I think Kimbo should install a track system for the baskets so they can be moved around and removed when they aren't needed.
Awesome! Finally a Kimbo! I wanted one from the first time I saw one. Yeah the truck doesn't even know the Kimbo is on back. A Toyota Taco will easily haul it.
Great little camper. Would be nice to have one made for regular size pickups with generous payload. Also all the angles on the cabover front nose could be made smoother for better aerodynamic airflow and aesthetics similar to yours. But it may be difficult to achieve with the building technique they use.
When is this? Month/Year? Love windows that lift out so rain can't come in. I need a bigger power source. Small company with morals!!! Door is fascinating!
I'm considering a Kimbo for many of the reasons mentioned. I like the simplicity but where do they go to the bathroom? I don't see a spot for a cassette toilet in any of the literature.
Yes, the Kimbo rigs are functional, but as Erik said in the video, doing much more with it other than weekend warrior stuff, would leave you wannting something bigger.
yeah, but it's too small and doesn't have a bathroom! :-) Riley, you're a total geek... but in a good "man, I wish I knew what he knew!" way! Courtney, don't know how I missed it, but had no idea that you were anywhere near 6'2"!
How good is the kimbo’s insulation? It looks like a cool design and good use of materials. I bet she would have major closet envy if she saw the size of the closet in your camper
More important than R-value is the effective R-value. You need to take into consideration the amount of thermal bridging and in the Kimbo there is very minimal. The fireplace was easily able to keep us toasty warm while inside.
So much snow! At night during our trip it was in the low teens, except for one night where it hit -7! Erik & Christina said that the heater was easily able to keep up in the cold weather.
Those Kimbo's are super nice although you do pay for it. I don't like that the lift jacks stick out so much. looks like they may block rearward vision. I wonder if they can make them removable?
Yes the jacks are easily removable! After smacking a jack and damaging a Lance camper we owned we got in the habit of taking them off before any long trip. The cool thing about making them so wide is the ease of loading/unloading from the truck. We had a cabover for awhile with narrow jacks that meant you had to back up perfectly centered with less than an inch to spare.
thats pretty neat. i like the walls.. is that metal on the inside? im building a permanet kinda central vacume. these little campers get so dirty so fast.. especially with dogs! ive got a hoover that the tank and motor seperate where its just a cylinder to mount in a cabinet. and with enough hose to reach everything.. boom!, a central hidden vacume system.
I think the Earthroamer's have central vacuum... that is such a neat idea! With two dogs and Riley I definitely end up vacuuming out the camper a few times a day!
oh, like a velvet on the valls. so what are those windows?? wish i knew about them before i bought mine.. actually, maybe i dont wish i knew! know what i mean lol
@@benjones8977 what brand are those windows? Yea used broom for awhile but I’m in Colorado and the dust is bad. With the dust on everything, the dog hair and pine needles I just want to get it all up quickly. And my dog sheds a lot
Like the Kimbo but that new $80,000 F350 is overkill , I bought a used 2017 F250 diesel loaded crewcab longbed 4x4 with only 104,000 miles for only $35,000 ,can haul or tow most anything
It was rad being able to check out the new Tremor package in person! 35" tires, a lift, rear locker, upgraded shocks, and trail control as factory options (with a factory warranty) really means Ford is stepping up their game!
We have taken several showers outside this winter in ours and it has been great! Showering inside of a small camper really is a last resort option for most.
We received 8’ of snow in 2 days so Eric put the tarp on to shed snow (Riley spent the entire time shoveling our roof and we will definitely do the same next time).
Looking at that mega truck that costs who knows how much and that tiny camper that costs who knows how much, I am so glad I own a real house 😀. Living in that tiny thing and paying for that truck / camper (both depreciating like mad), would drive me crazy...
We are huge fans of truck campers because you can always take the camper out and have a normal truck. Much more practical than a dedicated RV. It’s all about work hard, play hard. We’re all gonna die someday so might as well go on epic adventures while you can.
Some overly simp couple buying something they truly don’t understand other than it was the “best that money could buy”, for travelers there sure isn’t much living equipment in there.
