This shared reading video takes place in a kindergarten classroom using the story, "I Went Walking." Shared Reading is a great time to bring the students to the carpet for a short amount of time (10 minutes) and have everyone's eyes on one text. Each day is focused on a specific reading foundational skill and reading literature standard. As I introduce the book, I want to emphasize how we are using the pictures FIRST by looking at the cover, back of the book, title, and even the title page to "get our brains ready" before we even start reading the book. We are doing inferential work by looking at the pictures and thinking which animals will come up next and how the little boy feels at the end when all the animals follow him. The text nicely lends itself for students to chime in because the structure of the book has great repetition. It's evident that this kindergarten class has structures and routines in place thanks to Mrs. Hackman who is an awesome kindergarten teacher! The students are highly engaged and are able to retell the story across their fingers.
