Kindergeld in Germany is a family allowance aimed at supporting parents with the costs of raising their children. It is paid by the Familienkasse until the child reaches the age of 18, with the possibility to extend it to the age of 25 in certain situations. There are some significant changes to the Kindergeld system in 2023, which also apply to Polish families living in Germany.
How to apply for Kindergeld?
Filling in form KG1 and delivering it to the local Familienkasse office.
Present the required documents, such as European marriage and birth certificates, a certificate of co-registration, a copy of your identity document, a certificate that you are not receiving social benefits in Poland and documents confirming your employment and income.
Until when can you receive Kindergeld?
You are entitled to the Kindergeld until your child reaches the age of 18, with the possibility of extending it until the age of 25 if:
the child is still studying,
is not in employment
their annual income does not exceed €8,000.
For children with disabilities, the allowance can be granted regardless of age.
In 2023, the Kindergeld is €250 per month for each child ( in 2022, the Kindergeld amount was respectively: 1st and 2nd child: € 219, 3rd child: € 225, € 250 for each additional child). According to the latest data, there will be no increase in Kindergeld in 2024.
The benefit is independent of the parents' income.
The changes introduced aim to unify the benefit rates and are part of the German anti-inflation law.
