Kindle’s Secret Weapon? The Future of "Real" Color E-Ink (Gallery 3)

E-Ink Gallery 3 is what I'd like to call real color E-Ink because, instead of using an RGB filter on top of a black-and-white ink screen, it uses colored E-Ink particles.
This is the holy grail for e-paper because it essentially works similarly to printing colors on a sheet of paper, resulting in a cleaner and more vibrant appearance than current color E-Ink technology.
With the 2022 announcement, E Ink named seven companies that would adopt this real color ink technology in 2023. But guess what? That didn't happen. So what's next?

Remarkable just announced the "Paper Pro", which has an E-Ink Gallery 3 screen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FXlO9MaaW8g.html So I'd say at this point it's not a question of if, but when Amazon releases the Kindle Color with Gallery 3. Let's see if Amazon wants to take advantage of this year's Christmas sales.

Thanks, Chalid. Really I was an owner of the Bigme Galy during a year, next I broke the screen. Just used for read, not the tablet purposes. I just bought Kaleido 3 Boox Go Color 7. Terrible ghosting even use full screen refresh in settings. Colors are pale, screen is extremely dark. The only annoying things is ghosting on static images, never fixed by boox still. The Bigme Galy have no one ghosting with full refresh, Kaleido 3 has.

Just give me some digital foto frames with gallery 3 already!! This technology is PERFECT for picture frames!! No more external power required as with all the stupid LCD frames. The little power it needs could easily be drawn from solar panels in the frame itself.

Hehe, it really would be great - I built a digital frame with a Pimeroni Impression panel (which is E-Ink ACeP) and a battery. Works really well, just very slow to refresh and not very high-res. I haven't managed to come around making a video about it, but it's still on the list.
@bellissimo4520
@bellissimo4520 День назад
@@ChalidRaqami Well refresh doesn't have to be fast. I imagine a foto frame needs to change the picture maybe once a day. So you insert an SD card with your photo collection, and the frame shows a random one every day. Since only the actual change requires power, this could be done with the tiniest of solar cells.

As always, a great discussion and I think you hit it right on the head. Current color e-ink is not something I would consider, especially with the need for refresh technologies and battery performance. However, the clarity on the Galley was very nice once it was a stable image because of the color particles. Unfortunately, I am not sure what would be required from a hardware perspective to make it sustainable and usable. That being said, maybe readers are the best use to begin and experiment with. It seems that maybe Kobo and Amazon could make some real progress here. Thanks again for the video, I always enjoy them.

Problem I'd everyone now wants a 7" reader or close to it. The 6" nowadays is becoming less popular, and to keep costs down would be a 6" reader. Have heard rumors maybe an 8" so not in the average person's pocket. Would be premium I think ar that, so maybe 2 models
@selforganisation
@selforganisation Месяц назад
I have an 6" device, albeit not a color one. And while this size is good for books (at least re-flowable formats), it's too small for comic books. Certainly not easy to read if you have full-page or even fit-to-width. You can rotate the screen but then you see like 1/3 of page width at a time. And comic books are I think one of the main reasons to get a color device. I don't have an 7.8" device like inkpad color 3 or boox tab mini c, but my smartphone's screen has almost the exact same height as such a screen, and at this height comics are readable enough full-page. Though this is still a compromise, a typical physical copy of a western comic book is a bit larger than the 10.3" devices, so those would be perfect size-wise.

I always use my E-reader without the backlight / frontlight on, with few exceptions. There are currently no studies that i’m aware of that prove an E-reader with frontlight is any better than a phone or tablet screen. Because of this, I won’t be getting a colour E-reader until it can be used with no frontlight.

Thanks for this update but I'm going to be honest, I follow your channel because you are a hard-core Star Trek fan! I'm going to have to start reading those Star Trek comics, any recommendations where to start? I would love to see a Star Trek Legacy comic since Paramount seems determined to keep recycling nostalgia instead of "boldly" going forward with new stories, new crews, and new ships.

@ChalidRaqami Месяц назад
Thanks :D I'd recommend starting with Lower Decks if you like the show. I found that comic especially easy to get into because it looks and feels the same as the show. Next, I'd go for SNW (even if that's a bit recycled nostalgia, I actually was pleasantly surprised at how well it works; would still like to see a continuation of the 24/25th century timeline), as the show is still running, and I also found that makes it easier to get into. Also the artwork is very well done and close to the RL characters and style.

I suspect another Kobo color ereader will just have a bigger screen but will use the exact same technology used as in the Libra Colour. So I wouldn't wait for an improved screen tech in this case and only hold off buying the Libra Color if you want the bigger screen itself. But that larger Kobo device will definitely be more expensive (I expect something around 400 USD - same as the Elipsa 2E).

so the smaller they can make the particles the better they can make the filter..
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
Yes but it’s still a filter. Also as a filter I doesn’t really use particle. It’s a static filter. But the smaller they can make the CMYK particles then of course the better crispness and color vibrancy they can make. I just assume that speed and energy will still be and issue. With filter you still just have your black particles to control. With real CMYK it’s a lot more physical movement complexity. Also with filter I assume it’s as now possible to have a different resultion of the color separated from the black resolution. Which has performance benefits. This is not possible with real color particles. But that also makes it more real color. I think there will in the end by two parallel tracks. The quick and dirty dilrrr based color for many consumers that just want a bit of color and are not so picky. They want to have a cheap and snappy experience And then are those who want really good quality sharp color images. Even if it’s slower. For sure for digital screens / ads / art etc. the gallery (hence its name) is still the way to go
@mcavity
@mcavity Месяц назад
@@litjellyfish I ment the epaper particles which on this one is black and white. The more they can shrink those and still control them the finer they can make the static color filter..
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
@@mcavity yes and I mean it’s a win win. Better resolution of the black is great. Still even with finer filter it will always darken the screen. And never get saturation. But it means that at least we will not have to color downgrade the black sharpness and remove the grain. And a bit front light removes the grey. But at the cost of color saturation and blackness = less intense color and contrast

BTW you should keep an eye on the postproduction you put on your videos when talking about color eink because these devices colors are amazing and does not look anything like the washout pastel tone that you see in real life. @bellissimo4520
@bellissimo4520 3 дня назад
With the frontlight, you can compensate it. Then the color screens basically look the same as the b/w screens. The obvious drawback of this is power usage - the frontlight will drain the battery a lot faster. Oh, and of course whenever you are actually in bright, direct sunlight, then these color screens look perfectly fine too, without any frontlight. So if you read mostly outside, than they are fine anyway.

Gallery 3 - as it was released in the Bigme Galy - was the first-gen end-consumer version of Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP). I suspect there's a lot more room for improvement than with E-Ink Kaleido. Kaleido with its passive RGB filter will always have the problem of the darker screen's background. Someone on reddit found the Himax/E-Ink press release for a new ACeP controller: markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/e-ink-and-himax-unveil-advanced-color-epaper-timing-controller-asic-t2000-1033615924

Printing on paper uses CMYK (with K = Key = Black) to get around the somewhat lacklustre black produced by combining Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks (In addition to a number of other benefits to using black ink in addition to CMY). Perhaps they should make an e-ink screen with five pigments: White, Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.
