I was curious about e-readers, but I didn't wanted to shell out the money for one without _knowing_ I would use it. I have a habit of buying hobby items only to immediately drop them. So, my mom reminded me that my late grandmother had a bunch of kindles I could pick from. I gave her old Kindle Keyboard a fresh battery and it works like a charm! Not sure why, but I'm reading so much _more_ with it. The page turn buttons are great, and I can even read in the bathtub with my trusty Ziploc bag! I wasn't a fan of the rotating screensavers, but it was super easy to jailbreak so I could keep it on the bird and fish screensavers that I liked. Now I don't know if I even want to upgrade to a modern version! If this one breaks I may just keep buying kindle keyboards. And I'm sure my grandma would love that I'm getting back into reading with her old device :)
@@LizzardBeth96I download books from my Amazon library and transfer via usb cable because I can’t get wireless to work even after updating. It’s an extra step but not that bad. I have a newer Kindle with working wireless, I still prefer reading on the older Kindle Keyboard though.
@@LizzardBeth96 You need a PC or laptop. Download the books on your PC in mobi format. Plug your kindle into the usb port of your pc, and drag and drop the book files to the documents folder.
I only use my old Kindle now because new ones have a reflective screen which is difficult to read in sunlight; something I'm surprised more people don't comment on.
Just had one of these fall into my hands for free and was going to recycle it. Did a little research first and your post turned me around! Loving this reader and thanks for posting!!
Oh my goodness thank you so much for making this video! I have just purchased this like 10 years ago and I had it in storage with my things and it’s safely stored but charging very nicely it was one that I had picked up from a secondhand shop for a extremely good price and I am charging it right now to see if it will work it seems like it’s charging nicely so I am very optimistic after this review that you’ve given and looking forward to getting some new books on it. It also helps that I am a prime member so hopefully I should be able to get some really decent books on here for free. Thank you so much! ❤
Thanks, one of my students just mentioned he has one. And I was probably going to get a new one on Black Friday. But I think I'll just get this one and keep it forever 😄. I'm getting it for about 10$.
I've been using a Kindle 4 since 2013. It needs a charge every 400-500 pageturns (maybe more?), but otherwise I'm absolutely loving it. I only miss the screen light but I'm planning to use the device until it dies on me. I can send epub files through email or drag and drop pdf-s.
I got given one of these years ago when my mum upgraded to a new one- I only used it once on holiday to Thailand (where I’d wanted to travel light). Tried to use it recently and the battery seemed dead but left it plugged in and a week later it sprang to life! I’ve just synced it up and bought a new book that I “delivered” to it and it already had 100 books on it 🥂
I found my old Kindle 3 from years ago recently too and it is stuck on a screen that says that I need to charge it or restart it. I've tried both and they don't seem to work. I plugged it in for one full day and over night, but it's still stuck on the same low battery screen. Maybe I'll try your tactic and plug it in for a week and see if it works! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks. I have Kindle 3 since 2010, using it all the time. No Kindle update would satisfy me since Kindle 3 has it all. What would I improve? The ideal Kindle would be based on Kindle 3. It would have 6.8" paper white screen but it wouldn't have to be much larger since I would get rid of the the keyboard buttons except for those 3 vertical and three horizontal buttons down on the right corner. I love the page changing buttons on both sides. Everything else like the Kindle 3 including the text to speech etc. I know it wouldn't happen but I'm not going for any update since everything since is worst...
@@georgedvorak9481 Yup, I've found many listings on such sites. One question I have is that, is it easy to use or does it require a lot of fiddling around?
@@afaqahmad2806 its trivial to use. Two downsides: 1. The kindle store no longer works on it, as its out of date. 2. There's no backlight. Thats about it.
I have one. I've had mine since this model was almost new. The battery on mine was pretty run down from years of being left uncharged. The batteries are a very reasonable price, and the replacement so easy it's delightful. The hardest part it getting the back off without cracking it (oops). The battery itself is just held in place by two screws.
I’ve had my Kindle Keyboard since 2010 and it runs like a tank despite the fact that I recently replaced the battery. I take the device offline and just read the books and play the games I have loaded on it. I have plenty of books and games to keep me busy for a long time.
@@JuliaTalks777it’s a simple job. Batteries are available from a number of eBay sellers. You then just need to remove the back of the Kindle, unscrew the 2 screws holding in the battery, screw in the new battery, put the back of the Kindle on again. RU-vid videos are available to walk you through it step-by-step as well.
I have this kindle and have loved it! My battery is now junk and Amazon doesn’t make the replacement battery any longer. I’m worried to buy a third party for fear of the battery “catching fire” as it does happen so I was forced to purchase a new kindle last week. I went with the basic model but it is not the kindle 3. Amazon needs to update this model. The keyboard and the page turners are greatly missed.
as someone who wants a kindle for manga i would say save up for a reseller selling a kindle for around 65 pounds to 75 pounds for example right now on ebay i can get a 2022 kindle for 65 pounds what has good sharp pixels but lets say you want to souley read books to be honest if u want something cheap it doesnt matter what you use just make sure that it isnt absolutely terrible for the price
I had this kindle when it came out because of the 3G connectivity...fast forward now...ahem. But I managed to get some games for this when the kindle used to support them. So I love the word games on it. So recently I took a holiday and when we came into land, I put the kindle under my thigh to secure it. When I went to use it...the screen broke. I just couldn't get a new one, and went to ebay to get a replacment (as well the games don't work on later models). I love this version.
One things that'd be interesting: How's the browser? Can I just plug it in a charger, open a website that peiodically updates/reloads itself, and always have the up to date information at a glance?
I have the 4th gen kindle I bought from the thrift store for $1.60. It works perfectly fine. I even was able to update the kindle to the device's latest software. but I can't login. I turned off the 2-step verification and I still can't login in. I also can't change the time. help?
Yes you can transfer, just plug your Kindle via USB cable and when it shows up on your file browser, copy and paste books into folder "Documents". This is how I did with my Kindle 4 many years without even switching on Wi-Fi etc.. :))
Can you please link the usb charger that you use ? I can’t seem to find it on Amazon , I need some help with this as I just bought this kindle and want to drag and drop some of my books from the laptop to the kindle
@@RuggsTech thanks for your reply. I think I have a different version then (older) cuz It’s not the micro usb. I luckily found the cable I need to use on Amazon
I still have my Kindle 3 and recently replaced the battery for the first time. I love my old Kindle, but I do not know how to move books from my Mac Kindle app to my older Kindle 3. I have a cover for my Kindle that has a built-in reading light that I enjoy using in low light situations. Any suggestions? I cannot see spending the money for a new reader when this one works so well. I recently replaced by battery for about $14.00 dollars. Do you know if amazon still provides updates for older versions of Kindles?
My kindle just came in today can you please make another video teaching how to use this kindle bcs I dont even know where to find the file I sent to it 😂
Converted PDFs aren’t great. I always find some formatting issues, one I frequently get is apostrophes are presented with a long string of text and numbers
@@RuggsTech Thank you. I found some old resource that only works up to the keyboard models on how to install a pdf reader app on it. It's an ancient thread in a forum called 'mobileread' and the thread is called 'KPV: a PDF reader for Kindle, based on muPDF, GPLv3'. It's a little effort but might be interesting for anyone that is into tech or little challenges :)
so I am a fan of physical books and I want to experience kindle, your video has helped me ty! I am just wondering if the store isn't working then what's the catch in buying kindle?
You can still buy kindle books and transfer them over via usb cable. Make sure the kindle books you buy are in .MOBI format for compatibility. You can also download heaps of public domain books for free (legally) online.
I bought one of these after watching this video but when I plug it into my mac nothing happens. I can't download anything and my mac doesn't even detect it... The version is kindle 3.0.2 and I need to update it and I found in amazon the softwares I need but I can't do anything if my mac can't detect it. Can someone help ?
Are there any new options that are as good? I have a 3 but it seems like they are slowly dropping support and changing things to the point it won’t be usable
You can for now. But the kindle 3 only supports .MOBI files and Amazon is stopping support for emailing .mobi file types. I’ve sent a few .EPUB files and the formatting isn’t great, every apostrophe formats like this “
Would you mind helping me with the steps on how to download the books from amazon to the kindle? I have been trying for awhile and cannot figure it out. Thank you!
They effectively bricked these, you cannot put new books from kindle on here, I was told by customer service it was due to a lack of hardware for TTL and encrypted comms. If you have a way to continue to use this I would love to know since Amazon and Kindle have basically screwed us all over.
I’m having no issues. The Amazon store on the kindle doesn’t work, but I can still send books to this kindle via email or plug it into my computer and copy and paste files over
did you just rename the title of your video fro 2023 to 2024 just to get more views? this video was out in 2023...even it states 2023 in its main image, and itself...ugh...sleazy tactics of viewer desperate people
The relevance of the content remains the same in my eyes. Nothing has changed since I made the video - yes I could make a new one evaluating it in 2024 as I still use it every day. But I would just be repeating the same thing. I even updated the description explaining my decision to rename the title as my views haven't changed.
