i am always torn between buying the physical book or just getting the kindle version. I love my kindle but i love having books on my shelf... see i dont know which one to buy! But, I enjoy having the physical book and getting the kindle version from the library so that i can read it on my kindle at night when everyone goes to bed. So basically it comes down to needing a copy on my kindle and on my bookshelf!
Yes, I understand that exact struggle! I don't necessarily want to buy the book twice but I want it in both formats :) I will say those kindle deals can be amazing, $2-5 dollars for a book is too good to pass up!
This is exactly what I would do if I had an ebook reader! I just think I would have a terrible time with the idea of having any given book on Kindle and it's not on my bookshelf!!!

No digital books, just... no!😂 Holding that beautiful book in your hands, smelling those ink laden pages, and flipping to the next page brings so much satisfaction and stimulation to me. I just cannot fathom sitting there... scroll... scroll... scroll... nope. I'll still watch the rest of the video, maybe you will make some valid points and change my mind. Love your content!!!!
Update: So I finished watching the video😉 You make some really good points, and you also mentioned exactly what I commented about above!! The Kindle is definitely convenient, and it would be nice to be able to bring my entire library (and it's a big one) with me wherever I go. Hmm, am I thinking about getting one? I know exactly what you went through with your law school story! I am a scientist for a very large pharmaceutical company, and I interact with a lot of very important people. This has happened to me as well. I'm sorry, but when I want to take a break, I grab my book and immerse myself in that lovely world! A few people have commented on why I am reading that book (it happened to be "Malice" by John Gwynne). Well, I'm sorry I am not reading scholarly papers on my break... it's my break... 'nuff said!
I agree with a lot of the things you've said. In the end, the important thing is that people can connect with books, no matter the how. For myself, the Kindle was always a dream come true. I live in Germany and I had a Kindle shipped from the US in 2011 right away, when they came out. My physical "things" (books, cds, games, comics) that I had been collecting for 2 decades then where just to much, so I've transitioned to digital formats. I feel the same as you about the practicality while reading. No strain on the wristsa nd no shadow on the pages. I'm also a crazy person that reads a lot of books at the same time, always switching between them. E-Readers make this habit super-comfortable. There are also a couple of things you mentioned that might be specific to books or maybe the e-reader. I personally own an Oasis and this one lets me open a second layer of the book that enables me to scroll pretty fast to things like maps and dramtis personae and when I close that second layer I'm still where I stopped reading on the first layer. It also puts links under all the footnotes like in Discworld books and when you click on the footnote it opens a pop-up window with the content of the footnotes. As always, thank you for the video. Your enthusiasm for reading always shines bright and you have a real gift for making people feeling excited for reading, despite as all just being these weird fantsay and specualtive fiction readers. This all, of course, is just a question of perspection. So, a Nicole with a Wheel of Time book would always be a person I would happily approach to talk all things fantasy. :)

The e-readers have made reading a lot more accessible and I personally love it as well! That's good to know that about the Oasis, maybe I'll need to do an upgrade haha I love reading multiple books at the same time as well, and the Kindle makes it so easy to carry all of them with you all the time!
Hi Nicole. I totally agree. I love having physical copy of books but I love my kindle. Very convenient to read on. Only had mine a month so far im reading faster and more. I said i would never buy a kindle. But i went to the darkside 😂. I fear the same with the world we live in books are changed. I recommend anyone to buy a physical copy of George Orwell's 1984.
It's just so hard for me to do physical books nowadays. The font is too small, they take up too much space and they're uncomfortable on my wrists to prop open for long periods of time (especially these tiny mass market epic fantasy books that are thicker than they are tall). At this point in my life, I treat physical books more like vinyl records. I buy them to support the author or to show off some of my favorite books, but if it's on my physical bookshelf I guaranteed own it and read it on the Kindle. It's nice now that Stormlight Archive, cradle and dungeon crawler Carl have used Kickstarter to make some amazing leatherbound books that I can look at and pan through, but I doubt I'll ever crack them open to read them.
I have done the same thing! I love having the physical of the books I enjoy, but the majority of my reading is on the Kindle, it is just so much more comfortable and convenient. I feel like I can read more on the kindle as well since it is not as hard on the eyes. I don't want to need reading glasses yet haha
This is another very good point. I just finished "Rhythm of War" by Branderson, and it is a very heavy read (as well as for the rest of the series so far). I like to classify these type of tomes as "will kill if thrown". With a Kindle, one needs not worry about carpal tunnel from reading excessively large bricks. If I keep reading these great comments, I may have some inner struggles with myself as to whether I need a Kindle!!! UGH!!!!
I tried the Kindle app on a 12" tablet and I just didn't care for it. I work in front of a PC all day and have all my backgrounds set to black because staring at the light source becomes unpleasant after a while. I had the same issue with reading on a tablet. It may not even be that it's a light source - it may be that the light is a different level from the room light even if I try to fine-tune the light level. Almost my entire library is hard cover (even WOT and Sanderson's works). For me, reading is, in itself, an experience regardless of the story - the heft, smell, placing the bookmark, flipping the pages, and so on. For the big books, I just find positions like having my feet up on the desk where I can rest the book on my legs or lean it against a pillow if I'm in bed. If I want to know how much of a book is left, I can just glance at where the bookmark is (and I have a decent collection of nice bookmarks). I generally don't care about other people's opinions of me, so I'll carry a monster Sanderson book with me to the doctor's office or wherever. Some people will scoff at "the nerd", but... f**k 'em... not people I would want to get to know anyway. I'm also leary of not having a physical copy - I still buy CDs for music. Even the books I bought for reading through the Kindle app were eventually bought in physical versions.
I can understand where it would be hard on your eyes especially if you have to deal with screen use all the time. But yes, having the physical is important, I am always worried my ebooks will get deleted on me or something. I do miss not being able to easily see how much I have left in the book or the feel of the book, but the ease of carrying the Kindle and the cheaper prices are a big perk for me--although I end up buying both formats for the books I liked!
I like the Kindle app alot on a tablet and phone because plenty of books introduce new characters with full color photos, which then looks much better in color. Same for the maps shown in many fantasy novels at the start. Dark background with white text is how I like reading on the Kindle app, it's easier on my eyes. I probably have 300 books on my Kindle app and I'd NEVER have enough space for the physical versions.
I have the Paperwhite too. I like it. I don't use all the features. Technology is not my thing. I prefer physical books but the Kindle is good for traveling.
I do a lot of audio books. I can't read on a screen. I'm too easily distracted by screens all day so being able to kind of relax away from a screen with a physical book. It's an amazing de-tox. Audio books the device can be away from me or in the car and I love the audio books. I probably do mostly audio. So I totally get a lot of your points. For me it's just I cannot read on a screen. It's just too foreign haha
That's great! Audiobooks are great reading format since it allows for even more reading time when you may not be able to otherwise, such as when driving. As long as people are getting to enjoy books that's all that matters!
