IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION. I PREVIOUSLY POSTED THE ORIGINAL BUT YT GAVE ME A STRIKE FOR IT. SO I POSTED THIS VERSION THAT IS SAID TO BE FROM A BOX SET THAT SHOWS THIS EARLY VERSION. SORRY FOR THAT!!!
BUT THIS VERSION IS QUITE INTERESTING TOO, ENJOY IT!!!
“Epitaph” is the third track on King Crimson’s October 1969 debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King. Noted for its heavy use of mellotron and Greg Lake’s emotional vocals, the lyrics were written by the band’s primary lyricist, Peter Sinfield, with additional contributions from Lake. Sinfield spoke of the song in a 2019 interview:
‘Epitaph’ was a poem that I’d written when I had my own band. It started with the words, and then it was very much a piece of ensemble writing. Ian McDonald would come up with an idea, then someone else. I think Greg came up with the idea: ‘But I fear tomorrow I’ll be crying’, which is very Greg-ish.
The subtitle for this track is listed as “Including ‘March for No Reason’ and ‘Tomorrow and Tomorrow,’” though it’s not indicated which part is which. It’s likely that these subtitles were invented as a way of earning more royalties, suggested to the band by their management.
The word epitaph has Greek origins and is a combination of the words “epi” (meaning “on”) and “taphos” (which means tomb). The translation regards something that is inscribed on a tombstone. Epitaphs are placed on tombs to honor the deceased person buried inside. Though sometimes chosen by a person other than the deceased, it is generally seen as representative of their final thoughts or a description of their life.
[Instrumental Intro]
[Verse 1]
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
When silence drowns the screams?
[Chorus]
Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl, a cracked and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
[Verse 2]
Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
If no one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools
[Instrumental: “March for No Reason”]
[Verse 1]
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
When silence drowns the screams?
[Chorus]
Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl, a cracked and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Crying…
Crying…
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Crying…
[Outro: “Tomorrow and Tomorrow”]
[Instrumental]

I was 5yrs old in 1969. My oldest sister was 16. She was into all the Rock bands at the time and collected all the vinyl too.! Which I would eventually own.!! My stand outs were The Doors Light my Fire which I would dance to. She taught me. Alice Cooper Killer. That whole album I begged her to always play. And this album. I would just sit and stare at the cover.! The whole first side is in my DNA.!! Still today.! We lived about 30 min from Woodstock.! She begged my mom to let her go. Mom said NO.! She cried so hard that I cried with her. I was 5 yrs old.! She used to babysit me. I was around her friends all the time. Lots of pot smoking n some drinking. They were all so great. Magical times.! RIP Nancy and thank you for turning me on to the music and all those memories..

Similar story, but I was 12 when this came out. My mate had two older brothers who were working and had a great record collection which we would tuck into when they were not about. 10 years after, taste, cream, John mayall, and of course this LP. Can still remember vividly the first time I saw the cover. A great musical education.

I was 8 years old in 1969.My oldest sister was 14.We lived in the USSR. We didn’t even know about the existence of such groups. I heard King Crimson only in 1977, on the radio. I think it was Polish radio 3 (troika). Now I have all their CDs in my collection. And this disc was on vinyl in the 80s. I bought it second-hand for 50 Soviet rubles. This is how we lived in the USSR, we were cut off from the whole world, and missed a lot in our lives. And it’s so sad to realize this now.

We underrate Napoleon's achievements and potential to bring about a more just western Europe. Sure he made mistakes and Wellington's attack from Portugal and Spain undermined his strategy- leading to his defeat at Waterloo and the eventual rise of the Cabal into a more prominent, if hidden position. Peter Sinfield understood this and it is reflected in his lyrics without being too obvious!@@alverdeo965

@merk9569

@@tomcody8184. I think you need to do more research on Greg Lake! He was a very kind, considerate and thoughtful man. I’ve read hundreds of comments on his videos; invariably, people who knew and worked with him expressed what a genuinely nice person he was. He was generous with his time and often helped younger musicians with suggestions. I only became familiar with his music in the last few months. I wouldn’t have spent time getting to “know him as a person” had he been anything less. As an example, Greg married his wife at the height of his stardom at age 25, his wife at 21. When he died of cancer at age 69, they were still together and vey much in love. That must be a measure of being a likable person!

Patos instrumentacji. Perfekcyjne wykonanie. Brak jakichkoleiek niedociągnięć i wreszcie głos Greg,a Lake. Naszym dzieciom i wnukom.

@@carlosanguineti956 Trust me, there's plenty of good music out now. Tyler, The Creator is one of the greatest musicians of our time, and he's very mainstream. Modern music will never sound like how it used to, but accepting change can make you realize that even if something is different, new, or obscure it can still be equally amazing. A lot of people from my generation would think this music sucks, but if you keep an open mind you realize how amazing older music is and how well albums like Court of the Crimson King age, it really is enligthening. I'm not telling you to love modern music, it's perfectly fine to not like it and, in all honesty, a lot more trash gets through to the mainstream and top 100 charts than it should. Even if we have to dig a little deeper, the young generations are doing just fine when it comes to new musicians and music. I mean, hell, even a long time ago you had to "dig a little deeper" to find King Crimson. The landscape of music is constantly changing, but the overall quality hardly ever declines.

Michael Giles drumming is spectacular. His style was shared by a few, but his execution is class of one. A very different sound than we would have for the next 50 years, and one I love. Ultra-dry, impactful and lyrical. Bowie would use that same approach for a lot of years.

It is often asked if there is an album or song that 'changed your life'. I usually chuckle at that sentiment... But on reflection 50 years plus after the fact... my first listen to this album, and perhaps it was even this song, this did indeed change my musical listening directions and opened my senses to musicians, songs and a genre of music that to this day is timeless.

I was 18 when this came out. We used to sit down in Grosvenor Square, in front of the USA embassy, protesting the war in Vietnam. We had dreams of peace and brotherhood, but also nightmares of war and destruction. Fifty-three years later we find our dreams crushed and a new Hitler rising. This beautiful piece of work is, more than ever, pertinent. And tragic.
