Starless by King Crimson. Another taster from the new King Crimson album - ""Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind".
As those lucky enough to have seen it live will know, the opening chord of this song are often accompanied by an intake of breath. Like an incoming tide of realisation, all the variations on "I never thought I’d hear this live", or "crikey, this is my favourite", "OMG I’ve died and gone to heaven" and a few more sentiments besides.
The complexities behind capturing the seven-headed Crimson on video are described in David Singleton's liner notes :
"It is something of a truism in the history of Crimson that any show that is filmed will not be one when heaven meets earth and the angels descend. The presence of cameras and cameramen iintroduces an intrusive element into the relationship between the artist, the music and the audience. Our solution was to return to the concept of ""BootlegTV"" and prioritise the music and the performance rather than the pictures. We embedded a single cameraman (the long-suffering Trevor Wilkins) on this tour, and he filmed every night with a a series of cameras hidden discreetly on the stage where they would intrude on neither artist nor audience. The compromise is thus in the visuals and not in the music."
The set was recently described by John Kelman in "All about jazz" as ""the definitive live Crimson release from the definitive live Crimson lineup; a landmark recording from a group whose discography is filled with them.

I don't hear it as menacing at all. There are two memorable riffs in the song, one is the grand and rather pretty, though sad, main theme that has been played on violin, saxophone, or guitar in different versions of KC. The other is the "Chinese water torture" guitar riff that now takes two guitarists to play because the fewer the different notes, the more guitars you need, or something.

What the hell. Who does that? Builds tension by plucking just one note. Going up a half step or a step. For several minutes. That's so bold and ballsy. Fripp, playing for the music, and even though an incredibly gifted chop-master, he never flexes, he services the song. This song is absolutely amazing.

Lots of Supertramp, Fleetwood, Rush, Tom Petty, Led Zep, The Police, Mercyful Fate, Deep Purple, etc. This is so wonderful. I don't really have words to express what I'm going through right now listening to and watching this rendition but needless to say, I'm going into a full King Crimson journey now. What a band. Song Meaning; ( Dig this Fransetb ;) ) This song is simply about the futility of living. It closed one of the most powerful chapters in progressive rock history and with it closed the most intriguing chapter of King Crimson. The first verse refers to the brightness of adolescent life, of the demure touch of a beautiful sunny day to spark one's imagination, but the verse reveals that a bright and enthusiastic world does not export its beauty to you. All things that world promised you fade to black and you are lifeless in a sunny world. The second verse confirms that sadness will extrapolate over all of your desires and dreams, that your life will retain the emptiness and the lack of meaning over time, the bright disingenuity of younger days will never shine on you again The third verse is the most interesting as it hauntingly describes the poisoning of the soul by which no helping hand or smile could rescind the damage that has been done to you by the world and by time, true hopelessness has ensued. The chorus of the song is a very interesting metaphor. In the most unequivocal sense it means that your skies have become starless for nothing you will see will ever compel you again - and so it entails that you are stained bible black. Whatever spirituality or happy hopes in the world exist that could have placated you are dead and black, but held habitually by time and empty hope. Finally the most important verse of all - the one spoken by Robert Fripp. The monotone squeal of his guitar piece that occupies the next 5 or so minutes after the third verse is like the progression of time from months, to years, to decades. The child who acknowledged the dying of his world has lived a zombie all his life and finally sees the inexorability of his own death in his final hour after an age of emptiness. The last 3 minutes of the song are powerful but the last minute postulated absolute death. It is the most powerful minute in Rock history and probably a contributor to such events like Kurt Cobain committing suicide, Cobain regarded this album 'Red' as the greatest rock album of all time... ...When that last minute hits you, you finally taste the pathos of the character described in the song, because you see that character to be you. You see your own death, and the worthlessness of your own life, it is beautiful, terrifying, and on an implicit level - why most people love this song to death. This song ended a golden age Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this (i took this songmeaning from the internet, its not mine ;) )

I can see how you’d be surprised. It’s definitely a unique yet amazing sound. People don’t realize how much experimentation you can do and how drastically you can change the sound. Electric guitars are fascinating in their capabilities of producing all sorts of different sounds. You just have to take the time to experiment with different equipment and untraditional setups. Then have the balls to record or play live with the unique sound you created.

I can't see an Ebow in his right hand so he is probably using a Fernandes Sustainer to get those long-sustaining violin tones. I googled the question and found a post on The Gear Page that said that for the past 30 years he has played with a Fernandes sustainer pickup in his guitars. So while not 100% certain, this is likely how he is doing it.

You are, of course, right, when you think of how progressive rock tends to focus on ornate virtuosity. What makes this song so famous, however, is Fripp's single-note assault on the senses. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the canon. It focuses the attention like nothing else.

Until I watched, I didn't realize that single note was being passed back and forth between the two guitars. That was more captivating than the drumming! And we got to see the quiet, subtle percussion being played.

I was 14 when first heard and truly listened to King Crimson...and though difficult and distorted....l found a thread through...once l had that...the rest is history..always top class thoughtful music...that does take time to fully appreciate....but when you do...just lovely, one floats and still do...at 66 years old..the feeling inside of what it can do never changes ...only people and problems..the stars are normally bright on a clear night even when a clouds covers them...but never alters the fact that they are there...no matter what. The same can be said of this music...Great👍👍👍👏👏

Crimson is the shit. That is all. Now before this devolves into the typical YT pissing match of “my band is better than your band,” there are MANY great bands doing incredible things. Hats off to them all - true artists respect other artists work, even if it’s different from their own vision. But remember - Crimson was at the forefront of this particular genre, and all these years later absolutely kicks ass and reproduces this faithfully live in concert. Absolutely stellar performances the two times I’ve been fortunate to see them.

@@jamesha175 From wikipedia: "During the early years of King Crimson (1968-74), Fripp used two Gibson Les Paul guitars from 1957 and 1959. The '57 guitar featured three humbucker pick-ups (with one volume control on the pickguard controlling the middle pick-up). In the band's 1980s era, he favored Roland GR-303 & GR-808 guitars for both straight guitar and synth control. In subsequent years, Fripp has used customized Les Paul-style guitars by Tokai, 48th St Custom, and Fernandes (the latter being his current choice). A signature model named for the guitarist (Crimson Guitars Robert Fripp Signature)[33] features Fernandes Sustainer and MIDI pickups with a Les Paul-style Body. A significant difference from the Gibson Les Paul is that the signature model is built using a deep set neck tenon rather than a traditional set neck.
