Just to add to his type of character, during the 1926 General Strike, the Conservative Prime Minister suggested the workers on strike were revolutionaries. George responded: "Try living on their wages before you judge them".

When George V died, his widow, in a surprising act, sent to Wilhelm II a little golden box which the king was very fond of. The former Kaiser, after many years without speaking with her, wrote a letter in response, beginning with "deeply moved, my cousin" :'-( This story is told by author Miranda Carter in her book 'Three Emperors'.

My great-great grandmother sent a personal letter to the king begging him to bring her son home from the frontline (he was only 15) and within a week he was home. I don't know whether the king personally got the letter, but whoever did went out of their way to make sure a young boy was brought home to their mother. He joined back when up when he was 18 and was shot at Yypres but thankfully survived.

And yet he would have agreed. He did his duty, however silly, and if his duty requires him to die a few hours early, that is no less demanding than many hundreds of other requests placed on him. Its mentioned because its such a fitting way for him to have died. Not to say being King isn't a sweet deal. I'm just saying his death is very much in line with his character.

agentm83 It's interesting that the Queen, his grand daughter, loved him, whilst her sister, Prince Margaret, said he was a horrible old man. He was strict but had a sense of humour. At one royal reception a guest talking to him broke wind. To save his guest from embarrassment the king looked down and saw a dog. He kicked it and said, 'filthy brute '. The dog was a large piece of antique Chinese porcelain and shattered.

At the time of Queen Victoria, the rule of succession dictated that the first born male would become sovereign, hence Edward, then George. However, if today's rule of succession, that dictates the first born child will become sovereign, was in place in Victoria's time, then her eldest child, Victoria Jr. would have become queen. When she died six months later, her son Wilhelm would have become king of England, as well as kaiser of Germany!

I think it may have to do with his grooming as a simple navy officer, not as an heir to start with. Same goes with his sons : heir ? Nothing to get out of him, he quickly shocks everyone then abdicates. Second son ? Carries England through the German Blitz at the risk of his own life and family to bring support to his subjects, fights off a stammer because a nation looks up to him, and never gives up the struggle against possibly the worst regime that existed on this Earth.

There is still a strong family resemblance. If you look at the film of the reinterment of Tsar Nicholas you will see that the British representative is HRH Prince Michael of Kent, first cousin to the Queen. The resemblance is clear.

King Peter I of Serbia needs an episode. Only monarch who was a true soldier and had a crown made out of his grandfathers cannon . He led his people and army through Albania on foot in middle of winter. Him and his son were on frontlines under Fire rallying countrymen sharing the horrors of War. Also king had a habbit of disguising in pesant clothes and talking with a common folk.

True. What is less known is that king Peter translated work of English philosopher John Stuart Mill `On Liberty`, with his own foreword. That essay had great influence on Peter and it will become basics for king`s political (and social) program.

This was actually an amazing video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I never knew how much I didn't know about this particular topic. Unlike other crazy and almost unbelievable wacky monarchs of Europa during ww1 that I do know of this dude seemed so chill and ahead of his time. If the many maybe had a little more power/influence I believe he alone could of had the power to create a peace in Ireland whilst maintaining it within the empire.

Hi Indy and Team! Many thanks for your great work! I want to suggest three personalities for "WHO DID WHAT IN WW1?" who served in the Austro-Hungarian Army (two served during WW1, one died shortly before the war but had possibly an effect on its course). I recommended them in another video once (OotT about Savage Divisions) but in case my post was overlooked, I post them here again: a.) Engelbert Dolfuß: The clerical-fascist dictator of the 1st Republic of Austria who rose to power due to a coup he orchestrated. It is said that he received 8 medals of gallantry during WW1 and often wore his Uniform of that time during the rallies of his party. b.) Theodor Körner (not to be confused with the infamous German soldier in the Napoleonic Wars who bears the same name): Social-Democratic president of the Second Republic of Austria and the first one that was democratically elected after WW2. Before his presidancy, he was also the mayor of Vienna (1945 until 1951). c.) Alfred Redl: He dcommitted suicide slightly before WW1 but perhaps his deeds had an effect on the War: A high official of the Austria-Hungarian Intelligence who was homosexual and was - as far as I can remember - blackmailed by Russian intelligence with the fact and forced him to hand them over strategic information, which he did. The aforementioned Theodor Körner was accused of having a sexual relationship with him. There is also a drama film (title: Colonel Redl) about this person.
