They all smoked heavily those days, but he had the horrendous stress of public life and WWII to contend with. He might have made it to 70, just like the Duke of Windsor did, if not for the stress. I'm just glad that he got to enjoy the love of his wife and daughters.
This documentary does not mention that Bertie was naturally left handed and as was typical of the times he was forced to write right handed. He also was ill-treated by a governess who favored his older brother. Both of these situations would have impacted his feelings of self-worth.
My left hand fominsnt father was forced fti write with his right hand my left dominant grand daughter writes wuite her left hand in the first decades of the 20c children of all classes in most European countries had to write with their tight hands not just bertie

George VI (Albert) was more precious, quite simply put, than Edward. George VI was very good looking in my opinion, long slender face, soft doe eyes, and lightly fluffy hair. Everyone doesn't need to be domineering. Albert was a good husband and father to Elizabeth and Margaret, he's respectable for that alone
Add in the stress of the war. Did not help matters. I mean, you are the leader, facing a destructive force, and you also have a family to consider. What courage that took!
@hippiechick2112 true, that's why it's better to have a council of people, a panel instead of one ruler or something like that, like in Switzerland as far as I know. They have a council taking decisions for the country instead of just one person.
George V aka grandpa England was the first modern monarch, he saved, modernized and strengthened the monarchy, he funded the Windsor House. He wasnt the best father, but he loved his children. Read his biographies by Jane Ridley and Alexandra Churchill and stop perpetuating myths. Being a disciplinary father doesnt make you a m.o.nster
God bless his soul.So dutiful was he.I was born more than 50 years after his death, yet I still feel sad over it all. This video helps me mourn his loss to us . His work remains to be of great importance to the lives of many in coming generations
Not to belittle the American visit, but the King and Queen had originally visited Canada, to strengthen British Canadian ties in the event of war with Germany. Canada had lost many men in the first world War and might not declare war again.
Hang on! You called him “George,” in the photo of him between his older brother, Edward (David) & younger brother, George! His name was “Albert,” (Bertie), until he came to the throne when he was virtually forced or forcibly “encouraged” to choose his regal name of George, by his mother, Queen Mary, who wanted to honor her deceased husband, & the PM Winston Churchill who thought “Albert,” was too German! However, even after becoming crowned king, he was still called his name, Bertie & not by his title, which was George.
he chose his own regnal name, and chose George to show the continuity of the Monarchy he was not forced, every Monarch has to choose a regnal name for the purpose of their reign, and they inform the ascension council of the regnal name they have chosen, Queen Mary was not part of the ascension council and she believe in the Monarchy and how it worked he chose his regnal name, but he hadn't changed his own name so he was still Bertie regnal names are not part of a Monarch's title, his title was HIS MAJESTY, KING GEORGE VI
@@pedanticradiator1491 Quite right. I added that for those who may only remember him as the War time PM only. He was instrumental though for persuading Bertie to take George as his regnal name.
@@jennynasser1 first time I've heard of that I'm surprised Bertie would have taken Churchill's advice at the time as Churchill had supported Edward VIII during the abdication crisis
Kung George VI and the Royal Family could have gone to another country and leave their people but they stayed and fight with their people...the kings brothers and sister and daugther served in the military, even his counsins fought...he was listed as the last King who was actually in the battle during world war 1...historically, the Kings goes to war
I think that was in respect of the ordinary man in the street who was kept in the dark about his sovereign’s health. Just as we were a couple of years ago when we were not told the old Queen was dying from bone cancer! So, yes, the general public and the world did receive a shock & thought it all sudden.
I consider George VI far more handsome than his brother Edward. Also, despite his stammer, shyness, etc, he had the qualities of determination and persistence, despite setbacks. His wooing of Elizabeth was one example. The qualities were very important during the crisis of World War II. He continued to believe in an Allied victory no matter how things went, and he showed himself, in uniform, to the people, even if he couldn't make stirring speeches. He was an awesome king.
What a lovely kind king, didn’t know much of George the sixth, what a mess Britain was in he did a good job, even though, he really didn’t think he could being nervous and a quiet person. 👍👍
The Crown jewels are the best thing to be there for the future of the monarchy they were given to the monarchy by countries of the World 🌎🌍 who wanted to honor and show gratitude for the future of the rightious way forward and aid ehen needed help with living a great life 🙏🙏🙏
It was reported that both Australia and New Zealand's Prime Ministers were opposed to Edward marrying Wallis. This is false, l know that the New Zealand Prime Minister said he would support the King in whatever decision he made and the Australian Prime Minister said likewise

How is saying appeasement of Hitler valid, the visit concerned the known intention to go to war in 1938, and Hitler failed despite making Chamberlains task more difficult after the solution was won elsewhere. And of course the next time he intended war he again was confronted with a threat.
Much as I really enjoy hearing about the RF and their history, I find that opinionated Berk Larman and his speculation this series Unwatchable, I really wish he'd rather go elsewhere and speculate about drying Paint.
George was not a monster, this is what happen when these so called "royal experts" want to rewrite history. Read George V's biographies by several acclaimed historians such as Kenneth Rose, Jane Ridley, Alexandra Churchill. George was strict and disciplinary but he loved his children and wasnt a m 0nster
@glen7318 the rumor is that George V is to have stated that he was afraid of his father (Edward VII), and his children would be afraid of him. It's documented that he wasn't too nice to his children.
Queen Mary was not at fault here! David was interested in brash American women from a very early age or confident and assertive married women. He was never interested in the type of discreet and well bred girl who would have made a good Princess of Wales and later Queen Consort.
Well, Edward didn't like to do the things he was supposed to do, like attend hospital openings and charity events. He sent his brother Bertie and then went out to a social event with his friends while his brother covered for him. He let the red boxes, which contain private, secret government documents, lying about where anyone could get to them. He talked about government matters in social gatherings with perfect strangers. After the abdication, and in the middle of the possibility of war, he accepted an invitation to dinner with Adolph Hitler where he was filmed doing the Nazi salute. In a word, he was an utter security risk. The UK should erect a beautiful statue to Wallis Simpson in deepest gratitude for saving them from the disaster that was Edward VIII.
Terrified of her own son?!? Who was a mild mannered person?? And if you refered to her husband: they were very devoted to each other. There are several love letters known to the public that they exchanged throughout their marriage.

King George V (George VI's father) was really the first modern king, to be honest. He was the one who styled the monarchy after WWI when everything changed, particularly for the royal family. George VI continued this trend and did a great job.
