I would say the English suffered more under the Anarchy, before the Plantagenets arrived and took over. And England generally fared better during the Middle Ages than the French, whose country was constantly torn by war thanks to its feudal society. The Hundred Years War alone cost France up to half its population. And then there was the Plague. The Jacquerie. Constant intrigues and betrayals among the ruling class and the warfare that went with it.

@@ChalcedonXXX Ah! I am proud to say I am team Bastard the Conqueror in this fight. The Normans are way cooler than the Anglo-Saxons Imo and their (Romano-French inspired) culture, etiquette and institutions are superior Imo. Lastly, I think the continental (French/Latin) influence on the language should've been greater. Considering 1/3 of the Bastard's army (at Hastings) consisted of Bretons, his takeover of England was - as I see it - a process of undoing the Germanic culture that is the Anglo-Saxons from Britain and to bring it back along the lines the more traditional Romano-French (and to a small degree British/Briton) culture. The Normans were foreigners that greatly changed the land they conquered, but so were the Anglo-Saxons. Enough talk of 'how history would've been had Godwinson won'. No, I say history would've been more interesting if the Anglo-Saxons never conquered southern Britain and established England. Who knows, their could've emerged a united Celtic kingdom, and the language we speak today will be Celtc based, rather than Germanic.

Also people had baths in the middle ages, they washed! (Much more than say in the 17th century) We have so many clichés about the middle ages that are simply not true.

I think like many people Edward was a mixture of good and bad - he was a strong leader and just but a conquerer and attempted conquerer (not a trait we celebrate today and quite rightly hence his depiction by Mel Gibson who as a twice over former colonialist of the British Empire descended from Irish people also suppressed by the Brits. It's not dated well with some justification but viewed in context becomes more ambivalent. Gibson has also proved himself to be a misogynist, anti-Semitic, ultra Catholic fundamentalist dickhead - Edward was also extremely anti Semitic and would expel all Jewish people from England and didn't care if some were killed by unscrupulous people while being exciled so yup Mel you've more in common with your bete noir than you ever knew, some actual bloody historical research would have shown you that and maybe made you think, it's also more understandable as Europe in the middle ages wasn't exactly known for its tolerance - who even before his fall from grace was also known for previous alcholicism and a temper that rivalled Longshanks himself. We thought Mel had got better we were wrong). He was a good husband who loved his wife but a bad father. He loved justice but had a vicious temper (a fault common to many Plantageanets and their descendants the Tudors even Good Queen Bess, it's probably one of the reasons why there's a myth that they were descended from a demon that mascaraded as a beautiful woman - it's the same one that Christabelle's poem is about in the novel Possession) once struck a court servant so badly he was deafened and executed some people for still unknown reasons.

that poker story is a myth, and while i agree that Edward II made many wrong decisions ( he even admitted so at the end), do not agree that Edward I was the best, he left the country's treasury pretty empty with his constant wars, and his son actually inherited quite a few problems. Edward I was the military ideal and had a lot of close friends in the higher level lords as the leading men of the time were close in age to him, grew up with him and respected him. this helped a kind of unity, but that does not mean that they liked his policies especially taxation for war, all the time. And as for the Isabella and her lover, that is commonly claimed but not 100%, and she made that partnership only after through alienation from the king by his new companion Despenser, being deprived of all her lands and practical house arrest. She was not under house arrest by her son in later years, that happened under her husband and Despenser.

just executed, not quartered... I believe Roger Mortimer, her mother s partner got a bit too big for his britches and declared something like.l "Edward comes after me....". Roger started to see himself as the new King, and Edward was reaching the age of 17, adulthood, and he and his many young noble friends were not pleased . Roger Mortimer was a Marcher lord, one of the lords who governed Marcher lands, meaning those bordering Wales and all those lords were given freedom to rule their lands la lost as little kings, as long as they protected England from Welsh incursions He was a fascinating character and i have read biographies about both he and Isabella, Edward s mother, also a fascinating character...
