Too bad the world does not have more women like Queen Sofia. Juan Carlos wanted an "important, connected wife who ideally came from royalty and had money!!" He did his duty to produce an heir but after that I suspect he actually never found her attractive (neither do I) Depending on one's definition of suffering, she "suffered emotionally" IF she was genuinely in love with him but I don't think they were in love. As long as she had her status, supports and "comforts' she was better off married to this jerk than leaving him for a insecure life to which she wasn't used to and didn't want. There also weren't many suitors for her and as she aged, there would have been less. It is probable that Catholicism figured in so far as divorce is frowned upon. Juan was corrupt, greedy and egocentric. He shamed the Spanish monarchy and further, Sophia but, just like others, you made your choice and have to live with it.

So the husband was like a rabbit on steroids. King or peasant he is simply disrespectful to his wife and queen.
