Welcome to our first time watching King Kong (1933) then King Kong (2005).
This is Part 3 of 3 videos, where we watch the second half of King Kong 2005. Please check out Part 1 where we watch King Kong 1933, and Part 2 for King Kong 2005 first half, if you haven't already.
This was a movie Odyssey! We loved it and the revelations it gave us watching these back to back.
Whilst King Kong 1933 is outstanding and pure filmmaking, this modern version updates it in every way. More backstory, greater depth of characters and of course, the creatures. Written by Fran Walsh, Phillipa Boyens and Peter Jackson, starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody and directed by Peter Jackson.
Hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations. We are trying something new by doing the original and the remake back to back. We really enjoyed doing this as it felt, not just respectful to the original but we loved it for what it was in 1933. The 2005 version is outstanding, and once the momentum hits, it is pure class filmmaking. We enjoyed seeing the similarities and differences between the two. Not just homages, but subtle inclusions in the scripts and character that made the 2005 version so much more enjoyable. Such as the dialogue on the boat film scene, the grenades, the costumes. Most importantly, how King Kong himself is depicted from a beast in 1933 to a character with arc in 2005. Outstanding.

Thank you for watching and hope you are enjoying this trilogy of videos celebrating King Kong. We love the T-rex and King Kong fight in this, and the entire second half of the film just keeps going with exciting set pieces. The emotions of the characters are set-up and it just keeps coming. This is great example of modern filmmaking with integrating CGI and storytelling. Please stick around for our conclusion where we balance the 1933 and 2005 versions together in cinematic, sociological and humanistic points of view. We feel we only really got this view by watching them back to back.

Thank you so much for doing these reactions. Interestingly, you have not just covered an original classic with its modern remake - but you have span almost a whole century of great filmmaking as well. In so, you've made your reaction videos something other than just a reaction video IMO. Somewhere between Journalism and Art. Thank you and well done.

Kong is profoundly lonely, in this movie he is the last of his kind; I think this remake particularly captures this so beautifully.

To me the biggest difference and most significant difference between the 1933 movie and the 2005 movie is Carl's reaction when Kong starts getting angry. In the 1933 movie when the cameras start flashing when Ann and Jack are on the stage, Kong starts roaring and Carl says "hey wait a minute, wait a minute, stop! He thinks you're attacking the girl!" Here in the 2005 movie Kong starts roaring because he's angry about the fake Ann and the cameras flashing are too bright, and Carl just says what the reporters said in the 1933 movie "let him roar, it makes a swell picture." In the original he almost understood. Here he just doesn't.

The 6-minute, 50-second mark is really the essence of this reaction. "Kong can't fight two... Three??!"

47:15 Apparently originally they were going to have Fay Wray in the crowd, come forward look at Kong and say those lines. Fay Wray being Ann in the original 1933 movie. She actually met with Naomi Watts at some point. But she died before filming could start. I think it'd work if they had her in the audience in the theatre, focus on her seeing Kong first, and we the audience see something in her face that tells us she understands. Also would be the ultimate test for fans of the original movie - who recognised her, 72 years older.

You guys really got into this one!!!!😁 I was fortunate enough to see the Hollywood premiere and sat right in front of Ray Bradbury! When this film finished, my friend turned to me and said it might as well have said, "Directed by Superman". Yeah. That was one WILD RIDE to see it on the big screen with massive soundsystems. I miss those days man.

I think it was a great idea to show your son the classic film alongside the modern take. It was also great that you explained to him the very questionable cultural aspects of that classic film, and how times have changed (for the better, imo). He'll appreciate that even more in years' time. One original/remake duo you can do (if you haven't seen them already) are Superman: The Movie (1978) and Man of Steel (2013), especially since there's a new Superman movie coming next year. And if your son hasn't seen it already, you guys could maybe react to The Wizard of Oz (1939), alongside a semi-sequel called Return to Oz (1985).

I believe the "1976" version of King Kong (set in the 70s) is the best version, the story is slightly diffrent and much better paced. I would love to see your reaction to the diffrences..

I finally got time to finish your trilogy of reviews. 😊 I was waiting to see how dad reacted to all the creepy crawlies, as I knew you aren't fond of spiders and the like. 😂 About the emotional part, it is interesting that the audience is made to root for Kong when the planes attack. From the perspective of the pilots, they are trying to protect the city from a beast they know has went on a rampage, and not having seen or had a chance to connect with Kong as we viewers have, Kong is simply considered a threat that must be stopped. The idea of making Kong more sympathetic actually began with the 1976 version. Famously, producer Dino De Larentiis proudly proclaimed in an interview: "No one cry when Jaws die but when the monkey die, people gonna cry. Intellectuals gonna love Kong. Even film buffs who love the first Kong gonna love ours. Why? Because I no give them crap." That 1976 film is the first film I can recall seeing in the theater as a child. It's certainly a nostalgic film for me. The critics did ravage it, and it still has its detractors, but as evidenced by many in the comments to your review, a number of us do have affection for it. I honestly don't know if your son would enjoy it more than the 2005 film version, as for younger folk there isn't as much spectacle, but I still think you both might get something from watching it. Your reviews are always fun to watch. I must confess that dad's reactions to more unsettling scenes are often hilarious, and for emotional scenes you display great empathy with your expressions. Your son really didn't care for the scene with Kong ripping open the T-Rex's jaws. It was intense. It is very evident that hevis also very empathetic as his father and a sensitive soul. I look forward to your next review!

Thank you for watching them. The reason we didn’t do the 1976 version is because the two we did are both set in 1933, so felt there was more similarities and differences to discuss. I’m impressed the 1976 version has such good backing. We may watch it, but perhaps privately as it takes a couple of days to edit an hours video for RU-vid. And these three let me feeling ‘konged’ out for a while. I understand it’s a lot to watch, and perhaps next time we will upload them with a couple of days in between. Thank you for the positive comment, we enjoy doing the reactions, but the editing is a slog, comments like this give us the energy to carry on.

30:42 Definitely a good directing choice in the original that the 2005 Carl Denham missed out on - not having the "hero" of the story wearing a pith helmet and doing the Charleston with one of the "native" women. Sadly the 2005 Carl Denham doesn't know when he's being tacky.

Overall, I like both the 1833 original and the 2005 versions for what they bring. My favorite is the 1933 original. It was groundbreaking for its day. The age of the original makes it easier for me to overlook the faults. The 2005 movie looked great but wasn't groundbreaking. I'm not much of a fan for the 1976 version. I do have criticism for every version. I don't feel the need to humanize a unique animal to feel empathy for it. I think both the 1976 & 2005 version pushed far too hard on humanizing Kong in effort to milk that empathy. For me, I felt great empathy for 1933 Kong as it was presented. It was forcefully taken from its natural home and then destroyed - just for being a misplaced animal. All because of human greed. I don't care for the "military is bad" message of the modern take. I think people should be proud of those who serve in the military to protect lives. Put the blame of "bad" where it belongs - on bad decision makers. I'm also not a fan of the deep bond between Ann Darrow & Kong. Both the 1976 and the 2005 versions have that deep Ann / Kong bonding. Having Ann stay afraid of Kong is a much more realistic behavior to me than seeing her risk life and limb for Kong.

I've watched all 3 Generation Media Reaction King Kong videos, this is so interesting. I didn't think the son would remember so many details from the 1933 black and white version, but he was obviously very into it. At the beginning of this video, he recalled all of the differences from the 1933 version and the 2005 version halfway point. BTW: The insect pit part was originally intended to be in the 1933 version, but was edited out. There is photo evidence on the internet.

12:52 Not his mate. The closest thing he has to a father. Half of Jamie Bell's characters have father issues - he said so himself. I think his own dad walked out on him and his family when he was a baby, but I'm not sure so don't quote me on that. I've also heard the Peter Jackson wrote the role of 'Jimmy' with Jamie Bell in mind.

Peter Jackson did a fantastic job in recreating Kongs world, as well as getting Denham to be a world class ASS. I don't think they could have pulled off Anne being a weak damsel in distress like the 1933 character. They needed a strong, independent female for this movie. This WAS Beauty & the Beast story. If you plan to watch the 1976 movie, just know that this was Jessica Lang's Debut movie, and it nearly ruined her film career.

Well, I enjoyed the watch-along. Obviously, the story and character development is better in the remake and the motion-capture Kong, but I find the middle section a bit overblown. They nailed the pathos in the ending, though. It just feels half an hour too long. Ultimately, I prefer the 33 version.

Thank you for watching them. I think it’s a classic generational thing. The boy liked the 2005 version and I can see why. I love the 1933 version and hold Peter Jackson in high regard with this one. Either way, it’s fun to see them both together. I agree with you, it’s very long and since the second half runs so fast, they could have sped up the first act in my opinion

Original was far more violent and Kong is no gentleman. Jackson pays tribute in many ways, but for some reason feels he needs to overdo everything. Not chased by a single apatjasaurse as in the original, but a stampede, not challangteed by a single T Rex, but three in free fall.. I could not see Jack Black as Carl Denham. whom he makes the bad guy. The brute violence of the original was breathtaking and powerful both, on the Island and in New York. Jackson has Kong as the protagonist, The original achieved a similar feeling for Kong with less sentimentality.

Thank you for commenting. This is what's interesting in viewing them back to back in this way. The differences between the versions because clear. I would say with the 2005 version, that it's too long and i suspect there were many studio execs interfering
