Hands down, Heliotrope is one of the most fragrant annuals you will find. Add in bright purple blooms and dark green foliage, this is a must have plant. Learn about the care, pruning and how to winter this over to enjoy for multiple seasons.

Hey, thank you! For some reason I thought Heliotrope was hard to grow. Now I know, and I will definitely buy some in the spring.

I bought one last year, I live near Charleston, SC. I had it in a pot left it out all winter. Around February to March it was looking very stickish. So I cut it all the to the soil. When temperatures started to rise. She was sprouting new limbs.

Does anyone grow these in hot very humid climates? I have such a difficult time with them. No matter how I water them, the leaves slowly blacken or become rusty looking and the plants weaken and die. I have tried keeping the foliage dry, misting, keeping them moist, keeping them wet, allowing the soil to dry before watering thoroughly, allowing it to dry just slightly and then watering lightly, and all different kinds of light exposure... nothing works! I generally have a very green thumb so its just so perplexing. I absolutely love the fragrance however so every year in the spring, I optimistically buy several plants of various sizes and struggle to get them to grow, but they all slowly die. My longest lived plant, I actually keept indoors instead of outside like the rest. It survived a full month before completely dieing, unlike all the rest however it actually put on a lot of growth before the old leaves blackend to a crisp and new leaves became mildewy. I have noticed these plants also blacken here on all the vendors within a few weeks when they don't sell right away and I never see them successfully growing in containers or annual beds anywhere here so maybe it's the hot humid summer climate of NYC?

We also have 1 acre of land in middle of this industry and am looking for such best solutions where smell dominates ..say scented plants should be an solution.. etc.. Am looking for suggestions which should address below points A) these plants should grow in South Indian humidity environment (black soil) B) to smell throughout the year especially rainy seasons C) IF possiable should be low maintenance and insect prepalier Any quick response would very much be appreciated and many thanks in adv...Harry
