King of New York 30th Anniversary Video Essay
This video looks back at Abel Ferrara’s existential gangster classic “King of New York” starring the ever magnetic Christopher Walked as Frank White.
Ferrara delivers a very stylish movie brimming with detail but underneath it’s glossy surface is a signature tales of darkness which explores the cost of power, the value of time wasted and one of Ferrara’s favourite themes - the search for redemption. I also take a small detour and look at the films lasting legacy and influence on cinema and music as well. Long live the King. Let me know what you think in the comments.

It does get better with age. It’s full of great memorable moments but over time I’ve realised what a unique and original film it is. Frank White is such an intriguing character and the atmosphere in this movie makes it stand out from other gangster movies. Thanks for your comment.
@Rekaert
@Rekaert 2 года назад
One of many aspects I always liked about this film, is Frank's fatalism. He comes across as a guy who knows he's either going to be dead or back in prison after a year or two, and just wants to make that one in a million shot at doing something better. In many ways he's a tragic anti-hero. He murders, breaks laws, kills cops, but at the same time wants to have a positive impact by improving city infrastructure and eradicating human trafficking and child prostitution. He comes across not as a hero, but as a lesser evil than the criminals he kills. As an audience, it's easy to be conflicted. He has some laudable goals, but his methods are contemptible. At the same time, the cops chasing him seem almost as bad as he is, but with the protection of a badge. Better film than many give it credit.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment, really good summary of the theme and character. Frank’s journey is an interesting mix of redemption and revenge which is essentially the source of the conflict not only in the story but for the audience as they try to take a position on the morality in the story.

He also stares into the camera just for a moment after getting roughed up by the detectives for the first time, after the Broadway show when they basically kidnap him, and show him the dead Columbian in the trunk. Christopher Walken is from.nyc evidently he knew the streets ,but real life Italians were running show during them times..a person like frank white is a fictional character that was brought to life like Spiderman superman batman etc....
@MovieBirthdays

I think that’s what makes this movie stand out and has made Frank White iconic. It’s like a gangster myth that ends in tragedy.

I've listened to Biggie's music for years but never realised what the inspiration behind the 'Frank White' moniker was. Also, the name Christopher Walken is nearly the same as Christopher Wallace, Biggie's government name. Good review by the way.

Funny coincidence, but yes this influenced a lot of hip hop. The references to Frank White were everywhere.

REDEMPTION!? Wtf lol nothing in this movie even suggested there is redemption.. hell nothing even suggested frank felt he got redemption.. he just got done murdering another cop and then had no problem blowing away lady in the subway lol I think the end suggested he accepted defeat, his “oh well fuck it” moment.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 3 года назад
Lol. That’s another way of looking at it. Clearly he’s just doing whatever it takes to stay on top, I’m just suggesting another way of seeing the movie.

Good movie, but the shooting scenes are laughable. No recoil, endless bullets, and of course no one can't aim properly.....everyone just spray and pray unless someone gets hit and die.
