Birds-of-Paradise sport some of the strangest feathers in the bird world. The male King-of-Saxony takes the cake with stiff ornamental feathers (up to twice the male's body length) sprouting from the top of his head. He also has a piercing call that sounds anything but bird-like. Filmed by Tim Laman near Tari Gap in November of 2010.

That was an intense amount of sounds from such a tiny little bird. Plus it's feathers are pretty impressive

No, those aren't antennae getting reception (although good idea), those are eyebrow feathers which they can move to impress females. Someone asked about their mouths being colored. Many Birds of Paradise have yellow or green inside their mouths as part of their display to females. The appearance of the various Birds of Paradise are driven by female selection.

the stunning elongated feathers off the males head and the call which gives the revelry to the sound of some sort of lazar is quite amazing, this is by far one of my favourite birds in the bird world.

I have often told fashion designers that i know to follow the color combination of bird's feathers (especially the birds of paradise) when designing; just follow what natures have arranged for you! Don't have to lose sleep over it.

Those long antenna type features could be used to tune there range of frequency as a tool for better communication or at at least signal function. These extra ordinary features are extraordinary for sure but to discern there function can be even tougher. The Mechanics of nature are absolutely mind boggling. Your guys research is much appreciated!

At first, I saw an image only of this bird and thought that it was pretty cool....But the movement of those long feathers on its head reminds me too much of cockroach antennas. O_O
