It's another KOTH and we're getting Peaty! With our release of Kilhoman, we thought it would be great to pair it with a traditional peaty expression we all come to love from Ardbeg and Laphroaig. We know Mr. Wheelhouse will be all about this, but what about the other dummies. Can we put away our bias towards the distillery and pick a winner? Let's find out!

Men after my own heart with the Kilchoman! Such a good marriage of speyside vanillas with the campfire of islay. The Loch Gorm is exquisite. I've always found the younger Ardbegs to be more campfire-esque than medicinal, with younger Laohroaigs going the opposite direction. Excellent show!

Maybe when side by side the Laphroaig comes across more refined, I've always felt that it was a pretty refined whisky and my favorite of the 2. Talisker 10 is my favorite by far so I totally agree with that list.

It's interesting. I did the same blind along with you guys (on replay). Full disclosure I am Cult of Ardbeg all the way. Have 12 different bottles, many committee releases, etc. I could tell the difference right away as well. I was surprised to find that I enjoyed the nose on the laphroiag better tonight. Palatewise I ended up picking the ardbeg, but I cleared away my biases as best I could and really dove deep again into bottles I hadn't explored in awhile. In the end, the Laph ended up having kind of an acrid finish to me, and I just love that salty barbecue pork too much, but it was closer than I anticipated for sure. Thanks for doing this guys!

I cant say for certain but would be very surprised if any Laphroaig currently goes into blends.

I would choose Ardbeg 10 over the Laphroaig 10 but do enjoy both. I like the added ABV of the Ardbeg as well as a bit less of an in your face hit of Laphroaig. As others have said, it really just depends what you are in the mood for. Both are affordable here in Florida ($59 for the Ardbeg and $65 for the Laphroaig). Both of them “should be” at $55 or lower but that’s not going to happen. I like the entire Ardbeg lineup (yes, even the Wee Beastie). As for Laphroaig, I really like the 10 and the Quarter Cask. Good showdown. Thanks.

Recently had several drams of Ardbeg 10 on a cruise. I wanted Laphroig but they didn't have any. It was my first taste of Ardbeg, and I was so impressed I bought 2 bottles on the way home. But back home the Ardbeg was a lot harsher and the sweet complexity I liked so much on the boat was absent. What was the difference? My best guess is the Ardbeg on the boat came from bottles that had been opened weeks or even months before, and had more exposure to oxygen in the bottles. Is been a couple of weeks and I'm about a third of the bottle down. I'm going to let it sit for a while and see if the magic comes back.

Not only are they only 2 miles apart, but Lagavulin is in the middle. Proper staggering distance!

Great review. Do Drew and Andrew suspect the result would have been different if the Laphroaig was at 40% abv, as it is here in the UK?

Possibly...but we did add water to both and I don't think it did much to the flavors. It was a lot harder than I thought to be honest. I just felt that Laphroaig just had the edge tonight. I'm usually an Ardbeg fan so this was very surprising to me.

Why not go with some Campbeltown Funk? Longrow Peated vs. Glen Scotia Double Cask.

AGREE. Ardbeg is very medicinal tasting to me. Laphroaig is smoother and has better flavor layering.

Don’t even need to waste an hour watching this, obviously Ardbeg wins.

Simplified, which smells better, which tastes better? That's the winner. Then break down why you feel that way. Like it was said, everyone likes both but it also depends on the mood your currently in. Monday you prefer Ardbeg but Wednesday your in the mood for Laphroaig. It's tough when you know what bottles you are judging. Subconsciously it's in your head

Edradour Caledonia 12 would take out Glendronach 12. It's kind of a miss match because the Edradour is not available on every shelf, you have to do a little searching.

Hey guys, spend some time checking out the production quality of what’s going on with other channels. Drinking buds are a waste of limited time. Not available to take rambling time waiting for your takes. Blah blah blah. Just review.
