King of the S-Class - Mercedes-Benz W140 

My dad had an s600 v12 in the late 90’s up until 2005 and it was my absolute favourite car as a child. Those long journeys is the back seat were the smoothest ever

The W140 is a timeless classic, seriously, it's the sexiest Mercedes-Benz I've ever seen.

I still own a 1998 C140 CL600, fully loaded and still an amazing drive today.

I have a 97 s320 w140 chassis and I love it. It's my first mercedes and I don't think I could have picked a better model. the car currently has 275k miles and no major mechanical issues to speak of, it runs strong and smooth.

it's hard to argue with the w140, but the w126 is a very close second in my opinion.

All Mercedes look the exact same now. And they threw the amg badge on damn near every model. It's like it's not even special anymore.

My dad’s eldest brother still has a S600 still parked in the garage in London. The first person in our family to own a Mercedes Benz. The second is my dad who owns a ‘07 C 180 kompressor sports edition.

I had a W140 when it was ten years old with 200,000 miles on the clock and put another 100,000 miles on it with pretty minimal cost. Got a same year low mileage Jag XJ after that and everything went wrong. W140 is The Daddy

You may not love Mercedes - Benz, but you will definately love the W140.

I have a W221 S550 with AMG sport package but I will always love the W140. Still see them on the road here and I always wave at the other Mercedes driver.

W126 has a calm elegance that just don't appear in all this over complicated modern designs. W140 comes close. But all other designs ever since couldn't capture that essence. They were good cars with all kinds of technology but the presence of 126 and 140 is something different.

I couldn’t agree with more, that classic car, was and still so tough on roads, even though if you drive through out the puddle holes as well speed bums, the cars has a very strong good quality of resistance.

I knew of this car from reading Car and Driver magazine in 1997. And from one article i could tell it was one of the best cars in the world. I was always impressed by how heavy they were. I equated that mass to safety.

I owned a 400se and it had the best ride of any car I have ever owned...

I had a "92 600 SEL. I'm a collector and have driven many great cars. To this day, at least for me, it's the best vehicle I have ever driven. It's like driving a Swiss bank vault.

I like the new S Class Benzes but the W140 has always been my all time favorite so ahead of its time.

I have my 2000 c230 running like its new with over 20000 miles on it run fast and it still looks like the new model out here in 2020

Today, I started an old 97 S420 that I was given. It sat under trees for over 3 years while I waited for the former owner, who gave it to me, to get a clear title on it. It's been horribly neglected, not maintained at all, is rough on the outside, was filthy as a pig sty on the inside, and is just a generally shabby looking car. It's really not worth restoring, so I'm going to sell it as basically a running parts car. I washed it and took it out for a spin around the neighborhood, and was reminded what great cars these things are. It still runs and drives beautifully, and even in its present condition, it's a better car than 95% of what's being made today. And honestly, I would have no qualms about putting a tag on that car and driving it out of state. Even it its present condition, it's that good a car. The guy who made this video is absolutely right. The W-140 Mercedes exudes solidity and quality. They're like rolling around in a bank vault. And having worked on them, I can attest to the fact that although they are complicated, they are also ridiculously over-engineered, making them durable and reliable in a way that no similar BMW 7-series or later S-Classes even come close to.

I just picked one up running and driving as I drove it 45 min home for under a grand, it does need some things but I think it's a beautiful car ever since I was a kid and now I'm excited to own one as the 3rd owner

The W140 was the last of the Old School Mercs that will be future classics tommorow.

Great video! the w140 first generation 1992 500sel was my first mercedes,was my dream car, top luxury, fast! ...then defective engine wire harness causing 100000 electronic problems, close pump assistence failure x2, transmission literally lost the reverse clutch B3 defective, powers sterring pump failure. was i give the best of the maintenance, pampered the car like a baby the amaizing is the car still run and never give up. My 1974 240D is slow and noise car, but in 10yr was only 1 failure and it was a clogged fuel filter.

I had a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600SEL. Absolutely amazing car, still the best car I have ever owned. What an engineering marvel (just watch out for the bio-degradable wiring harness that was originally installed on these early models!).

I have a ‘92 500SEL. The most luxurious and comfortable car I’ve ever owned or driven. Costs a fortune to maintain, but WORTH IT!

I miss this car, my granddad had a SEL300 and damn... 1990's it had things cars today don't have. Ever heard of a car with the inside mirror being electronically set like the exterior mirrors? It was a 6 cylinder and what a beast... Everything on this car is great... Really hard to get a good used one

The best S Class of them all. They built those things to last. Such an amazing technological feat as well - parking sensors, double glazing, etc. Those things run an run. The W220 whilst probably is better to drive - they're terrible when it comes to build quality and their electrics - I've heard so many horror stories. They have big rust problems as well.

Nice video. However, I think most people would agree that the predecessor W126 is a better buy than the W140 as it is simpler and far less expensive to repair than the W140 and it's looks are much more classic and less bloated than the W140. I also think the quality is at least on par with the W140.

Saccos last car was not the R230, but the C215 in 1999 - then he retired. The R230 was a project of Peter Pfeifer.

I own a W202 C230 Kompressor (C-Class), The mini-cheap W140! It is a nice car!

s class is the best car of its kind on earth, and the w140 is the best s-class among any other s-class... so you can figure out how awesome this w140 s class

They're still very much in use by some monarchs and consulates,especially in the middle east. Timeless I must say.

The w140 is the car that you buy, and then you start to pass it generations, and its still relialble if you take good care.As a w124 e-class owner, thosse cars are just made to be on the road.You can have a cigar and a whiskey while going somewhere in the back seet, and you feel like in a bar. And this is a 1994 car in 2019 :D

The W140 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is my favorite S-Class. The styling is timeless unlike the W220 and W221 or even worse the S-Class from the 1980s.

4:45 Great video! Bruno Sacco did NOT design this car - it was a designer working under him who was 6'2" tall. Don't believe me, do your own research. That is why it is as tall as it is. The increased height meant they also had to make it slightly longer and wider to balance out the overall proportions. I heard it from an interview with an engineer at Mercedes-Benz who worked there during that era. Also, Mercedes-Benz studied human growth patterns worldwide due to advances in nutrition and health care, and they found that the average adult human was 7% larger than when the W126 was introduced.
