I OWN NOTHING!!! A behind the scenes look at the song Snuff Out the Light from King of the Sun, later turned into Emperor's New Groove. Features recording sessions and test animation.
For those who are asking, they cut the song because the context is no longer relevant to the plot. The lyrics says that Yzma is obsessed with looking young and is taking it out on the sun. Her plan was to block the sun to regain her looks. But since the film changed hands so much, the plot changed dramatically and Yzma's motive changed from looks-obsessive to power-obsessive.
Better goal for a villain, in my opinion, but I would've really loved to see Kingdom of sun. Maybe making her obscure the sun for other reasons power related. I would love if they made a prewuel of The emperors new grooves, where Kuzco is young and his parents rule and she gets to sing this song. I want it so badly.
The new backstory was better. And the new Yzma doesn’t care about looks, she gets any guy she wants and according to Cuzco she changes her partners for younger ones on a regular basis. Also Yzma raised Cuzco, and she was actually his main councilor, so she had good managerial skills. What she didn’t have was recognition.
While I really liked the final movie, I am actually a bit bummed that we never got to see this version. Though it is basically impossible now to do the story without Eartha Kitt, wouldn't it be great if the animation for this song was fully finished as just a music video? It is just so darn catchy and I would love to see those pencil works all finished.
Agreed--I can understand why they scrapped the film as a whole, but man, can we just have this one song animated? Maybe for a 20th anniversary Blu-Ray in a few years?
I've given up on the studio ever doing it, but wouldn't it be great if some fantastic fan animator took a swing at this? Sorta like how they animated the Scar song.
The things we could have had... This is some "Friends on the other side stuff" but 10 times more fun!. The visuals are so amazing that they beg to be finished...*sigh* but that won't happen will it all we will have is this song. It's such a shame that the animators were never given a chance to finish this, they must have worked extremely hard and treated it like every part of the film and Emperor's New Groove.
Yzma is way cooler than Dr. Facilier, even though I really like him as a villain. But she's.. so catty! I love it! And you can tell she used to be a sexy AND talented lady.
I love Disney (animation) but how the hell could they reject this and release garbage like Chicken Little? You were gifted possibly the greatest Disney film ever and you throw all of it out
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 because they were desperate against Dreamworks and Pixar. Simply put , they didn't had a real competition for so long , that they turn into conformists and slow , so they tried their shot in all sort of 3D Animation movies , until one sticks , while disregarded 2D animation.
AHHHHH the animations when she says "Every wrinkle soon be gone..." and "Murder, Treachery, and lying..." ahh I would kill for those parts to be fully fleshed out because it looks sOOOOO GOOD
This movie exists. There are chunks still stuck in storyboard. There are chunks fully animated. And there are bits fully colored. This is something Disney should finish, to test the waters on bringing traditional animation back every few years.
+Kyle Uy than make it a sequel. Who cares? though I suppose it would still be impossible. Eartha Kitt has had a bad case of being dead for a few years.
well, all the animation for this sequence actually was finished, it just wasn't released. so there is the possibility that it could be released one day
Me: At least give us the scene with Snuff Out The Light, Disney!! Disney: It would be too traumatizing for children... Me: Real life and anime will already do that!
Me: "Give us a completely finished and animated Snuff Out The Light." Disney: "It'll be too traumatizing for kids." Me: "You guys have Hellfire, a song about a man confessing his obsessive lust for a gypsy and that if he can't have her then the fires of Hell will. You have a crazy woman sending a little girl in a cave to fetch a million dollar diamond and is willing to let her drown. A poacher that was gonna murder a little boy and feed him to crocodiles. A youth obsessed woman who manipulated a girl for 18 years into believing that she was her real mother and that the outside world is a dark scary place. The Headless Horseman. I could go on, but do you honestly think THIS is the thing that will traumatize kids when you've put all this other stuff and more out already?" Disney: "...........................um....look Thanos just snapped his fingers and whipped out half the universe!" Me: 🤨
I wish Disney would just, release the full pencil tests for this song combined with whatever was finished for it. I've been dying to see the full music video for this song, no matter how unfinished it is. The animators did, from what we can see, such good work for this song's animation. Call it wishful thinking, but maybe, just maybe, they'll release it on Disney+ or something.
For some reason I see kingdom of the sun more like a DreamWorks film when 2D animation for DreamWorks was still alive. You know like prince of Egypt spirit road to El Dorado etc Disney tried to make kingdom of the sun like a DreamWorks film with all the colors and song it feels like that something road to El Dorado would do
I'm mixed on whether or not they should've done this concept since as interesting as it was, I frickin' LOVE the movie we got. However, there's no argument that for a DVD/Blu-ray release they should've finished animating this sequence at least. If we can get "Morning report" seamlessly put into the Lion King, I don't see why not
Scott Gerrard No, I don't mean putting it IN the movie, but as an extra in a deleted scenes section. The Lion King was just an example of how they're able to recreate a new scene a lost scene.
If not in the sequel, then surely this song could have been featured in an episode of the TV series. Yzma's plan one day is to snuff out the sun, we don't even need an explanation for the reason she's singing it. It's truly an awful waste of so much talent that the song never saw the light of day, ironically.
At least she got to sing a few songs in the series. Even won an award for it. What I love about the Emperor's New Groove is that it was so opposite to everything else the "Disney Renaissance" was doing that it became its own little corner of genius. Without Eartha Kitt's Yzma and Patrick Warburton's Kronk, it wouldn't have been nearly as great... but as is, it's a true classic in my mind.
Wow! Just wow! Yzma had a song, the look, the powers, and the potential to be one of the Disney villains, alongside Scar, Dr. Facilier, and then some. And the producers apparently had a good time with this song.
Shame this was never finished... even if the original movie was never completed, I would have loved to see this song finished in animation, it could have been the high light of the movie.
Wha a Shame we never got Kingdom of the Sun finished, this song truly captured the essence of Peruvian Salsa (the country where the Incas are from, and also my country of origin). At least Emperor's New Groove was a great movie.
This is one of my favorite villain "I want" songs ever, and the fact that Eartha Kitt sang it makes it that much better. Hopefully we'll get a fully animated version of this in a future re-release of "Emperor's New Groove".
If there is one thing I would want to see fully finished from the original version of this movie, it is this song. Hell, even a full animatic would be fantastic
...wow...that was exactly what I thought the video for this would be. No seriously, I listened to this song, plotted the video that would go with it in my head, and the parts they showed lined up almost exactly... ...
kingdom of the sun would've been something beautiful if disney hadn't scrapped it and i love the empoerers new groove, but i wish now knowing about kingdom of the sun. i wish i'd seen that instead.
@@EllRiver no , it's not about quality. They literally scrapped because they wanted to tune down to be kid-friendly , so one of the co-directors , you know , one of those that made Lion King , quit and was replaced by one more akin to corporates back then.
Man, i have a theory that they have a full storyboard and had that song (at least almost) fully roughly animated because when you see this man alone at the room with a tv on his side you can, also see animated parts of the song as it's playing in the documentary Pls I hope someday they release it fully bc this is an awesome son and it really deserves to be appreciated with animation
This song is too good, Eartha's Yzma and her singing in general is just amazing to hear. And the animation looked good in the animatics too. If they ever do a short for Disney movies, this song would be great! Love you Eartha!!
Got done watching the full documentary, and I must say, this definatly deserves a release as a bonus feature on a re-release of the Emperors New Groove just like the almost 2 hour long Lilo and Stitch documentary. Or why not have the entire original draft as a watchable bonus feature that was shown to the chairmen of animation at the time.
It would be interesting to see how Kingdom of the Sun would have turned out (NOT TO MENTION YZMAS MUSICAL NUMBER IS SO COOL) but I am glad that we have Emperors new groove (i still say they could do it but ANYWAYS STILL GREAT MOVIES)
Idk, some of the clips from the end of the song were in full color and looked finished or at least close, there’s probably a complete or almost complete version that Disney just never released.
It is a SIN that this song was cut, and barely got a proper release. The team seemed really excited about it, and when the plot was changed they didn't even write a new song for Eartha. This could have gone down in the books as one of Disney's best villain songs! Disney, when Eartha Kitt records a song for you, YOU FUCKING USE IT.
Kingdom of the sun would have been such an awesome film. this version of Yzma not only looks more menacing, but like a woman who might've actually been pretty in his younger years...
So tempted to carefully research character designs, art style, animation style, and tone of this movie (Kindom of The Sun) just to make an animated music video.
I want Disney to explore this again but Eartha Kitt has already passed away so no one could make her voice again (unless they found a super good understudy like Avatar did to Iroh/Mako/Greg). If they continued on though, I think this is a prequel idea. Imagine Kuzco’s father is the one she has to “snuff out” to get the beauty she wants back. Like the plot revolves around the antagonist who tries all sorts of magic to get beautiful again. She tries to kill the emperor (Kuzco’s Dad) as he is the “sun incarnate” and whom she believes the cause of her uglification. Kuzco’s Dad finds this out and Moseses himself out of the kingdom in search of ways to defeat Yzma. Then Yzma finds out and sends out her first apprentice (before Kronk) who is much scarier and actually more evil than Kronk. Kuzco’s Dad probably gets help from Pacha (though much younger and probably single) under the disguise of a peasant. The two goes to an adventure and eventually Kuzco’s Dad meets his Mom and falls in love. Pacha stays in his village to stall time for Kuzco’s Dad but Yzma alerts her pursuing apprentice of Kuzco’s parents’ location. They meet an old wise lady who foretells their future, albeit vaguely. She says: the sun will leave a ray on earth before it descends to darkness. He doesn’t know what it means but he goes back to the kingdom to face Yzma and hopefully think of a way to reason with her. Yzma times the ritual to kill the Emperor to an eclipse. Kuzco’s mom arrives just in time to put faith back in the Emperor’s heart and decides to fight together against Yzma. Yzma gets caught by the council (or whatever elders shit they have in the kingdom) and sentences her to death. She feigns surrender and when the Emperor is in the clear, her apprentice shoots the emperor with a poisoned arrow. The Emperor succumbs to his wound and tells his lover to keep the baby, which implies Kuzco being conceived at that point. Yzma realizes he is dead and her plan was all wrong. But she pulls this chance to tell everyone that the apprentice put her under a fucking trance and blames him for the actions against the Emperor. The council decides Yzma to stay and imprison the apprentice. With the empty throne, Yzma volunteers to be the Empress but Kuzco’s mom interjects and tells people she is with child. Kuzco is born but Yzma is in the shadows, lurking and waiting for her throne. She eventually kicks out the Empress Dowager before Kuzco even has consciousness. From then on, Kuzco is kept under Yzma’s wing and given the sob story that his parents died of an accident. The end. Again, I have not watched the TV series accompanying Emperor’s New Groove.
This would had been a thousand times better than Princess and the Frog. That movie was terrible. Good voices but bad songs. Bad story and setting for a fairy tale.
LighteningXT9 Jeeze! I'm no fan of "Princess and the Frog" either but you can't just go around saying that a failed concept of a movie would have been better than a finished Disney product.
LighteningXT9 We'll never know what "Kingdom of the Sun" would have been like because Disney will never make it. The best we could hope for is that someone gets a hold of the animatic with some completed animation that was shown to test audiences, but Disney has a strong vault. Compare that to "Princess and the Frog," which can be seen as a finished film and we have critical and audience consensus on. I don't agree with a lot of that consensus, but it's there. By the way, I don't think the setting of a story has anything to do with the genre. True, it can be more challenging to tell a 1920s New Orleans fairytale than a kingdom far, far away, but you can play with genres all you want. Case in point: "Lilo and Stitch" is the "kid and the pet" story in Hawaii and add some aliens. It works great!
I remember being a teen and my mom randomly buying this DVD for my little siblings. We all ended up watching it together and simply had a riot. It's one of my favorite memories. Didn't expect a protagonist like Kuzco nor a villain like Yzma. Kronk was also a standout and I can still hear Wendy Malick's voice. Eartha Kitt and the entire cast outdid themselves with their performances here.
The part near the end, at 1:47 , I personally like it better without all the backup vocals, because you get to hear her, while in the studio version that's also in the soundtrack, the backup vocals pretty much overshadow her
I love this song and I would love to see this movie to be fully animated and Kingdom of the Sun sounds like a great film and I love the title it sounds cool.
I love emperor's new groove, but GOD the movie we could have had just for this version of eyzma!! Eartha kitts incredible acting would have just blown us away, especially with the singing!! I think kingdom of the sun was changed because the primary plot wasn't turning out, but GOD this would have been the highlight!! I demand a collection of what work they had done to be released as a collectors item. People would pay, Disney!!! Come on!! Please!! 😭 Who do I have to write!?
I loved Eartha Kitt. She's an amazing actress and voice too. And this movie is really underrated, but it's amazing movie with the voice of Eartha Kitt.
Disney, you cockteases! At least put this in full animation and color to honor Eartha's memory. I'm sure she would've wanted that. ~RIP Eartha Kitt~ a great talent gone much too soon. :'(
Yuma looks so freakin' cool in this version. I like both this version and the Emperor's new groove cause its funny. But, I'm pretty sure King of the Sun would be super dark and more for adults.
I told myself this years ago when i first saw this, so i’ll type it now for records sake. IF i ever learn how to do animation and get good at it, i will animate this whole song. That is a promise
@That Man .Over There Oh my god, me too! It depresses me that Eartha Kitt is no longer with us. Had they kept this in the film the film would have gotten even higher reviews! Such a great villain song. It's like Disney cutting out Facilier's Friends on the Other Side song. Can you imagine that? Villain songs are the best songs! This should have been kept.
It's like The Lion King without "Be Prepared" The Hunckback of Notre Dame without "Hellfire", The Great Mouse Detective without "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind".
Daniella Dahoui Me too! Gosh, I ship the heck out of Yzma and Facilier (actually, it's Yzma/Facilier/Tzekel-kan, but they are still a must). I was just burning with fangirling energy when I saw the video. I was like "Yzcilier, Yzcilier". That's what I was thinking too, and as I think that Facilier/Yzma is THE Fanmade disney couple, this video just hyped me up! Wow! Supershipping mode ON!
Ive always been at a complex middle of the road type situation, I love the emperors new groove but I also really wanted to see kingdom of the sun, but obviosly you cant have both.
This would be Amazing if they added it on KHIII with Eartha's recorded vocals It would be an awesome alternative universe story of the movie with Sora & co finishing the world! ❤️❤️
Such a shame it was cut out because they went in a diffrend direction. But this song just explains so much about why Izmas charakter is they way she is
It's actually because they were worried the film wouldn't engage audiences due to its predictability. Also, the previous two attempts before this at making important and serious movies, "Pocahontas" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," underperformed.
It would shock a lot of people how far A LOT of films get before just being killed off. I'm glad that New Groove got made. I think the original story could have been salvaged (since test audiences didn't like it) with enough time. But given only a few weeks, a total rework was probably inevitable.
It's possible to find the entire documentary online. You just have to enter the right search terms: "the sweatbox documentary disney." It's on vidme, or vid.me, or whatever it's called.
While I do love the emperors new groove and it was probably the first Disney movie I watched when I was really little, every time I see this I always think about what could have been. The renaissance would keep going but we wouldn’t have pull the lever kronk and other things, I honestly wish we could have both but now eartha kitt is dead😢
