To date [10 JUNE 2020] this still stands as the only zombie / ghoul -related film to ever receive an academy award nomination in any category.

@Humphrey Hogan if we watch these movies with the eyes of today,they would all be awful.There are women who wonder how I can watch 30s/40s movies all the time,because of the way they were portrayed,always looking for rich husbands.We can't change the past,sadly. Mantan Moreland was a great comedian which is why he makes us laugh.Lou Costello in the Abbot & Costello movies was the same type of character as Mantan.The old movies also made people more away of some music greats like Cab Calloway.Im german,how do you think I feel about how germans were portrayed? and really,to this day,the Irish are still portrayed as drunks,the Italians are always mafia.Even in ths "new age"of ours where there are gay men in shows,they are usually flaming whiney queens.It just is what it is,and was what it was.

@Humphrey Hogan I agree with you but people like him taking all the crap role were paving the way for others. This movie is from 1941 in full segregation time there was no other opportunities for a black actor. It is not much better these day so imagine 80/90 years ago.

Lucky Ghost is another of his films I enjoy.

I came here solely because he was in the thumbnail. Warms my heart that (while he's technically only third in the credits) his name is *way* bigger than the two theoretical leads. Somebody knew where the real draw was.

Agreed. He certainly deserved better, but he did an amazing job with the limited scope of roles that Hollywood would give him in the era.

@@richmcgee434 Yes, the people comparing Mantan to Amos and Andy are way off the mark. White actors using black face and ebonics to mock blacks comically and make money are not the same thing as a talented black actor trying to get roles and survive in the racist Hollywood system of that era.

Money tends to keep people in their place. I'm guessing it keeps you in your place...slaving away for the man rather than organizing a riot because life isn't fair. Ex-slaves were still alive when this movie was made. Ending slavery was a very scary time. The racism in this movie exposes the fear that existed on both sides of the race fence. Casting so many black people back then would have been an outrageously liberal thing to do. The white actors probably took some heat from being part of this movie. The last people to admonish during this time is the film industry because they were the only people offering help and they actually changed things. Others offered mostly field work which wouldn't have changed anything.
