That’s a good Dad. She was a fourteen year old child. Why was he (the reporter) trying to make her second guess herself and erode all the confidence her parents had helped her build up? The reporter was right to be checked.

I love that he interrupted because the interviewer had a bad intention. The intention was to plant the seed of doubt. Her father knew that as a child, she can't process a person's intentions the same way as an adult would. That man wanted to see her get small, he was trying to knock her down. So, I'm happy he interrupted that man, and I'm happy we all get to see what a sly bad intention sounds like.

You will -- it'll become automatic! I remember my Dad, I was 21 and bought my first NEW car but was having issues with it within the first week I drove it off the lot, came with me to the Dealership to discuss the issue, -- just to ride along -- he said. When the Dealer offered to again fix my NEW car and *suggested* that maybe it was my bad driving (I'm a great driver, thank you), which was the issue; my 5'9" Dad, stood up and recited the statuette for Florida's lemon law. Told the dealer either I was getting another car today OR they were giving me my money back. The Dealer tried to tap dance around the real problem but my Dad wasn't having it. I drove off with another brand new car w/zero miles on the speedometer. I thought I was grown and knew everything, but I still needed my Dad's wisdom & advice.

wait since when is it wrong to ask people "how can u be so sure, u answer with so much confidence?" i ask that to people too a lot of the times just out of curiosity, it's not a crime to ask questions and figure out other people's thought process or how they came to that conclusion is it? When i ask people that they don't shout at me, they just give me their answer in a calm way, so i'm a bit confused about why the dad is so upset? when i was their age a lot of people asked me how can u be so sure? and i just answer and leave it at that and move on to talk about something else. Maybe i'm missing something here so if someone can explain that would be great.

@@danielpedersen1688 that is a just turned 14 year old child. Why ask her anything that could damage her psyche? As a professional reporter on a nationally televised show? He was attacking her subliminally. I'm old enough to remember this as a kid myself. The press hated venus. They called her cocky and tried so hard to make her a villain. But that's some of the reasons why we as black parents are so overprotective or defensive. Our children are not viewed as children to many white people subconsciously. They are only viewed as black male or female.

Tony, I had a similar situation with my daughter. I ran in the 1996 U.S Olympic Trials. I made the semi finals, but I got dusted. Ran a 10.23 and kissed the cut. My daughter started running track at 9. When she was 13, she was running 12.2. She was getting interviewed by the local newspaper. This dude kept asking how come she isn’t running on the national stage. Her 13 year old mind, she answered by saying she doesn’t know. He pressed, verbatim, saying “don’t you think you need to push yourself against better competition instead of taking the easy route?” I heard it in the other room. I stepped in. I told the dude, “Listen, my wife and I aren’t the parents to push her unless she wants to be pushed. She likes running, but she isn’t serious about it. She likes hanging with her friends. I will not allow my child to go all over the country and lose out on having crushes on boys and going to the park with her girlfriends. Why aren’t you pushing yourself for ESPN or CNN? Don’t talk to my child that way. That’s for me to ask, not you. Let her enjoy being 13. I allowed you in my house for this. Don’t disrespect my wife or my daughter again by asking those questions, or you’ll have to leave” I did that because I thought about THIS EXACT interview. I remembered it. And something clicked.

I loved this moment as well, but if you watch any one of those 60 Minutes interviews, they use that silly-ass reiteration technique with everybody. It's done for dramatic effect. By repeating the question, it also drags the interview out. Why do you have to give Richard a backhanded compliment about him defending Venus? You act like you know Richard personally to even talk about his character. Obviously, he did a great job because he took his family out of the hood and was never trying to take his daughter's shine. Richard stayed in the background. The William sisters started to fall off when their daddy wasn't as present as they age. The stupidity of people is always on full display. God isn't perfect neither because he created all this sin as well, right. On one hand. God created everything, but on the other hand, the contradiction is he didn't. Which one is it? It's very caucasian minded to take subtle derogatory jabs at black people's characters when the topic being discussed is supposed to be about positivity. The white media does it very well.

wait since when is it wrong to ask people "how can u be so sure, u answer with so much confidence?" i ask that to people too a lot of the times just out of curiosity, it's not a crime to ask questions and figure out other people's thought process or how they came to that conclusion is it? When i ask people that they don't shout at me, they just give me their answer in a calm way, so i'm a bit confused about why the dad is so upset? when i was their age a lot of people asked me how can u be so sure? and i just answer and leave it at that and move on to talk about something else. Maybe i'm missing something here so if someone can explain that would be great.

@@quelquun2018 so i wouldn’t wanna walk in your shoes anyway I’m glad of my skin color and u should be glad too for urs, as u said “you haven’t walked in our shoes” so I’m guessing ur black which is okay. For me I’m glad I’m white cuz then I don’t get stopped by police I can go where I want do what I want be where I want and not be in trouble. Also if I was black I feel like I would be complaining too much as so many black people do I see constantly on social media blacks complaining and I wouldn’t want to be one of those black people doing that. Oh the privilege how I’m so happy to have that, as clack people would call it “white privilege”. I saw the clip of this moment from the Will Smith film. It is amazing to my heart that it wasn't a made up scene, but written verbatim! It really is astounding how adults, whether intentionally or unintentionally will try to undermine children's confidence, always producing a person who is afraid and unsure. To see a father defend his child like that is BEAUTIFUL!!!
