I went to a rugby school CBHS in New Zealand and we had compulsory Haka practice everyone knows the haka and its importance to school heritage and respect for our indigenous people. It’s unreal being part of a 1500 man haka. Unity and brotherhood.
@@naitupou8923 I was in the stadium when fin hurley made the drop goal. I was in the groups of the obhs lads when it went over. The stand erupted, best moment in the game, great comeback by sbhs though. I will never forget that
Most High Schools in New Zealand will either have their own school Haka or they’ll use a haka from the local area but most have their own haka all unique in their own way and is taken very serious by most students
That mostly goes for the prestigious school like cbhs or kings regular school like the school I went to don't tend to have a haka atleast in the area I lived in
@@benwaudby6835 Every High School has their own haka since Rugby started in NZ. Not just the so called prestigious, Kelston Boys, Wesley, Palmerston, Gisborne... No NZ college or high school is with out a haka. What , you at a white fullaz school with no maori. Hika ma. 😟😭
They are two high schools, so ages 13-19 years old. In New Zealand there are primary schools ages 5-13, high schools normally ages 13-19 and University is after high school so 19+
Bro I grew up in the hood down the road from King's College. Some solid brothers came out of that school! Haka is respect. Anytime you hear Haka just know honour, respect and integrity amongst other things is involved. God bless you brother, mean reaction ❤️
The way I was told when I was there to relate to us in the US, their School's Haka is like our high school's or university's Fight Song. So these two school's hakas would be equivalent to the fight song for UCLA, or Notre Dame, or Alabama or Oklahoma. Except this rivalry would be on the Michigan vs. Ohio level. It's that big, so when the kids show up for the Haka, they go all out. Oh.. and their "college" = our high school. Our college/university = university. That should clear it up for you. So these are high schoolers.
NZ High Schools and Colleges have the same status, all the students range from 13 yrs - 18yrs. University is after High School / College. In NZ , anyways. That's how we rolls in Aotearoa, NZ.
These guys will be aged between 13-19 high school college and secondary school in New Zealand is all the same level. This type of haka is called a "wero" meaning " a challenge" . So when sports teams do a haka / wero to open a game each team is actually laying a challenge to their opponents
Around 330 Million l think for the U.S , 2,300 is a big School l think especially as you said 5 million. I'm in Australia and my High school closed in my last year and only had about 350 students.
So in Nz Colleges start from 11years to 17-18, highschools start from 13 to 17-18. But every school have their own haka and uniform that represents not only the but also their fellow senors. And the guy in the middle is the #1 person in the whole kura. So its a huge privilege to be him.
highschool/college/secondary school are the same in New Zealand college in the US is University in New Zealand and in most countries 13 - 19 years old ' year 7 - year 13' most of these players are 16 - 19 years old
High school/College and secondary school are basically the same. For college which is after you turn 18 we call that university where you get your degrees etc. High school age is from 14-18
Should react to some South African High school rugby, notable schools to check out are Grey Kollege (they're widely regarded as the best rugby school in the world), Paarl Boys, Paarl Gimnasium, Paul Roos Gimnasium.
I go to Auckland grammar and the boys doing the Haka are just the people that stay at the boarding house. Around 150 students but mostly everyone at the school knows the haka. The hakas performed are school hakas and are specialised to the school performing.
I f*ing love this. Gives me chills. I played for 27 years before my body let me down and I had to have 2 plastic discs inserted into my neck. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. This game is … LIFE!
Some schools in NZ are called high schools and some are called colleges but it is the same thing. Secondary schools also is meaning high schools. The only name for what you call college in America is universities which because NZ is quite small and only have a few universities they just have a club rugby team in their city. For example in my city, there is Otago university and they play against all of the other rugby clubs in the city not against other universities.
yeah bro college here is secondary school and all colleges got their own Haka and all the lads are 18. I went to SHC bro and lads from grammar and king always going hard#respect
Correction. Burger King wears our hats. I went to high school in New Zealand in the 1950s and wearing caps then was already a long established tradition so was every high school having its own Haka. Burger King wasn’t even thought of then.
Im Australian, and New Zealand is just across the pond!..The Haka has many meanings..What you see here is a challenge to battle!..But Haka's can be done as a lament..To express joy..To tell a story..Almost anything!..Funny story, may be apocraphal, but probably true..WW2..Middle east, a NZ regiment facing an Italian division!..Kiwi's did a rather ferocious Haka full in the faces of the Italians!..Then charged with fixed bayonets over the hill!..Not an Italian to be seen!..They'd used their heads and gotten clean out of it..So they werent all dumb!
These are both Highschools, over here we call Highschool college and we call college University, the lads playing are about 18 at max, maybe some stay for an extra year making them 19, Kings had a lot more people performing the haka because they were the home team for this game
Is it mad to anyone else that Jimmy Neesham, Lockie Ferguson and Kyle Jamieson all went to school together? Imagine facing up against that bowling attack in high school
Exactly how it is suppose to affect you. It is a challenge to you to come to the party and reciprocate. If the haka is firing you up then its intent is working.
Every student learns the haka for their school but only like 20-50% care to learn it properly enough to perform for the big games. I imagine these Lare Boys only schools is like 50-80% learn it properly because the culture is way thighter in boarding schools
If you really want to see what it's all about try to find "NZ Maori vs. Australian Aboriginal.. Rugby League!..The Aboriginal side advanced on the Maori Haka brandishing spears at them!..A Sport tv network from the USA got so upset by what they saw as approaching mayhem..They vacated the field!..Great game though, They dismembered each other gloriously! NZ won the match!
Yes. I read in a few comments that they may be as old as 19. I doubt that. When I played 1st 1V for my college Marlborough Boys I was the oldest player in the team. I was 18. I was playing senior at 19.
two high schools and also American college would be called University in NZ in short college = American high school, and University is like saying collage or university Murican speak.
@@thatsthat2612 They sometimes do, depends on the school though. I personally went to all boys schools so my guess is from viewing stuff like this. Short answer, sometimes
I went to Auckland Grammar at the time when David Graham was headmaster....I always thought our rivalry was more with Mount Albert Grammar rather than Kings...at 5:00, if you think a haka is about indigenous people making a political statement, or waving a taiaha around is about aggression, then you don't understand the point of a haka
In NZ we start with, kindie, for the babies' up to 4yrs old,5 they start primary school until,11/12 then they go to, High school,or College, then if need be, university, these kid's are high school,or college, What America call's college,we call, university,
Hahahaha your a crackup g....those hats ARE wack...and that fella was 100% ass slap happy 😂...im from nz so i can say what i want lol. All day though....meeeeean hakas
4:06 hey bro, I was part of Grammar and the First XV team one time, and the Haka is done by the boarding school students from both schools. Kings, being a private primarily boarding school, has way more people, but we're always louder and go way harder💙💛
@@deankumeroa1515 the women were Warriors too yes. I never said they weren't. What I said, was they had their own haka. And my.father told me. He was born 1925 and was brought up the old way
... Why is an american watching the King's College rugby Haka? The Haka is a traditional war dance, developed for intimidation, which was revived for sports in the 70s. These schools are 'elite' schools where prominent families send their kids in New Zealand. But not overly prestigious by USA standards.
You don't know shit. The All Blacks have been doing the Haka for over a hundred years. As for your extremely insensitive comment about the lack of prestige of our colleges compared to the USA don't even go there. Nobody wants to be compared to the modern shit fest that the USA has become. You asked for it you got it. Have a nice day.
Sean..... I went to King's college and the rivalry between King's and Auckland grammar has always been strong..... However mate, don't get over dramatic!! !.... This is all show!.... Yeah, there are some big lads.... But so what?.... It's all show bro.. Been there, done that.....don't believe everything you see on RU-vid /Internet......
