its a bit of a grey area. as the treaty is between the empire and julius side. they attacked souma`s side in a technicality as they are not a part of said treaty. souma is in no obligation to return the territory. but under the ideal of thee treaty. the empire must mediate. as its to prevent casualties from getting to big, while there is still a looming treat of the demons. the empire has to mediate under good faith not obligation. as to keep its reputation, they must involve them self or make a hard cut. other wise it would ruin the integrity of the treaty. both souma and the empire cant afford to not have a deal. for souma, it would mean further isolation, and possible a war with the empire. while the empire cant afford to be used by another nation. especially not a defeated one. the other option was for julius to revoke his request towards the empire, which make their confrontation null and void. but that is not a choice for them to make. like souma pointed out. its not a negotiation with julius, but with the empire.

Well the +running to the Empire and getting their military isn't a sign of strength+ part is situational right. In Julius case it is a clear show of weakness since he even started with his own invasion. If it was the other way around and Souma would have attacked them first (if he was evil or someting) for now reason, and Julius would realise that he cant beat them alone, admitting to there inferior strenght and abandom there pride to call for help can be a sign of strenght. Many people (including the normal and real life) are often way to pridefull to ask for help when they cant do something alone.

This isn't just a matter of pride and strength, Souma's way of thinking about the law's and on the battle field are proof of his strategy for governing a kingdom. Julius clearly lack logic of recognizing where he stands with limited options due to his OWN FAULTS.

True enough. During equivalent times on Earth, if you were even allowed to retain your sword (which you wouldn't be, often enough) drawing it would be violating parley, and grounds for instant death.

Only reason was cause he was technically under the protection of the Empire. Even if they didn't want to, they were still obligated stand by his side in the dealings.

Actually Julius is a little bit above mediocore general, his father was a very good general. At least in my opinion.

U have to command your army with an iron fist to instil discipline, order, authority and respect so as to prevent a coup. But citizen? u can't do that. Julius has to use another approach to get them to respect him

Washing your hands and purifying water are ultra easy to do. Installing modern concepts shouldn't be hard with the only exception in the show being the issue of slavery. The show handled that and explained why an immediate stop to it wasn't a great idea technically even if it was a great idea realistically.

In the show, even he is surprised when he forgets that he could use it to host commercials for merchants, so it's not like he was actively looking to maximize and implement our societal standards completely. Most of his aids and advisors give him crap for it and demand he wear nicer things "fitting his station". When he finally does accept "being king", he does wear nicer clothes. But, part of what he is wearing now is a statement that "he is the provisional king, and not the real thing".

However, anime like these generally has a small but niche community, but I am no one to judge because when animes like Classroom of the Elite, which suddenly got a season 2 and will receive complete adaptation of the series, after almost everyone gave up hope because of sudden increase in sales in Japan and In Another World with My Smartphone, which is dogshit anime at most can get season 2, I don't see why this will not get a new season. The LN sales are quite good , we can only hope.

I feel the need to clarify one point: "realist" in this context is not the same as "realistic". In international relations, "realism" is a policy of essentially securing your own position before anything else, whether it be other countries, ideals, or even possibly ethics. This is in contrast to "liberalism", which instead focuses on cooperation for the greater good. Souma draws a lot from Machiavelli, whose "The Prince" is basically the playbook to be an effective, of sometimes necessarily cruel, ruler. An example is how he forced the Kingdom's forces under his authority alone, despite the fact that the division was for the sake of balancing power. But since it would be a hindrance in the oncoming conflict, he chose to override the Dukes' sovereignty for the greater good. He shows plenty of outside the box thinking in the series.

"Realist", not "realistic". Realism will naturally take hits for the sake of the narrative, and due to the genre, but the "realist" in the title simply refers to his method of ruling, as it's being used in its political definition.
