a not so fun fact: when they prepared and recorded this performance they were having their "fireworks" comeback at the same time. if you watch kingdom or ateez's kingdom behind the scene you'll know that they went to music shows during the day and practise for this at night and did not sleep at all for days. and the fact that they still slayed this performance when they're exhausted as hell. they worked really hard

Kingdom: Legendary War is a competition from MNET. Where different groups compete with each other and earn points from an array of criteria. And basically the KPOP group with the highest points win. Catch is each level or week, different themes will be given. In this season, they were able to use their debut songs, exchanging with the other teams, collaborating and a lot. This was the recent season but there are two more seasons from the past, Queendom and Road to Kingdom (correct me if i'm wrong for this). This was such a good platform to experience KPOP in various artistic forms, creating friendship and promotion to garner more recognition, fame and fans.

Despite the fact that Ateez didn’t win the whole show, everyone knows they deserved to. This performance was ranked the top performance of 2021 and is easily the most legendary stage from Kingdom (I say this as a multi who likes every group on the show). Fun fact: Yes, the performance is based on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Hongjoong spent a whole night (after their "Fireworks" promotion of that day) watching all the movies so he could get ideas for the performance. That's how they decided to include the bonebreaking dancers (to imitate the living skeletons of the first movie) and the Kraken, for example.

They are literally raising the standards for kpop performances. I am so proud of how far these boys have come having watched them for almost as long as they've been around as ATEEZ. We went from a small group and fandom that very few knew about to a group that even seniors in the industry and critics sing praises about any time they step on stage. People these boys look up to get amazed themselves and that says a lot. They have some of the best stage presence I have ever seen, Jongho's vocals are just wow, I would say they easily rival so many seniors, and their performances in general are literally hypnotic. You get drawn into their world so easily without realising. It happened with me. The first group I ever ulted after 12/13 years in kpop and they've only continued to grow and get better. Even people who don't stan them have said so many good things about them and I can't emphasise how much it makes my heart swell. I really can't wait to see what they have for us in the future.

Kingdom is basically a competition show between six groups (ateez,straykids,btob,sf9,the boyz and ikon) in this show each round they are given certain theme or like they are given a criteria in which they have to perform and each round based on their performance's ranking they get points..the group with the most points at the same end wins...during this show in one round the six groups were divided in two teams three in each (ateez,straykids and btob in one group) and (sf9 the boyz and ikon) in another and they had to prepare three performances (vocal , rap and dance) and each unit had to compete with the other..kingdom is a great show we could see the interaction between our favourite groups..we could see so many wonderful artists with their beautiful performance

This was the best kingdom performance for me. Ateez were amazing ❤ They were first in the expert voting for this performance, but the fans of the other fandoms brought them down bc of tactical reasons in the audience voting. It was unfair and embarrassing, but in the end Ateez won many new fans like me with their great and powerful performances 🙂

ATEEZ did so well in Kingdom. Actually all the groups did and that program introduced me to so many good kpop bugs. I am and will always be so proud of them all but ATEEZ stayed with me. If you watch the Answer/Ode to Joy performance you’ll love that too. And the Mayfly it was all so good. I wish Mayfly would be a real sub unit and do more work together. it never fails to blow my mind away that after placing 5th out of 6 teams during their introduction stage (and mind you they already did wonderfully for that stage) theybcame back with this for the first official round. and admist their comeback for "fireworks (i'm the one)". and mind you comeback promotional eras include things like early morning rehearsals, pre-filming, live stages and they have to repeat the whole routine for different music show broadcast stations, and then they have dance practices, variety show filmings and prepare for kingdom as well. and i'm not sure when the filming for the kdrama "imitation" took place but 4/8 of ateez members were actors in the drama with yunho being the 2nd male lead of the show...... and they still managed to put out extraordinary and creative performances. they truly deserved their first #1 for this round, they blew the competition out of the water. also the leader/captain hongjoong actually participated in this rearrangement of their original song "wonderland" and the members all came up with ideas for the stage directing it was incredible n fascinating to watch the behind the scenes

The time an hourglass is 'set' to is largely based on the amount of sand and size of the hole for it to pour through. They're pre-set, usually to like 1 minute, 3 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour etc. You can't like, edit the time haha

Watching Kingdom was what got me into Ateez. The way they absolutely murdered the stage with every performance, they didn't win Kingdom, but in my heart of hearts they won cuz their performances were masterpieces.

4:50 yeah their concept has always been pirates (and they sprinkle in some alternate dimension in their storyline for good measure😂) i'd hongjoong, the leader, is jack sparrow (fun fact: usually the group's leader is known as the leader, but ateez call hongjoong the captain. they really love their pirate lore lol)

The sand thingies are called hourglasses, depending on the amount of sand, size of the hourglass and the size of the hole that the sand falls through a certain time is set, the quicker sand falls the quicker the time is over. You can’t change the time, they have a set time. (e.g. 30 minutes, or for games you have some with 30 seconds, but it has a really wide range)

Apart from ATEEZ's pirate theme, the performance was also inspired by POTC. Hongjoong watched the movies during the preparation for this stage and included the kraken and body-breaking skeletons

They chose this song for the To The World round because they wanted to introduce their theme to all the other fandoms (they were the least experienced and least well-known group on KLW). It was a competition between less recognized boy groups for a spot on KLW. I recommend watching it first because the budgets were lower. Still the performances were incredible.

An hourglass is calibrated as it's being made - the type/size of sand grains, width of the neck, etc all factor into it. They are made to measure different lengths of time. If it's meant to measure an hour, it's designed to take an hour to empty the sand completely into the bottom chamber. ....and pirates have been a theme for Ateez since they debuted.

Their “theme” for when they first debuted was pirate theme for the the song Pirate I think but it’s been their thing loll their music is *chefs kiss*

Ok, I wanted to let you know what "Road To Kingdom" is. So what you just watched was one of ATEEZ's preformances from episode 2, of season 2. "Road to Kingdom" is a survival reality show from MNet. The first season actually was in the spring of 2020, with 7 guy groups that at the time had yet to get their first music show win. Not to mention it was a sequel to MNet's other show "Queendom." Groups from the first season 1. Pentagon 2. ONF 3. Golden Child 4. The Boys (they won this season) 5. Vetiver 6. ONEUS 7. TOO THROUGH a series of challenges where each group had to preform a re-arranged versions of their own songs, covers of their senior groups songs, and make and produce new songs for the shoe. The show also added the consideration of each groups most recent comeback and how well it did, judging each week from a panel of experts, and a gobal vote. No group was ever eliminated from the show, so the results kept changing every week. Second season groups: 1. The Boys (1st season winners 2. ATEEZ 3. STRAY KIDS 4. SF9 5. IKON (senior group) 6. BTOB (senior group) You really need to check out the first seasons preformances. There are quite a few that will make your jaw dropped...I promise. One of my fav groups was on season one, and that would be Pentagon. Most of their preformances are the best of the season. Check out their song "Shine," as well as the song they created for the show "Basquiat," and lastly, they did a preformance with two other groups where they did "Blackpink's Let's Kill This Love," that is so incredible. Now to answer your other question....yes they are pirates...it is a major part of their storyline that runs throughout 99.9% of their videos. And that thing in front of Hongjoong in the beginning that you asked about is an "Hourglass," and that to is a major point of their storyline. And no, there is no way to set it for a certain time. When the sand is all at the bottom, you than turn it over in which you have exactly an HOUR till all the sand runs out. Which I'm pretty sure why they called it an hour glass. And keep in mind this preformance you just watched placed ATEEZ in first place, of course. However, this preformance happen the exact next week after they came in dead last for the introductions of all the groups the week before. Even though when on camera they made no excuses of why they came in last, just that they would do their best for the next week. And as you can see they did. Behind the scenes we found out that they were the only group that was in the middle of promotions for their song "Fireworks," and when they had done the intro, about an hour or two before that they were at another music studio preforming "Fireworks." They went to MNet and did the 90 second intro. Check out the 2nd seasons 1st episode and you can see for yourself. I know this was a really long post. And I apologize...I actually had to condense it. But I wanted to give you what you were reqesting...what is Kingdom? I do hope what info I gave you helped you understand why so many fans love the show...but don't get me started on why there were so many problems with it too...but that is for another time... This particular stage by Ateez is the pinnacle of any great performance that you will ever see of any kpop artist. It was magnificent and absolutely flawless. I have not seen one stage from any other kpop group that has ever topped it to this day. When people say that Ateez are monster live performers, they aren't kidding. In spite of the skewed results on Kingdom, they were hands down the best performers on the show and have only gotten better if you can believe it. They literally blew my mind, and like you, this particular stage left me absolutely shocked and speechless at the time. This was on the level of what you would see for a Broadway musical and no one else could have pulled it off but them. I still go back to this stage occasionally just to remind myself that it actually happened. Kudos to Ateez and their entire production team who pulled this off in spite of the fact that they hadn't had any sleep for almost 3 straight days. It was beyond brilliant!

i think usually an hourglass measures one hour at a time, but i'm pretty sure there are variations where it can be for a certain time(by changing the amount of sand and the dimensions of the hole through which it falls, i'm guessing) because i do remember seeing a 24-hour hourglass online

okay, so if you don't know what _Kingdom: Legendary War_ is.. it is something what people call a "survival show". the show used to be aired on Mnet (a South Korean music television channel) between early April and early June of last year, although the actual recordings started in late February. and if you're curious why there are so many performances: except ATEEZ, there were 5 other boy groups that debuted between 2012-18 (BTOB, iKON, SF9, THE BOYZ, Stray Kids) and they were competiting here too. the show is just like a battle between all of the groups which featured 4 rounds in total for 10 episodes in total and the main purpose was to showcase every groups creativity and potential by performing the brand new renditions of their title tracks as also covers of some great K-pop hits and even collaborations. the group that has received the most points from the experts would've won (but not in every episode) and the last episode had to predict who will finish at the 1st place, win the Kingdom trophy and have a special one-week reality show and all of that was snagged by Stray Kids.

They actually won this round and the one after this (Awakening of Summer stage). If I remember correctly.

Depending on how much sand is in one compartement and depending on how big or small the connection between the two compartements is when you turn the sand clock, the time can be measured for as many minutes as you want but you need different amounts of sand, and once the sand is in the sand clock you cant change the time it takes for the sand to fall. Normally the sand clocks measure 3 minutes. So when you turn the clock, it takes exactly 3 minutes until all the sand falls through the connection. As for the concept here with the pirates of the carribean: That is because it is the concept of Ateez. Hongjoong , their leader is the captain, like on a ship and the other 7 are his crew although they are of course one group. But since Hoongjoong doesnt like being the leader they came up with the concept of captain and all their backstory is connected to ships and pirates and a long journey :)

Kingdom: Legendary War is a performance competition that aired a few months ago on Mnet. 6 Groups (Btob, iKon, SF9, The Boyz, Stray Kids, Ateez) prepare performances for a certain theme/criteria (a song that was #1 in music shows, a song to show to the world,...), usually a remake/remix of one of their songs, and get evaluated by judges, themselves and fan voting - the group with most combined points wins. For one challenge they got to switch songs with another group on the show, there was a sports day (lots of funny moments, maybe check it out sometime) and for one show they made three groups work toghether to create a rap-, dance- and vocal-perfomance toghether - the "wolf" stage you already reacted to is the dance stage for the Mayfly unit (Ateez, Skz, Btob). For the sand watch thingy: depending on the amount of sand it takes a certain time until all of the sand drops to the other side, so it's not really to show the time but like a timer (so if you buy one for let's say five minutes, if all the sand is one side and then you turn it around, all of the sand will be on the other side after five minutes) - I hope this is somewhat understandable 😅 4:40 Ateez does indeed have a pirate concept since debut (also, I think Hongjoon actually watches the Pirates of the carribean films when looking for inspiratin for this stage lol)

Yes that was an hour glass & yes it was used to measure the passing of time before the invention of the clock BUT in the Ateez Universe it is called a Kromer which allows Ateez & HALA-teez to travel between dimensions.
