One of the most well-known kingfishers in Sri Lanka is the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the Eurasian Kingfisher. This bird has vibrant blue and orange plumage and is often seen near freshwater habitats.
Sri Lanka also has several endemic kingfisher species, meaning they are found only in Sri Lanka and nowhere else in the world. Some of these include:
1 - Sri Lanka Blue Magpie (Urocissa ornata): While not a kingfisher, this bird is endemic to Sri Lanka and is known for its striking blue plumage and long tail.
2 - Sri Lanka White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis fusca): This is a subspecies of the White-throated Kingfisher found in South Asia. It has a distinctive blue back and wings, with a white throat and chest.
3 - Sri Lanka Pygmy Kingfisher (Ceyx psalidotos): This is a small and colorful kingfisher species endemic to Sri Lanka. It has a bright blue and orange plumage.
