I've never searched for bokken reviews on RU-vid, so I wouldn't actually know if there are any others out there. This is the first Bokken review that I've seen, and as far as I know, the only one in the sword community. Good on you for doing something new, Matt

Everything I've ever heard about hickory leads me to believe it is the ideal wooden weapon. Preferred by people famous for violence. Thanks for this review, I love getting training weapons to match my swords and this one seems awesome.

Kingfisher is awesome. Yes, theirs is hickory. Mine lasted 10+ years of TSKSR training until it failed at DC seminar. Do oil periodically. I recommend teak oil.

This is a great review and comparison! Thanks much for sharing. Looks like you really have a winner here. You mentioned the eventual deterioration of your Sensei’s bokken; I was just discussing the manner in which wooden wasters can possibly break depending on construction and use. Do you know if it just developed too many big chips in the monouchi or if it had cracks along the long grain?

I also recommend King Fisher products they hold up well and are generally well shaped.

My ipe wood one holds up very well. White oak I found was a softer wood.

I've been very happy with everything I've gotten from Kingfisher. The shipping cost seems a little high though, but I suppose that's the nature of shipping long skinny items.

Hickory simulates fiberglass. Hickory is just an amazing wood to use.

Cool company name :) They had a similar one (maybe same brand?) at the Aikido dojo I used to attend. Immediately caught my eye and had to swing it around, but the teacher was like "no, use this top-heavy one instead". What a goof, I didn't stay at that class very long. Nice footage and really well proportioned bokken

Kingfisher is the best. I have one of their Shinto models (very general purpose) and have gotten the edge to be nice and seasoned by using it with Purpleheart Armory's synthetic bokken. Hard to beat hickory in hand, though.

Do you know where I could buy Japanese oak to make my own bokken?

Matt’s swing’s no joke, he broke His teacher’s oaken bokken; While Matt’s own arm Remained unbroken.

Minnesotans know that surviving in your trunk in a Minnesota winter and summer is a true accomplishment! I had sparring pads fused together.

Nuce bokken. Hickory is the way to go. Im from TN so im really familiar w/ it. We make all.our axe handles etc from it. I have found over the years that i prefer a slightly diff shaped grip.but still very nice.

Looks like a really great bokken, I would like to try it! I use a shirokashi bokken, ow is it compared to this? Also, which line o Tsksr do you practice in?

The majority of drum sticks I've owned were made out of hickory. They need to be. They take quite a whacking.

Kingfisher uses Appalachian Hickory and it has the highest yield strength & shock resistance of any American Hardwood…

if you use it alot, then sure, an $160 stick might be worth it, although i personally feel weird about that since my steel katana is worth $106(after tax). i don't know much about bokkens but i would assume a regular one is worth around 20-30 usd? if the craftmanship and wood used is superior, if that's important to you, and it'll last years with hard use, then i guess it's worth it, since you'll use it more then your steel swords
