Kingship in Macbeth | Theme Analysis

Kingship: A04; in middle ages (11th century) kings were believed to be chosen by gods and this phenomenon is known as the divine right of kings. In jacobean era people believed in the great chain of being which is a social order where the kings are positioned at the top as god’s representatives ruling over the other humans and all of nature. Most of what shakespeare does in the play is to impress and get the attention of the new king l James the first. He firstly does this by starting the play with the witches and king James was especially known for his works of burning 100s of witches and for his book “demonologe”. Secondly he does this by potraying Duncan as a good king and that if he dies the natural order will be distrupted and what this does is make people rethink of their gunpowder plot (rebel against king James) and to back away from it which can get king James’s appreciation towards Macbeth. In play: We can see the kingship mainly in three individuals of great power and potential: Macbeth, King Duncan and Malcolm whom are the only people we see of ruling or had ruled Scottland. Shakespeare mainly utilizes King Duncan to resemble king James the first by the emphasizing the “human kindness” and his qualities of being humble. To be continued…
