This is a 5 days trip to Kinmen. We visited 4 Old Villages with Traditional Architecture of Fujian, 8 classic private Western Style Houses, and 8 surrounding historical buildings or attractions located in Jinhu Township, Jinsha Township, and Jincheng Township, to explore the historical story of Kinmen’s ancestors who left hometown for Southeast Asia to make their living.
According to statistics compiled by the Kinmen County Overseas Chinese Association in 1971, there were about 110,000 people living in Southeast Asia, with Singapore having the largest population of about 50,000, followed by Indonesia with about 25,000 people and the Malay Peninsula with about 24,000 people.
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, they went to Southeast Asia, including East Malaysia, West Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesian islands, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, etc., in order to improve their economic.
Maybe not everyone can make a lot of fortune, but as long as they get rich through business, they would remit the money back. In addition to building a western style house for their expected retirement, they would also set up schools to give back to the hometown. This also resulted in the heyday of Western-style building construction in Kinmen from 1910 to the 1940s.
In addition to old villages with traditional architecture of Fujian and western style houses, we also ate local delicacies (10 restaurants in total). Let’s listen to stories, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and eat delicious food together.
