It is wonderful to see the traditional technique!! I have some pottery that has broken and wanted to mimic the look of kintsugi when repairing. Of course, I’m using materials I can find at hardware stores and art shops on a low budget, (epoxy and copper leaf) but as I file away the adhesive, I wanted to study the result of the traditional technique so I can get my “budget version” as similar looking as possible. I love the philosophy behind this art: take care to repair a broken object, but don’t try to shun its history. Instead highlight and celebrate it as a thing of beauty because the object has been used and loved.
So Amazing the traditional Japanese technique! I think that only ceramics can be repaired by Kintsugi, water does not leak from the inside? I wonder how strong it after repairs :)
Maybe you are still interested in an answer. If the traditional approach is used you should not be using it for consumption the varnish is highly contact allergic and most of people will have a horrendous experience even brushing against it. If you want to use it after you would have to use something like UV resin.
If it was real gold, it would be too valuable to use of course! Although it's often gold colored mica powder. And while gold is safe to eat, nothing else in this procedure is! Strictly art.
@@squirlmy mich w and you don’t know what you’re taking about. Urushi lacquer is water proof and not harmful when dried. Haven’t you ever heard of lacquer ware soup bowls, they are all made from urushi lacquer
@@michaw.2168 As said, urushi is allergenic only when not dried and hardened. After that, it is foodsafe. The hardening process takes up to about a week (per coating) when done right. Epoxys however is seldom food safe, and the ones that are called "food safe" is often only safe when no heat is applied. Making it kind of not food safe anyways. Dried urushi can take a temperature of 120 degrees celcius, which is warmer than boiling. Food will never be warmer than 100 C. Thus urushi is food safe, but I wouldn't trust any glue no matter the salespersons claims.
