You probably won’t see this, but I have some tips for working with silver metal clay, I work with it for part of my business and have some videos on my second channel Jodie Boo. Use a barrier cream on your fingers to stop the wet clay from sticking to fingers and tools, it’s very sticky. It’s not great for sculpting so you’re better off making a sculpy model and casting it in two part silicon to make a mould. To make a ring for hanging, add a flat circle of clay to the top and when it’s still clay, but dried, use a small drill bit to put a hole in it. You can keep adding water to moisten the clay as it dries and working in a colder environment helps stop it drying. You can let it air dry for 24hrs, you don’t want any moisture in it when fired as it’ll creak or explode. And you can use a small butane torch (creme brûlée torch) to fire the clay instead of that ceramic kiln. The torch just needs to reach over 600 degrees to fire silver and heat the piece evenly for 4-5 minutes. You have to keep the flame moving or risk melting it.

Look at it this way, no one can take them away from you (I have multiple backups of my computer stuff on multiple devices, DVD -R, flash drives, external HD, and drop box... yet I still don’t trust it to still be there in a couple years. I refuse to buy ebooks if they don’t let me back them up, and I buy cds still. I honestly doubt digital media will still be online a decade from now. Netflix can’t even keep some series available for more than a couple years before removing them. Remember, licensing changes over time. When that happens it’s discontinued and will be removed from streaming. DVDs and blu ray will keep for decades if taken care of.

I'm allergic to metals too. with one exception. Precious metals. I think that's the case for most people who are allergic to metals. most non-precious metals contain nickel. thats what most people are allergic to. thanks for the video! I like this unique kit.

We're allergic to alloy, it is because of the coating used by the manufacturer. You don't have to buy precious metals, but you could buy stainless steel jewelry. If ut is alloy (mixed metal) or if it is "gold plated" jewelry it would tarnish on your skin because you may probably have an acidic skin.

I still use DVD because I’m cheap and Blu-ray is still more expensive. As a casual movie-watcher the higher quality doesn’t matter much to me so if I can get something on DVD instead I do 🤷‍♂️

You can buy that exact brand of metal clay at Fire Mountain Gems .com. I’ve wanted to use the metal clay but thought a small kiln was needed. It’s pretty cool that a basic pot kiln will work, too! Now to get to making!

kiln is best, but you can also fire it on a stovetop if you have a gas stove, or even with a small butane torch.

The clay set, I remember seeing years ago on a Martha Stewart episode they were using the precious metal clays to make different jewelry, it amazed me back than, and still intrigues me today. You can get other metals than silver too.

Idea: sculpt what you want out of sculpey, make a mold with brushable/moldable silicone, and then use that for the silver clay! (Also I've definitely seen these clays on amazon!)

Jackie: "oh DVD you have blessed us from the 1990s" As someone who grew up in the 90s, despite DVDs first releasing in 97 most people still had tapes/vhs for like another 7-8 years. When they first released DVDs were stupidly expensive compared to tapes and that wasn't even bringing in buying a new device for playing them into it! As such DVDs are more a 2000's thing rather than 90s

We still had VHS primarily until about 2008-2009, though that's primarily because we already had a huge collection and a working VHS player.

Remember laser disc's!? 😆 🤣 😂 BTW I graduated HS in 97. No one I knew had a DVD player, but a rich kid and a rich family friend had the laser disks, so posh Lol. I remember a feature though where you could play a short segment of a movie on a replay loop. Jurassic Park the original was hilarious with this function 🤣

You are such a joy to watch. And so talented. PMC is fairly common in jewelry making and there are plenty of supply sources. A local beading store might even have it. As long as you don’t hurt yourself or have an allergic reaction to the stuff, please do more

Since the clay dries up fast, I’d suggest to make your project with normal clay/Sculpey first, then make a mould out of it and only then use the silver clay. For the mould you can use any silicone on e or just that Japanese reusable plastic thing (Oyumaru: the one you soften up with hot water and then use it)

yep, rio grande is a professional jewelry-making supply company, it's legit. they've had the clay for yeaaaars, and I've wanted to try it for a long time, I just thought you had to have a pottery kiln to use it. Now I need to look at their site again and see if they have this starter kit!

I highly doubt this is real metal, I'm not sure though. I just don't understand what is happening that could turn this into actual solid silver. My theory is that it is more of a glaze that has been dried out and made into a clay-like consistency. I also don't know much about metal making so I could be wrong, but I do know a little about ceramics and clay. With that said and even for the price it is still worth it because ceramics is expensive and you might be able to use this to make ceramic charms, mini pots, other jewelry and nick-nack possibilities.

@@tanyahandley3466 This really is actual fine silver. There are silver particles suspended in the clay along with a binder. When it's fired, the clay parts burn off while the silver particles fuse together in a process called sintering. It's the same process used by 3D printers that produce metal prints. The clay she's using is called Precious Metal Clay and it comes in several different metals like bronze, silver, and gold. It's really interesting stuff!

This clay is actual clay. Mineral clay. Not polymer clay. Hence the earthy smell. But this means you can add water to re-soften it and avoid cracking! For next time haha

Pretty sure the second wire mesh you put ontop is to prevent pieces flying everywhere if it explodes. It doesn't tend to happen often but can if there are any airpockets in the clay. Keep up the awesome vids! :D

Jackie, you can get PMC from Fire Mountain Gems! I first saw this over 20 years ago 😄 You should be able to get it from Michael's, or another specialty craft and hobby shop (check out places that sell stuff for making miniatures, for like DnD, Warhammer, etc) 😁

Silver, gold, titanium and steel are less likely to cause reactions; people that are allergic to metals usually show more sensitivity to other metals like nikel and cadmium

Several years ago, my church made several hundred crosses out of the bronze metal clay (using molds) for Lent. I still have and wear mine, and so do a lot of other people. I'd like to do more with the metal clay, but I don't have a kiln. The clay is nearly pure metal, just enough clay to make it shapeable. The clay burns off in the kiln. The bronze, at least, can be worked by adding a touch of water.

you can fire smaller pieces on gas range burner, or with a little butane torch. kiln is better and more reliable, but you CAN get away with using just above.

Engineering grain here! What you are doing is metallurgy! It's most likely made by Mitsubishi because a large number of car parts are made through powdered metal (albeit without the clay). In most manufacturing places powered metal comes in large buckets and is pressed in molds using high force. After they have been pressed they are placed into an oven and heated to a certain temp. They are then permitted to rest in a warm environment to fully harden. These parts can then be used on planes, car, boats, etc. After powdered metal is pressed together (but before heating) it becomes EXTREMELY fragile, which is probably why they had you heat it with a hair dryer prior to sanding, so your crafted piece doesn't break apart during sanding. When you said they don't have ovens putting it in a small "heater" makes sense. Why they also tell you to wait 24hrs also makes sense, otherwise your part would not have become fully hardened and safe to use. Tldr powdered metal is cool but so help you if you breathe it in because all you'll smell is metal for the rest of the day.

It's like a printer/photo copier, but instead of printing out the copy on your end it sends it to another printer, in another location and prints it there. It uses a phone line instead of a wifi connection to do so. Pretty much the way documents were sent before the internet was really a reliable thing.

Just an FYI because you said you'd never heard of this clay before, theres an online company called Fire Mountain Gems that sells both gold and silver clay. Or at least they used to, I looked into it when I used to make jewelry.
