Kirby 64 - Zero Two Theme Remix [🎷Sax Cover Story📖]

Little is known about Kirby' "Zero-Two", but let's investigate this Kirby 64 ultimate nemesis in today's sax cover story - hear the cover; read the story!
Since there is little revealed about Kirby's dark matter trilogy (which, for those keeping track at home, would be Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, all of which were directed by Shinichi Shimomura since the series' creator Masahiro Sakurai was working on Super Smash Bros at the time), there's actually surprisingly little lore available regarding these mysterious figures. However, based on what we do know about the Kirby series in general, we can try to piece together a few things:
At best, we can say that the physics of the Kirby universe operates slightly differently than our own. Our own universe has "normal" baryonic matter that is affected by the four forces -- gravity, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force and weak nuclear force. Based on the properties of baryonic matter, we know this is not all there can be -- hence, "dark matter" has been hypothesized to make up the difference. This matter is "dark" because it interacts very weakly with typical matter -- since dark matter does not interact with electromagnetism (which is how we get light), it is invisible.
In the Kirby universe, we must derive a 5th fundamental force -- wish power. The Kirby universe is full of the power of the will or "wish power" and how it can be used for good...but more often, for ill. Wish power is implied to be a part of the universe itself because it is attributed to stars -- in the same way that stars in our own conventional universe are the source of the matter that makes everything else up.
In such a universe with 5 fundamental forces, how might dark matter interact with this 5th fundamental force? Does dark matter perhaps have a weakened or corrupted relationship with such? And if a dark matter being could become cognizant of wish power and interact with it through its interactions with baryonic matter beings, what could it do next?

Wow, I've heard a number of Zero/0^2 theories, but this one was new to me. Shiver Star being linked in, almost treating it like a frozen Earth, and humans trying to figure out the actual Dark Matter holding the universe together. All really cool.

The fun, yet challenging part is that there simply is so much we don't know about Dark Matter, 0, and 02, so a lot of things can be made up without going too far "against" canon. But definitely take a very close look at the stage select screen for Shiver Star though -- that's pretty much canon right there.

Oh for sure. It practically looks like Earth. You took it a step further and linked it with Dark Matter which was neat. One of my favorite aspects, too, about Dark Matter, as you've already said, is that there is just almost nothing we know. Like, what was going on in the developer's heads when they created Dark Matter, Zero, and 0^2? I don't think we'll ever know.

I love the idea of wishes being a fundamental force of physics in the Kirby universe. Love the s|p|a|c|e dancing, and the performance sounds awesome, especially with the crazy synthiness in the background! Also, shoutouts to Gamer of the Winds!

I've got BIG plans on speculating more about wishes as a fundamental force here. Most of the games plots ultimately revolve around someone's wishes (and how it goes sour in their pursuit of the artifacts they believe will help them achieve their wishes). There's a lot of discussion about desire and willpower in terms of agency, being in control vs being controlled by others. I think there's a lot of depth behind the cute veneer.

I am really impressed with how the series is mixing the two together -- you can play the games without really diving too deep, but if you want the "true" endings, you'll run into a lot of serious dark stuff.

@@subversiveasset I really enjoy the scientific approach to magic as a 5th fundamental force (warning massive tangent approaching) some how linked to thought processing it not only ties in well to the fact that "dark matters" form shifts between good and bad because of surrounding intentions but also with many fantasies think intellect in many games empowers magic spells and also works into the "I believe in You trope" as though merely having enough people believing something effects magic to do things further working into some popular takes on youkai where having a significant amount of people believing in a tale or rumor makes it more "there" another thing is in DandD focus is necessary for some spells this could explain wand, runes, magic circles, and visual differences between spells, combining certain spells often takes real chemistry into account (to further elaborate on my theory watch the wizards grandson anime or irregular at magic high school) especially when it comes to potions this means magic or wish power is based in reality so for example knowing fire is powered by fueled and integrating it into you spell can make the spell more powerful or less mentally taxing thus costing less "mana" then knowing fire is just plasma would make it even more so "powerful" perhaps the reason for this is the fact that the more effort you put into making your spells more real the less wish power is needed in warping reality. extra thoughts: I think machines can cast spells they just need a magic power source or be connected to wish power in some way, I think magic isn't really made some sort of parallel molecule or material but rather a massive pool of energy that of kinetic energy but in a more metaphysical sense but not quit souls (which might be why you can even see ghosts or "banish them" with magic another interesting tidbit is spirits are also largely attached to magic [i.e youkai]), as a religious person and very scientific person this makes me ponder not only the theoretical physics of wish power but also the very very theoretical field of metaphysics. (yes there's more congrats to those with a lot of reading endurance) extra questions what is anti magic? is it magic with a negative charge or something enterally different , what are curses another category of magic? also this makes Kirby even more of my favorite series due to galactic nova and the ancients because they make so much more sense

Whoa, that is a legitimately compelling backstory you have created, especially with how you tied it with real life science and even the Shiver Star's origins. The writing itself is really cool, from the exposition feeling very real to the Dark Matter speaking in this archaic, alien-like dialect. In regards to the latter, I also admire the way you integrated the numbers 0 and 2. Genius! One of my biggest draws into the Kirby franchise was its amazing cast of villains, and Dark Matter in particular (more specifically, 0/02) stands to this day as my favorite video game villain. This is largely due to how it contrasts against an otherwise "lighter-hearted" game and how it such a mysterious entity, leaving us to ponder on pretty much everything (almost as if those gaps are a metaphorical "dark matter" in and of themselves). In the sense of the latter, it does indeed draw parallels to our real life theoretical dark matter, doesn't it?

Thanks so much! Because the dark matter trilogy got such little backstory, I felt like that was an opportunity to get extremely creative (and now I'm just putting it [them?] everywhere, haha) I think that, even apart from Dark Matter, "light-hearted game with mysterious entities" describes soooo many things in Kirby. I mean, all of the magical artifacts that end up corrupting their users (e.g., Sectonia's mirror; Haltmann's Star Dream; Magolor's master crown) -- so there's definitely lots of room to speculate on the interconnectedness

Yeah, I still am waiting a bit for Star Allies to be a bit older so that people won't get upset about spoilers, BUT there are some things there that definitely feel promising that I want to try to wrap into the cover story series eventually. But I'll try to get through some of the older game villains some more until more time has passed

Flipper Jr. I definitely want to explore this in future cover stories, but I think the general abandonment of shiver star is because of a planet-wide calamity. (That is, the earth going through ice age probably wasn't great for anyone living.) Definitely going to do one on Marx! What I want to do is release a cover story album explaining my theories on what drives the villains -- the problem is there are actually very few Kirby songs that are licenseable for sale. (So, for example, I did Haltmann and Sectonia covers before I thought about doing an album...and they are not currently licenseable.) Star Allies isn't licenseable, and plus, I feel like people would get really upset at spoilers if I did a cover story so soon after release, lol. So, to try to tell the story, I have Zero Two (which you've already heard), will do Factory Investigations (to bring Haltmann back into the picture), Dedede (already done), Green Greens (already done), Marx, Magolor, and Drawcia.

WINK WINK; I definitely want to flesh this out more, story-wise. Realistically, for the album I'm doing, I can only cover a limited selection songs though. I could do Dark Matter's theme in KDL2, but it's pretty short, so I probably won't. Unfortunately, Hyper Zone is not licenseable. I think I'm going to try to tie several different parts together with a cover story for Factory Investigations -- I can go further into Shiver Star's story, while also bringing in Haltmann (since Haltmann's theme won't be licenseable for an album)

I Know Storywise, Magalor dose Have a Happy Ending (*His Appearance & Portion of "Kirby's Dream Collection" is Cannon*) Not sure about Marx's Though, I hope that The upcoming DLC for Him in The New "Kirby Star Allies" would have a good In-story explanation for His Reappearance & Why He's on Kirby's Side this time around.

Missed responding to your comments! I have a lot of bad habits on sax so I don't know if i'm the best person to ask for advice, but I think sax is pretty easy. The best thing I can say is look up exercises on mouth piece buzzing (there are videos on this where people will discuss the tone you should get on just the mouthpiece and reed), and then practice that often. Also, practice long notes. Those two things will get your sound sooooo much better so quickly.

Really good, and it’s interesting that you chose to use the perspective of a research team on Shiver Star. However. The first half is boring science talk! Lame! It’s a creative take on 02’s backstory, I’ll give you that, but how much more fun would it have been for the BOTH of us if you had just done some insane 02 ramblings!? He is literally a dark god who is incapable of positive emotion. So much missed potential here, dude! Great cover nonetheless.

Thanks so much for commenting! So glad to see you had such a strong reaction and thought on this. But I'll challenge you a bit and provide some context of what I wanted to do: I want to show how Kirby's universe clearly combines magic *with* science. Magic (like "a dark god who is incapable of positive emotion") can't be explained. It just is what it is. But advanced science can. The Kirby universe clearly meant for science and magic to be merged: "dark matter", "miracle matter", "clockwork stars", "alternate dimensions", and so on. So, by establishing universe physics for the Kirby universe, we can turn magic into something with an explanation -- you can make what appears to be pure evil into something with a rational (albeit twisted) explanation. Dark matter holds our universe together, but it cannot be seen no matter what. It must be so lonely. If only it could tell us of its seething rage and envy at the rest of us. There's a lot that I want to go through with this, lore-wise. It's clear that the power to reshape worlds through the power of one's own desire and wish is deeply embedded in the Kirby universe's physics. As I explored in my Haltmann cover, clockwork stars are literally a piece of technology that can grant wishes, but at the cost of a person's sanity. I want to explore more about magical artifacts like the amazing mirror, star rod, etc., that ultimately are really just advanced technology created by "The Ancients" -- these technologies also grant great power, but also corrupt those who use them (check out my Moonstruck Blossom cover, for another example).
