i definitely figured music from kirby gcn was reused in rtdl along with lots of other assets, considering rtdl had a development hell of at least 9 years if i can recall

I can't believe that the canceled GameCube Kirby game became the foundation for the modern Kirby games, and they reuse assets from said cancelled GameCube Kirby game. Kirby's Return to DreamLand brought in the majority of the assets such as the gameplay, artstlye, and the music, basically Kirby GCN became Kirby's Return to DreamLand. Kirby Triple Deluxe also reused the gameplay and artstyle. Kirby Planet Robobot retained the dynamic camera angles for certain levels of the game. Kirby Star Allies brought back playing with three partners. I still wish to this day that Kirby GCN got made.

Another Dimension originally being a theme for the halberd works so well that now I'm not going to be able to unhear it.

The fact that HAL was able to, despite everything, save all three cancelled projects and transform them into one is still astounding. And even then, all of those 3 projects inspired almost all of the pre-Switch Kumazaki era games: - the pop-up book theme from the third project, the UI from the 3D platform project, and most of the music, as well as roughly 80% of the 3D assets, went to Return to Dream Land - the dynamic camera angles and tech setting from the original GameCube project went to Planet Robobot - the “cubic” 3D platform title became the foundation for 3D Rumble, which then expanded into Blowout Blast - “Ride Everyone” from the original project became a key element of Star Allies’ multiplayer component It’d be extremely neat if we ever get to see Kirby GCN and the other two projects in action. Like, their own thing.

That's interesting... I really wanted to know more about the lost Kirby game. It's awesome that we got to see some music being used in the next Kirby games!

4:53 really stood out to me. It’s a song that I enjoy for on how funky it sounds in Return to Dreamland. But here, it sounds more like an actual Kirby song. Reminds me a bit of 64 the Crystal Shards.

Kirby GCN ost are literally the ost for Kirby's Return to Dreamland. But okay, the devs have their own reasons for that and I can agree.

I honestly wish Nintendo stuck with the idea of making this game a reality, it would have been really fun The more we find out about it, the more sad I get

I'm so glad they waited for RTDL for the final version of GCN. They cooked with this game and its remaster. Best Kirby hands down.

Dude every once in a while I would get into a little zone and just try and find out as much about this game as I could, and it was just a fun little task. Seeing all the scrapped stuff for this game was always very intruiging.

what's interesting is that while the songs speculated to come from the gcn project have their own leitmotif (the trailer music/sky tower leitmotif), the songs speculated to have come from the wii project have their own, as well. it can be heard here and there throughout the rtdl soundtrack, including an unused track, but it can also be heard during the final boss theme from epic yarn.

Actually the triple deluxe version of cookie country or st_plants is the real gcn version As it uses more of the soundfont found in the unused sky tower theme

There's also b_night, which is Morpho Knight's theme in Star Allies.

For the Kirby series (especially for me as a Singaporean being a fan of this series while we recently are celebrating National Day), it’s very interesting that the series have games that were not released but rather most mechanics and the music from the 'cancelled’ game were carried over to a new and fully released game and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land is no exception. With Kirby’s Return to Dream Land being our first ‘proper’ of traditional Kirby games (released in 2011) since the spin-off Kirby’s Epic Yarn (released in 2010), I was surprised that even the first stage track ‘The Adventure Begins’ is not a official track but a remixed ‘full’ version instead while the version used in Kirby Triple Deluxe is actually a ‘true’ version of this track that was meant to be in the cancelled game. Most music in Kirby’s Return to Dream Land are from the cancelled gamecube game except for the ‘unused’ theme (which sounds like a mix of Kirby’s Dream Land 3 - Grass Land 3 and Kirby Squeak Squad soundfonts) while the game also have ‘beta’ versions (like Over the Hills and Sky Tower) of the in-game music which I am also shocked but yet all of the tracks still are nice to listen. Thankfully the series now has a proper 3D mainline game ‘’Kirby and the Forgotten Land’’ while Kirby’s Return to Dream Land received a remake the following year while majority of the music in the original itself have been reused (especially in Kirby Triple Deluxe) / remixed in nearly every subsequent Kirby games (even in Kirby and the Forgotten Land) showing how well the original game has been developed and well-loved

Neat find!! I remember hearing about a Kirby 64 sequel that was going to be released on the Nintendo "Dolphin" back in the day. This game's existence is basically my headcanon.

Does anyone know how these were proven to be for Kirby GCN? What I find most interesting is Return to Dreamland has several music references to past titles, which fits the whole "return" theme, but according to this some of those remixes were made for Kirby GCN.

From what I know, 4:52 sounds like the beta version of Crystal Dungeons (which is found in KRTDL/KRTDLDX) I don't remember where I found the beta music for CD, but I do know that that sounds just like it!

This confirms that the game eventualy turned into return to dreamland

Knowing how RtD’s OST sounded, I’m kinda surprised Dimensional Rift/Looming Darkness, Egg Engines 3, and the continue music didn’t originate from the GameCube prototype but rather the 2D Wii prototype. And likewise, I’m extremely surprised a lot of these tracks originated from the first build of the game and not from a much later phase in which RtD as we know it today had fully entered development.

This is INSANE. Especially the fact sky tower is this old, I always found it odd robobot’s main theme took notes from sky tower/st_castle.

I was kind of convinced that this was an early Return To Dreamland. You can even see what appears to be a beta version of Magolor's first boss form in the artwork.

They actually reused the soundtrack in return to dreamland. And a lot of the concepts actually got transferred over to that game as well.

Here's some other reused songs that I can think of: One of the Extra Statges in Triple Deluxe contains a "remix" of The Adventure Begins, which is really just an early rendition from Kirby GCN Yin-Yarn's theme was also ripped from Kirby GCN as well. Explaining why it sounds so differently from the rest of that game's OST And I don't know how true this is since I haven't seen anybody else mention it, but apparently Morpho Knight's theme was also from this game as well. But once again, I don't know how true it is or not lol

Most of the enemies from the GCN Kirby game were able to be seen in Kirby Air Ride. I would always think that game is what was left of most of the stuff we've seen in the canceled game we could've gotten. If the game is leaked out there someday and the fans work together to restore and fully complete the game with functional co op and all of what Nintendo and HAL couldn't do before. I would kill to see what could've been before Return to Dreamland was what WE know today.

This is why to me kirby adventure gcn game IS return to dreamland, alot from it ended up there, also i dont think the friend mechanic is in star allies is inspired by the gcn title directly, its a new and original mechanic as being able to make a friend out of your copy ability that p2 can play as started in kirby super star, but due to small screen not able to support 4 players they cancelled it but revived it with the wii, then made it so since the multicolor kirby where a thing now, they made those to be playable as well as meta knight cuz why not? Bandana waddle dee and our boy triple D, and yeah changed over time but it was made, also for switch online snes they made the originally never released star fox 2, so their not afraid of making new games for old consoles, if gamecube gets added they should finish the original project

I think the in-game version of Crystal Dungeons could be the original. The file names don't clearly indicate which came first (the other is 'st_doukutu'). Because 'st_wado2' has more of a retro sound like the 'KbyW' tracks and the unused Sky Tower ('st_castle2'), it may have been intended for the first Wii build. I want to suggest VS Waddle Tank, VS Mecha Kawasaki, Kirby Dance (Short) and Kirby Dance (Long) as possible GCN tracks. Slightly different versions of the former two with the 'sub_' prefix exist ('sub_wado1', 'sub_kawasaki1'), matching the GCN naming scheme of mostly 'st_' and 'b_', and they don't sound out of place with the known GCN songs. The Kirby dances have the 'x_' prefix ('x_dance2_normal', 'x_cleardance'). Also, there's one fanfare we know for sure is from GCN. There's an earlier version of 'You Got a Part Sphere!' with the file name 'fanfare_gck'. This version of the fanfare has actually gone on to be used in many later Kirby games, such as Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Kirby Star Allies. Some more not here: • Blazing! Boss Battle ('b_dedede01') • Green Greens (Return to Dream Land) ('st_comic02') • Slippery Steps ('st_comic01') • Crash! Mid-Boss Tower ('b_dedede02') • Mid-Boss Battle in Another World ('b_m01')

does the st_halberd theme suggest that originally you were going to pilot the halberd instead of landia? if so thats really fascinating, especially since they ended up using that idea again in robobot, just without the same music.

I honestly hate Return to Dreamland and I am disappointed that the GameCube title was reworked this hard into a disappointment. I hope that if the GameCube gets a legacy console, it will have the lost Kirby game like how that legacy SNES revived Star Fox 2, but sadly that game was already completed and the GameCube Kirby was only 75% completed.
