Actually, Lolo/Lala first appeared in a game called "Eggerland" from 1985 in Japan/Europe only, with some Famicom/Disk System entries before they decided to bring the series westside with Adventures of Lolo.

Another interesting thing worth note about Starfy is it's actually the forth installment in a franchise that got its start on the GBA but was never brought here and was originally called Staffy. Heck, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga had an ad for it in the Yoshi Theater... which isn't present in the 3DS version.

I actually have the Legendary Starfy. And I know that you must have not made it to the final boss, which is a monstrous cgi amalgamation.
