Most of the time it isn't whispy's fault as he is possessed occasionally, like dedede. Only one time did he genuinely fight kirby, and that was the first game. He has since been "good pals" with kirby according to Kirby Wikia.

It's not really a secret, seeing how the game provides you with the Fire ability before his battles in Fruity Forest and Falluna Moon. Wouldn't the first thing you do with the Fire ability before a boss battle be to give your friends the Sizzle effect?

Backwards. You unlock them after their boss battle and befriend them at the Dream Palace. However, you can also befriend them WITHOUT having to go to a Dream Palace by throwing a Friend Heart at them after the boss fight.
