It's insane how well you were able to detect the appeal of this entire game just from this suite, because you pretty much hit the nail on the head with the analysis. I've always been super impressed by how this song uses the 8-bit chiptune style. Usually, that sound is very closely associated with upbeat and hyperactive emotions, as it immediately makes you picture playing video games as a kid. Kirby music is strong in those elements for sure, but it's so unique and interesting how this song uses it in a genuinely eerie manner; these instruments that are supposed to represent simplicity and fun now droning on in the background to a really somber and foreboding tune. It's not nostalgia as if you're reliving your childhood, but as if you're seeing a ghost of a bygone era. That's the feeling it gives me, at least.
@EatnAllMyBunk
@EatnAllMyBunk 7 месяцев назад
I agree totally. It always struck me how the chiptune instruments are first introduced during Void's theme, before evolving into Green greens. The chiptune in Void's theme almost feels like calling back to a nostalgic past that never happened. Void doesn't have the happy memories that Kirby does because of the unfortunate circumstances it was born into, but that chiptune shows that it once had the potential to live a joyful life similar to kirby's, if things had happened a little differently.

The gameboy section is in fact a callback to green greens, the main kirby theme, which originated in Kirby's Dreamland, Kirby's first game, on the gameboy! Some othe parts reference this theme, just with instruments

The basic Kirby formula goes as follows: One day Kirby was out having fun Suddenly, someone decided to rain on his parade and/or steal his food And so, Kirby went on a bloody rampage across the planet to right this wrong In the end, Kirby killed God, and all was right again

Fun fact: the random chiptune is a reference to the original Kirby's Dream Land (obviously), but the interesting thing is that the timestamp it happens at is the date of the original release of Kirby's Dream Land in Japan (4/27 if I'm not mistaken)

This is actually the second Kirby final boss theme you’ve listened to! The first was Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit, the final boss theme from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This music is for the 4 phases of the final boss, Void Termina, and the additional secret final phase simply called Void. Also, you are spot on about that chiptune section being an intentional throwback. An extremely common song/melody in the Kirby franchise that shows up throughout pretty much every game in the franchise and in tons of different songs is “Green Greens”, which originated in the first Kirby game on the original Game Boy and is literally the first song you hear after starting the game. That chiptune section not only explicitly reconstructs the original song’s music, but also lays out very plainly that the melody of the entire suite here is based off of that same Green Greens melody. There’s definitely thematic elements to this that relates to the game as a whole (this game does a ton to celebrate the franchise as a whole), but this was also the last Kirby game with traditional 2D gameplay before the franchise went 3D with Forgotten Land. So it’s both a callback and a capstone all in one, which is one of the reasons this song (and especially the final movement, for me at least) is so highly regarded. I could gush about Kirby music and how lovingly it handles its legacy for a very long time (every single game remixes tons of old themes in new ways), but I’ll cut myself off, lol.

@ikirbeeburgr 8 месяцев назад
technically for this song and Roche limit you fight another phase before them, and then another final phase right after, so if you think of it that way the same goes for moonstruck blossom, especially since the phase before it is a separate song & fight. Really the main difference is that Moonstruck Blossom isn't as grand scale as the other two, they have multiple phases, but theyre all still part of the same song & the same fight, whereas moonstruck blossom only has 2 at best, not including the separate fight before
@IllegallySam
@IllegallySam 8 месяцев назад
@@ikirbeeburgr No, not really? Before Void Termina, you fight an entirely different boss (Hyness) and before Fecto Elfilis, you fight a very related but still different boss (Fecto Forgo). And after both, it isn’t another phase, it’s essentially an interactive cutscene (or a platforming section, kinda, for Fecto Elfilis). Moonstruck Blossom is specifically just phase 2 of Sectonia, proceeded by phase 1 and followed by phase 3 (or Soul in the True Arena). They are all the same boss, even if they are separated.

Two Planets Approach the Roche limit and Moonstruck Blossom are the final boss theme of their respective Kirby games. They always deliver on final acts! What’s so significant about this song is actually the lore implications told. The final boss is apparently related to Kirby himself and a long stay antagonist called dark matter. They are both made from the same void. The 4 and final movement are called backs to the original Kirby’s Dreamland on GameBoy, the very first title. The song used is called Green Greens, which is basically the Mario 1-1 of Kirby. It’s a classic song you hear a lot. Btw, usually for the Final boss theme the composer is Hirokazu Ando, who has been around since the 2nd game. The OG that’s still making music today is Jun Ishikawa, but he does mostly stage music.

This game is the Avengers end game of Kirby games! Although the story never says it, it's a story of two fates. One whose life consists of naps, full bellies, playing in the sun with friends, and one whose life is completely void of all love and hope, and is filled with absolute darkness and emptiness. Kirby must face the true ultimate being whose soul purpose is to destroy everything. (The first movement of the suite is called playfully crushing stars to give some perspective) Kirby must gather and rescue the friends he's made throughout his last 25 years (at the time) to help if they have a chance of even surviving. It's such a beautiful piece, and I'm so happy it's finally here! No other videogame music is quite like Kirby music

My absolutley favorite kirby piece. Im not ashamed to admit the last movement made me cry with nostalgia... a lot. When green greens hit its just over. Also, most people wont ever hear the final phase of this song, because its hidden behind 3 bossrushs you have to unlock each after the other, and only in the final phase of the very last boss you hear it, and its probably over much faster, cause either you die fast, or the boss before the song ends. That they made the song this long anyways is just amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it. Actually, the title of this song is missing the meaning corresponding to a certain Kanji character when translated from Japanese to English. In Japanese, this song is called "星羅征く旅人". "星" means "Star", "羅" means "Line up" or "String together", "征く" means "Conquering", and "旅人" means "Traveler". In my opinion, a translation that retains the meaning of all the Kanji characters would be something like "A traveler who goes around and conquers a string of stars". Also, at a 30th Anniversary Music Festival held in Japan, the general director of this game described the final movement of this song as a "Requiem". To understand its reason, we may need to know a little about Kirby's history, or we may not need to know it at all. All we know for sure is that the word is very significant.
@CassiusStelar

@C_Arson

I'm not entirely sure if your comment is a critique of the translation or just a fun fact, but I will say that I think "The Star-Conquering Traveler" is an excellent English name for this song. The translation you provided may be closer to the Japanese original, but it feels a bit wordy and less elegant compared to the official English name, and "The Star-Conquering Traveler" already implies that multiple stars are being conquered, so specifying that there's a string of stars being conquered feels like a superfluous detail to me (it probably sounds cooler in Japanese, I'm only talking about how it sounds in English).

Its finally here, and, Well, your assumptions were correct. This song, no, this entire *game*, star allies, was a love letter to the entire history of kirby. From the very first kirby game, to this, the story, world, and music kept evolving. The very first kirby game, kirby's dreamland was a very simple game. It released on the gameboy, and had cheerful 8-bit music. It was the beginning. As kirby games kept releasing, slowly, but surely, the scope, and world kept evolving, turning into the impressive songs you know now. Star allies, was the kirby series culmination. Everything was cranked up to the max, the setting, set in deep space exploring the galaxy, the story, featuring a cult set on reviving their dark lord, and the music, calling back on kirby games past. This final boss can be called nothing short of the greatest threat in kirby history. A dark god, born of the void, no. it is the void itself. Empty of all compassion and care, and it takes the heart of kirby, to fill it. The fourth movement, where the action and tension was at its peak, was not the final phase of the boss. That final movement, where the piano and 8-bit kicked in, is the final phase of the battle. The toughest challange in the game, backed by the solemn reminder of kirby past
@LucasTigy2

it's not so much about kirby's past. it's taking that theme and inverting it as to express the duality of void and kirby

19:01 Honestly I think you really nailed it on the head at this part, saying that almost the whole world of Kirby is in this song, AND that it’s a celebration. It really is. One thing I absolutely love about the Kirby franchise is that the creators and the team genuinely have an intense love for this character and the world they’ve built. And they show this with everything they put in their games, especially here in Star Allies and in this song. Star Allies is definitely a “controversial” game in terms of how well it holds up compared to other games, but one thing I think every Kirby fan can agree on is that it’s a celebration of everything Kirby. Kirby’s history, his legacy, everything. Uh oh, I wrote a lot 😵‍💫

Let's go! Always beautiful to see more exposure to Kirby music that isn't just Green Greens/Gourmet Race/Dedede. That said, The Star-Conquering Traveler heavily features Green Greens in the fourth and final movements. That's what you were hearing in that retro Game Boy segment near the end! I loved that you described this track as chaotic, and that it 'contains the universe', because the final boss is made of Chaos, and it is implied to have possibly been the origin of all things. The composer for this track is Hirokazu Ando, who has been a composer on this series since the second game. He also composed Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit and Moonstruck Blossom, which are two other final boss themes which you've listened to on the channel.

Little context behind the fight You're essentially fighting a godly beast that has been around since ancient times, constantly going through the cycle of death and rebirth. Depending on whether powerful positive or negative emotions are present during his birth, he can be good or evil in his current incarnation. The chaotic music decending into a slower, sad tune is the tragedy of a being that could have been born a good guy, but was fueled by hatred and obsession, turning him into a monster that has to be defeated. That's kirby magic for you Also this is a bit of theory territory, but the being you fight is named Void, as in empty. He's born a husk that resonates with it's surroundings to turn good or evil. However, this being mimic's Kirby's own face, leading fans to theorize that Void is the tragedy of a Kirby without friends. The theme of the game is friendship, and to take that idea and flip it around on it's head, it would make a very thematic final boss if that's the case, and the music would reflect this flawlessly Oh also the fight initially takes place in outer space so you're right on the money with that one

Yes !! I have been WAITING for this. This is one of my favorite Kirby tracks ever, it makes me so emotional. It's so.... I don't know how to describe it, but knowing what this final boss is, and what Kirby himself is, it's so tragic, and yet our pink puffball trudges on through, and maybe yet, there is hope ? Hope for not only us, but for the boss itself. You can't undo the horrors that have happened, but you can hope for a better life and move forwards towards the future, with people who will push you in the right direction by your side. Maybe a bit deep, but man i just feel so much about this track, the final movement so desperate and contemplative. The whole track itself reveals a lot about what the boss is, even without additional information. The epic and slightly scary grandeur of movements 1 and 3 perfectly paint the image of a great beast out of control. And then the more techno beats in the "inner" parts of fight ( movements 2 and 4 ) evoke to me the notion that something is manufactured, shaped by external influences. And the boss's main melody is so deeply tied to the narrative that at the end when it turns into chiptune, it reveals itself to be a minor key version of the very first Kirby level theme : Green Greens. It was right under our noses the whole time ! It's just great storytelling. And great music. I love it so much.

The fact this extremely important boss battle, incredibly monumental moment in the series, is mainly composed by remixing Kirby's theme into... This, especially in the last two phases. Even without the context of why this is happening, there's so much emotion and thought in every single note. The live concert of the entire suite (and also a final boss medley) they did for the 30th anniversary was mindboggling. I hope with all the comments in the past videos youve been making of kirby it was clear enough, but just to reiterate, the general knowledge Kirby is known of online is very very different and EXTREMELY reductive, and in most cases actively wrong and upsetting, compared to how his games actually play, which the songs you've listened to hopefully made clear. You can boil down mario or whatever to "bowser kidnaps princess, go get it back". But kirby is very very different, there's a lot more to his stories, partially because Kirby is actually not owned by nintendo at all! Nintendo is just the publisher, Hal Laboratory is the one behind everything kirby! To give an example, kingdom hearts' stories and lore are very similar to Kirby's, especially in this final boss!

The last few movements of this theme weave in the motif from Green Greens (the theme of the first level in the very first Kirby game) it’s a theme that’s constantly being reused in the series due to its importance and iconic-ness to the series as a whole. In the same way Green Hill Zone’s theme is for the Sonic series. BUT I’ve found this particular use of Green Greens incredibly clever for 2 reasons. 1) This game as a whole is like a love letter to Kirby fans. It celebrates the series by containing many beloved characters from throughout the years. It makes perfect sense to use this theme here for nostalgia purposes but more interestingly… 2) Kirby has faced a ton of eldritch horrors and god-like beings in his journey, but lore wise, this boss could potentially be the MOST THREATENING entity to the Kirby universe EVER. It’s name is Void, like an endless empty space, and it’s a being made from dark energy, loneliness, and negative emotion. When facing the core/soul of the boss you can see that it possess a face strikingly similar to Kirby’s own face… It’s theorized that Kirby himself is a being made from an endless amount of energy (luckily with a good heart), but what happens if a being with God-slaying power like Kirby is born instead with negative emotion?? This fight takes place moments after Void is born, and in the fight it behaves as if it is still in the process of developing and evolving. Because of this, Kirby and friends are able to defeat Void right before it develops into the worst possible enemy… a second, sinister Kirby. The last movement of the song (Sparkling Star) is where the song slows, and the chip-tune version of the Green Greens theme plays ominously as Void is defeated, just before it can be fully born. I view this usage of the theme as not only a nostalgia moment, but also a hint as to what Void could have been had it been allowed to fully form. Just as Green Greens is used as the song marking Kirby’s introduction to the world. It’s used here to mark the birth of Void, a being made in the same manner as Kirby, ready to start its adventures… of EVILLLL dun dun dunnn

just gonna chuck this out there but Kirby star allies is an anniversary celebration game. there are all sorts of references and nods to previous games in the mechanics, the level design, and ESPECIALLY the music. The developers specifically said that the game was meant to mark the end of an era for kirby (after this game was forgotten land where kirby transitioned to 3D in a full mainline title for the first time, I believe you covered the final boss track for that game too). this track in particular has plenty of motifs, the most recognisable one being the first level track in the first kirby game, green greens. Because this game is a sort of sendoff to this style of kirby games Hal wanted it to be as full on as possible. I think the best part is that I can feel through the screen that the developers love this game, that they put all their love into this title, and they went all out to make this and in a way thank the fans for staying around for so long.

This is one of my favorite Kirby themes! It's basically the theme of a chaos god called Void that is the origin for both Kirby and the entity/essence of evil in Kirby's universe, which is Dark Matter/Zero. Void reincarnates itself into either an entity of good or evil depending on the emotions it encounters in the universe and the ones held by those who summon it. The song and its movements do a GREAT job showing the power and emotions of each phase of the fight. Getting into theory territory a bit, I see its other form, Void Termina, as its sort of outer shell or encasing to protect the "embryo" (Void) that's inside it. Void itself seems to be the chaos god's neutral state, as during the battle with it, we can see both traits for Kirby AND Dark Matter/Zero in its expressions and mannerisms. The person who summoned it was filled with spite and hate, so throughout the fight, it's slowly reincarnating into the evil essence of Dark Matter/Zero, gaining more and more of its appearances and attacks. However, after you beat it, it has Kirby's signature smile as it fades away, and with the unlock of Kirby's classic look after the fact, I like to think that it reincarnated into another Kirby after being filled with Kirby's light! :D

Green Greens has always been Kirby's personal leitmotif, playing in most final boss tracks ever since Return to Dreamland, usually symbolizing Kirby's defiance in the face of the villains' plans for domination. But here? It takes on a MUCH more somber meaning, thanks to heavy connections between Void Termina, Zero, and even Kirby himself... To the point rhat... They're all just on the same coin. Our boy was just lucky to have friends. Void wasn't.

Interesting point, I've always thought Kirby's Triumphant Return to be a larger motif for Kirby, due to how it appears in so many songs throughout the franchise

This is like the culmination of the entire 2D Kirby series into one huge medley in the sound of Kirby Star Allies. That's also the reason why it sounds so chaotic because it is meant to be chaotic since the boss you fight is basically a black hole as Void is Chaos.

I'm very late to this one,but when I saw it I knew I had to see how you reacted to THAT bit of the song. Pretty much every Kirby fan I've seen or talked to was affected in some way by that bit. Even now I get chills and tear up. You were pretty much right with "it's like going back in time to a Gameboy game", because that part is 'Green Greens', the first level of the first game. It's where everything began, and it's often considered Kirby's personal theme (with his leitmotif coming from a segment of it). But here, it's played in a mournful minor instead of its usual jolly major. And there is a reason for this! Your analysis is pretty spot on for a surface level, but there's more from the game perspective. The boss, named Void, is thought to be a 'Kirby' who somehow became evil, and the "going back in time" is it going through its memories to remember what it used to be, and it goes right back to the very first game. It's kind of a shame you don't know much of Kirby, as most Kirby music is layers of leitmotifs stacked atop each other, and this one is pretty unique for instead just being two conflicting full themes, swinging between Void's "Song of Supplication" and Kirby's "Green Greens", showing not only the fight going on in the game, but the inner struggle inside Void's soul. I always thought this suite was an excellent example of musical storytelling, to the point that I actually wrote an essay about it. Kirby might not be the most popular franchise out there, but he is very beloved, by his fans and creators alike. You can really tell that HAL love Kirby and put so much care into everything they do. Kirby games might be bright, fun and "childish", but they never dumb it down or put less than the full effort into each game.

You can't imagine how much I'm grateful for this reaction, this is my favourite music, just that, shortly, just my favourite. It has everything, First movement: Star destroying Playing, confidant yet threatening, you are fighting one of not your greatest foe, Second movement: Embryo's vessel mysterious/uncomfortable, the unnerving cocoon protecting the true void, Third movement: Wings of sorrows and all heavens, take back to fight the armor body, epic/divine, Fourth movement:The hope of birth dynamic/tense, you realize at this moment that you're not fighting a foe, but a missed friend, he's at his full power now but don't gine up, Fifth movement: Shimmering star, emotional/nostalgic, you can still save him, go Kirby of the star, make your last ally of this adventure and give him thed love he deserved. The whole ost (except maybe Embryo's vessel) has the motif of green greens, the very first level and one of the most iconic kirby ost, the end even has a 8bit remix connecting Kirby to Void. (If you want very summared lore: Void is the origin of all matters, depending on if the energy he's in contact with is positive or negative he'll either become a Kirby or a Dark matter (the main antagonist)). The final battle at hand, Void takes his first step toward a new age. In place of tyrannical rage will he find... naptime? Gentle breezes? He may even dream again... *A dream of friends reunited!* If you want to try other Kirby music I recomend: every final boss since Return to dreamland, Roar of Dedede, Dedede's royal payback, Sword of the surviving guardian, 0², Deluxe others final boss (Suprem lord's coronation a remix of C-R-O-W-N-E-D, and Mistiltein Tree crown without a ruler).

One of the other more famous motifs in Kirby Games besides Gourmet Race is the Green Greens Motif. Particularly in a lot of the final boss themes (Magolor, Star Dream, etc…) So, if you’re unaware of the Green Greens motif, then I do recommend that you at least listen to the original track (it is an upbeat repeatable chip tune melody, like you said about describing Kirby themes) because you’ll be able to identify the motif more easily when listening to more later tracks (or perhaps even listening back to prior songs you’ve heard before from this franchise)

My time to shine 11:56 callback to the first kirby game stage song ever, since Kirby originates from the final boss of this game. Ah yes, the kirby game where he fought against a cult who tried to revive their deity, and it ended up being the origin of every matter in the Kirby Lore, Dream matter, Heart matter, Soul matter and Dark matter, and Kirby of course.

I think this is the way that music like this would be written: Establish a stand in for a noun, in the form of a sequence of notes that can be messed with while still being recognizable. (I think this is called leitmotif?) using things like key changes, tempo changes, other instruments, and potentially other musical nouns to carry that musical noun through a narrative. essentially, the end result is not a sequence of notes, but a sequence of events that occur centered around a specific person, place, or thing.

If I'm not mistaken the fight this is the theme of is the longest single boss fight in the series. Each movement being a phase. A fight with a degourer or worlds in which by the end kirby has the enemy become just like him, as void reacts in turn with that which it encounters. Void termina is this reality destroying collosi because it first intrracted with a death cult of Uber powerful mages. This fight is friggin awesome.

I wanna be one of the first to comment on this because I love Kirby and I'm an avid lore enjoyer of the franchise: so to put it briefly: The boss you fight while this theme plays is a resurrected god of destruction called "Void Termina" while its true form, its "soul" is called just "Void." Through Information granted from pause screens throughout the fight, it is speculated that Kirby is actually a being of infinite energy, one of which is reincarnated and takes shape from the energy around it. Kirby was created from positive energy, Void was created from negative energy. Void is basically a "Kirby" that grew up in loneliness, desolation, and sadness, and only knows how to destroy. In the fight Void takes on several forms similar to that of past Kirby bosses, and even takes on a form that looks a lot like Kirby himself. It's theorized that Void may be the source of a lot of the evil you fight amongst the games. Kirby and Void are two sides of the same coin, hence all of the callbacks to the very first theme you hear from the very first game, Green Greens.

Star Conquering Traveler: The Dancing Mad of Kirby Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit: The One-Winged Angel of Kirby Star Conquering Traveler incorporates multiple genres of music into a single piece that uses a repeating leitmotif across different movements before going full blast in the final movement, just like Dancing Mad. Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit meanwhile tries to mix multiple genres of music into a single movement that’s constantly changing from one bar to the next like a chameleon. Star Conquering Traveler is the final boss theme of a game that attempts to incorporate all the best elements of “traditional” Kirby at the expense of game balance, much like FF6 at the time. Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit is the final boss theme of a game that’s a stark departure from tradition and tries to redefine the series, much like FF7 at the time. So yeah, you were right when you said it reminds you of Dancing Mad.

Void Termina is the Final boss, and apart of the reason why it feels like a chronicle of the kirby series is Void Termina is basically Kirby himself. It starts out as this huge behemoth that takes make forms and uses a lot of familiar abilities. Completely unrecognizeable to Kirby. But as you get further along the fight you start to see some familiar things. Inside the big behemoth, a large blob transforming into various different enemies kirby has faced in the past as well as sharing the same face as kirby. And essentially kirby's species is a species that transforms based on it's environment. Kirby- represents the ultimate good. Calling back to the transformations of Void Termina are specific transformations of past enemies: Zero+Dark Matter, who're very big antagonists that had a whole saga in the past. those enemies were basically considered the ultimate evil. And Void termina is the base, the origin of *all* matter and forms. Depending on it's environment, Void Termina could become something like kirby. Or it could become something like Zero or Dark Matter. You can see other forms of outside influence in the way Void Termina attacks. Affected by the negative intentions of Hyness, Void Termina became a destroyer of worlds. Absorbing the energy of the three mage sisters- Void Termina wields flame, ice, and electricity like what the sisters had wielded earlier in the game. Additionally the weapons of the 3, sword, spear, and axe are *all* wieleded by Void Termina. Just like how kirby absorbs the ability of others. I don't know how to end this, so I'll just apologize for this kinda incoherrent rambling lol.

I dunno if the lore dump is justified but here you go: This entire game you fight to prevent a cult leader from using the stolen souls of people to summon the ancient dark lord, Void Termina Once he is finally summoned, you fight the outer layer, which is very demonic in nature, only for his head to fall off and for you to be sucked inside (kind of like how Kirby might suck up an enemy) And its core is revealed to be... a pink ball with a face made of two oval eyes and a circle mouth The dark lord... comes from the same source as Kirby... the void. The void is an ancient god, reincarnating into different powerful beings depending on if they're exposed to positive and negative energy. Void Termina is the void exposed to pure negative energy, and Kirby is the inverse, pure positivity. This is why Kirby is so powerful, able to slay gods. Because he is the most powerful thing possible. Good, innocence, heroism incarnate. He kills not only kills the devil, but purifies it, to rebirth it in joy.

As you're not familiar with the series, the 4th and 5th movement use as main melody the song "Green Greens" which is the theme of the first level in Kirby's Dream Land, and also heavily associated with Kirby and the series in general as their main theme song, essentially their "Super Mario Bros. Ground Theme" That's why near the end it goes full chip-tune. And your guess is spot on, as the first Kirby game was on the Gameboy!

We should get you to do a stream where you listen to every single version of Green Greens in the Kirby franchise ! That's the quintessential Kirby song. And the main melody that this final boss is based on. Conveniently there is a video that released in 2019 of an artist collaboration animating a cute Kirby walking to the beat of all the versions thus far ( as of the date of the video at least ). It's called GREEN GREENS: ALL OF IT (1992-2018) and i really recommend it !

I do wish the version you'd got had looped through the shorter movements, usually they loop once yeah! Kirby composers (there's two older main ones, and one or two newer main ones, and the older ones are still here) have just kept one-upping themselves on last boss themes. They really pull out the stops for them, especially since there are usually optional "true" last bosses that get the final theme that is only accessible by doing harder content in the game, as a kind of reward.
