Excellent question! The rules say "After attacking, the samurai automatically switches stances" so I'd interpret that as you do switch stances regardless of whether the attack was successful. But I could absolutely be wrong. Maybe @LuckyDuckGames can chime in?

Yes, it still switches stance. This was addressed in the BGG forum. After attacking, automatically switch stance. Successful, unsuccessful or cancelled is still an attack.

Every round you play two cards. The second card played will be set aside and you won't have access to that card the next turn. So after you flip both cards for the next round the first card moves back to your hand and the set aside card from the previous round moves back into your hand. Then the second card this round gets set aside. The only time you won't have a card set aside is the first turn of the game and if you play your special card as the second card. Specials get discarded so it won't get set aside. Hopefully this makes sense. The easiest thing is to make a routine of it. Play two, reveal cards, pick up the first card and the set aside card (if there is one). Slide second card over. Play two, reveal, pick up the first card and the set aside card (if there is one) and move second card over. Repeat.
