Because on last albums James and Lars act like boses and he don't feel like part of band and i can think how unambitious he feels in Metallica. They just give hm riff and say "do solo". If you look old Metallica songs, almost every pre solo riff is done by Kirk. He make riff which inspires him to do solos and that's resaon why his new solos are uninspired.

Why does Kirk hammet get so much hate? I don’t get it. He’s a great guitar player who has written countless legendary riffs, and inspired every single guitar player in the world under age 40. Kirk is imprecise in his shredding and reuses a ton of motifs. But after hearing some of this I think that might be partly the result of what Kirk called the "tone police" within Metallica. Growing up with the band and studying James' and Kirk's techniques, it's clear now that he can do so much more outside of that box. It's just that I've wanted him to step outside the box within Metallica but he hasn't, and it's seemingly not up to him.

Yeah, I got a nice vibe of Opeth in "The Incantation". When the song swells down into a lush, eastern flavour with nice sounds and details that you would hear in Opeth's moments like that. Good call. I also got Kirks love for Scorpions ex Guitarist Uli Jon Roth in "The Jinn". Some of those more exotic heavy riffs reminded me of Scorpions "Sails of Charon". Theres a lot of cool, off Metallica's tangent music here that I personally would love Kirk to introduce into Metallica's sound. This EP is brilliant, and inventive.

It just sucks what James and Lars have done with Kirk, Jason and Rob. I do understand that most Metallica songs are mostly just James coming up with riffs, and Lars arranging them and then added bass (where applicable), leads, solos (where applicable), lyrics and vocals, so I don't see why with a lessened role, and less pay, they couldn't just allow Kirk and Jason, or Kirk and Rob, just to go their own way a bit when they don't have recording or touring commitments. FFS! Most of the good bass parts on _Load_ and _Reload_ are Hetfield's bass lines.

Kirk's got a good ear for melody, obviously knows his western music history, and has good lick/lead ideas, but it shows that he's never had the opportunity to really hone his songwriting chops. If he's able to practice more and tighten up his ideas, he's got some great material in him. I can understand how he'd have a [lost] phone with 600 ideas in it - he just needs better focus and to really, really push himself to determine his own voice. Solid first effort though from a 40 year veteran and member of the biggest band on the planet.

Back in the early days of Blind Illusion my musical Brother K.H would take full control of the production of our sound in the studio. Most notably Trilogy of Terror and the Slow Death demo . He actually produced The Sane Asylum though his mgmt would not allow his name to be listed . Many of the nuances and textures were his doing as well as every solo's final outcome. I would play several takes until he decided that we got it. Actually every decision pertaining to the sound and quality of the entire project fell on his shoulders and for that we to this day we are thankful. This E.P Portals is a work of Art! It is exactly what I expected , a brilliant soundtrack to a secret screenplay. I listen to this quite often and every time I do I am transported in my mind and I see the movie that is the result of Kirk's vision. with love and respect MHB

@Dub Jubs but you don't contradict my comment: that any real Metalhead knows they haven't produced anything decent, in terms of Metal, post black album. I'm 43 yo and a life long Metalhead. Metallica still to this day are my favourite band - and I was first introduced to them when I was 8 years old. But as any true Metalhead will tell you, Metallica were the bastions of Metal, the world over, prior to Load. The Metal community, by n large, felt betrayed by Load - not because Metallica had so called 'sold out' but because it wasn't Metal. And yes I'm still bitter about the direction they took 26yrs later. I think that album, was in part, an attempt to explore their musical interests outside of Metal i.e. James' love of blues etc. But it also reflected Metallica's members' inability to create music outside of Metallica. That is, unlike most other bands, they never allowed each to play in serious side projects - which they should have (which would lead to Jason's departure). Maybe if they'd allowed themselves to do this, Metallica would've remained solely in the realm of Metal. Which, in my view, is where it should have stayed.
