In a rare film from a solo performance, 81-year-old Kirk McGee, accompanied by Hubert Gregory and members of the Grand Ole Opry Staff Band, performs Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Milk 'em in the Evening Blues", while electric guitarist Joe Edwards is given a shave.

I always loved Kirk and his brother Sam. Kirk was a great clawhammer banjo player and one of my favorite songs of theirs was "Roll On Buddy, Roll On".

I have one of Kirk's fiddles... It was in rough shape but had it repaired and she's playing great again.

Thanks for posting all that you do Robert. You and me have the save taste of music. I grew up listening to Sam and Kirk on the Opry. Sure miss them. I keep up with you too. Love your music and follow you too. I have emailed you before and you responded. Keep up the good work buddy.

I used to hang out backstage with the pioneers of the show at the Opry on Saturday nights, and I was there that particular night. Wonderful and fun memory.

I'd love to hear more about that if you'd like to share some stories.

Thanks for posting. I wish Kirk's guitar was more audible. Interesting that he seems to be playing from an F position.

It's something that Kirk McGee was great, and yet he wasn't the greatest guitar player in his family--or at least he wasn't the most legendary. What an entertainer!

...all that nonsense only serves to draw attention away from the REAL star performer,..- Kirk McGee !

"All that nonsense" is actually called Grand Ole Opry. The Opry was built on being spontaneous, including things like this. The Opry of today has NOTHING like this whatsoever - it is an entirely different show altogether now. The Opry performers, especially the earlier ones, drew from Vaudeville. This is the stuff we true Opry fans love so much
