It doesn't matter. 3D chess isn't any different than normal chess. It's just chunks of the board are at different elevations, which really only means there are a few extra rules about how to move from one step to the next. And they're really not that much. The deal is, Kirk has always supposed to have been a genius...even by Vulcan standards. But, he's not an academic in most scenarios the way Vulcans almost always are. He's not really a science-genius (though he's no slouch), he's more of an artistic genius...and he has a phenomenal memory (which is actually 99% of how to play chess effectively, and also the whole reason Bobby Fischer now HATES the game...in a manner of speaking, anyway). Kirk isn't a scientist...he's an explorer...an adventurer. It's why he's also a space-playboy. It's just that different versions of the character have leaned a bit more heavily on different aspects of the character. Chris Pine did a fine enough job...but I felt they shied away a bit too much from really digging into just how competent Kirk really is. But, that was also Cadet Kirk...from a timeline where he grew up an only child without a father...and was basically a flat-out delinquent. I prefer this version of Kirk. It's the most like Shatner's, but without the garbage campiness from the 60s.
an aspect of kirk that was mentieond or shown in TOS but only briefly is kirks skill with 3d chess. he can beat spock in 3d chess... that is no easy feat.
True story-what was meant to be the first appearance of Captain Kirk as played by Shatner in the pilot episode in 1966 was Kirk playing Spock in chess and beating him. Cool to see some of the charm and wit of the character introduced to a new generation with a new actor who respects the history and legacy of the character in the same way.
At the start of the TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Kirk and his good friend Lt. Gary Mitchell were playing Chess. It has been theorized that Gary Mitchell introduced Kirk to a 'little' Lab Technician named Carol Marcus.
I loved how much of Toronto they actually showed off for this episode! I also found it funny since the studio they film at is actually on the outskirts of Toronto anyway
That was part of the joke early in the episode where this version of Kirk guesses they are in New York City, and La'an says they are obviously in Toronto.
I like this Kirk. The kelvin timeline Kirk was an idiot cowboy. TOS Kirk, was smart. He was a bookworm, who knew how and when to take action. I’m glad SNW is bringing that Kirk back.
Yea, it's reason why Kelvin-kirk's Kobyashi-maru test always rubbed me the wrong way. It only illustrated his arrogance. Original kirk hacked his test too, but he put all his Stat points towards Reputation, so it give him a boost when he opened dialogue with the Klingons. He illustrated diplomacy.
@@Zivin yes, he had a different upbringing. But then he still becomes the youngest captain with no real accomplishments. Cadet to captain just like that. That’s not how things work. The whole Kelvin universe just didn’t make any sense to me.
They should go all the way and let him have a new love interest/wife and kids too. La'an is much more interesting and has much more potential. Fantastic actress, fantastic episode.

I have seen so many negative reviews on this episode. I am a stickler for old ST, and I loved this episode. Even love watching NSW, that saying a lot. This episode is up there as a favorite. I enjoyed the interaction between them. The chess scene was awesome. I loved how there were no hard feelings from the other players losing to Kirk. Very civil and with the handshake.🙂 Great storyline. My only thing was the "Lt. Kirk" at the end?
It's not a uniform. How is this escaping you? There's a difference between civilian clothing and a uniform. Did you think you stumbled unto a mike drop moment? Try harder.

I just love this scene, our polymer banknotes and the first Canadian vertical $10 note... and it might be hard to see, but at 2:22, you can see part of the Canadian Vimy memorial in France that's on the back of the $20 note that's under the knight.
Apparently the story was supposed to take place in NYC and the chess hustling would have worked better in Union Square. Because of budget and logistics they used Toronto instead...
He beat Spock in 3D Chess at leat once. In another episode, when Kirk was to be found guilty by the marcial court, he quipped that maybe Spock would be able to beat his next captain. But I don't remember any reference to this skill since TOS.
Presumably it went on for longer than that, with other instances not filmed. Not EVERYTHING has to be on-screen. There is such a thing as implied narrative.
I would have thought there'd be SOME technology in the uniforms to regulate temperature. Even so, I don't know why they didn't just have to buy jackets and why they threw their uniforms away.
Dude...mall cops are blind, deaf, and stupid. That alarm doesn't go off, they don't do shit. They're in another world until something explicitly gets their attention. They don't even notice a kid peeing in one of the decorative plants while facing the damn kid. Or, they notice and don't wanna deal with it.
Data used his Starfleet badge to play poker when he time traveled -- I'm guessing there are some precious metals worth bartering with in Kirk's badge as well.
Love the episode! But… 1. How much money did he win playing chess? Hotdogs and clothes are fine. But their hotel suite is probs $500 a night! 2. They bribed their way into the US and back to Canada? How much money did Kirk win?
@@hankeng6375 and let's not forget kirk isn't even a average 3d chess player in his day. he is a chess expert he's so good he can beat spock at 3d chess... that's like saying you are so good you can beat the computer at chess.
They didn't pick him because of physical appearance, doofus. Why should Kirk look like Shatner? That's not the point. His characteristics and confidence is similar and that should be the goal.

If you're going to use them as a metric of resemblance then this actor passes that test as well. They do not like the actors before them - they pass of as the characters before them as far as the visual template is concerned but they do not resemble the actors that portrayed those characters before them. If you think that - then you need glasses. Imagine thinking that Dick Sargeant riposte is a mike drop. That, in and of itself, is proof of your dissonance.
Seems like the primary timeline is under threat from the temporal wars yes, I think it's actually pretty meta and could be be good if done well. They can fudge the dates so long as they make GOOD Trek which this is, and I can care about the characters and the universe, which I do. The primary timeline has a certain feel to it, we all know which one it is, it's why kelvin and discovery and even picard feel so off.
Making orders of magnitude more money doing movies TV, movie, and voice actors don't cross over particularly often because they are different disciplines, different schedules, different pay grades, etc There's also rumors that the TV and film continuities for Star Trek are required to stay separate and can't crossover due to legal issues between CBS and Paramount
