What kind of connectors do you use? They look like N-type, but those are threaded, which is obviously impossible in this setup. Some modification or altogether different connector?
Generally for safety. If there is thunderstorm nearby you can disconnect antennas from your radio. I assume radio is remotely controlled, and it's placed where good antennas could be installed, in contrast to place where operator is. Operator's location can be unsuitable to put a serious antenna because of HOA or other regulation, or lack of place, or maybe noise floor from neighbouring buildings is really high.
