Open shelving is a nightmare in a kitchen if you really cook - and often. Sear meat a few times and you'll go back to closed cabinets.

I feel the same way about statement range hoods. I always sear meat/fish and finish in oven. I have a chimney style stainless range hood which i clean constantly.

Same here. Cooking is a messy job. Greasy and sticky are not our friends!

If it would have made a mess of open shelves it probably made a mess of your cabinet fronts and walls/ceilings. Or you could just turn that vanity hood on.

I live in Europe and these kitchens are larger than my living room. It's easy to create something luxurious if you have acres at your disposal. The real challenge is when you have 30 square feet...

Yeah. I said too... Lots of things is totaly diferent scale in USA. But sometimes it is reasonable. They need cars, they need buy in bulk. Ok they need those two. Everything else is just excesive...

Yes, but I’ll note that it took us >20 years to remodel our large kitchen because we couldn’t afford the materials. (And, when we did start the remodel, it cost even more than we expected due to areas with serious damage concealed by the old floor, extensive rewiring, etc.). If you have a small kitchen, you’re not buying as much material, and, if you need repairs, hopefully they’re smaller in scale. I mean, part of the reason we bought this house was to have a big kitchen. And, we told ourselves the kitchen was hideous and we would have to change it ASAP. We just really didn’t think through how size would impact things.
@CH-px1fw
@CH-px1fw 3 месяца назад
@@luciezabakova7266excessive to you but we use and enjoy what we decide to put in our house. Also, interesting how you think you know how we all live and that we all live the same in this big ass country which also has a large variation of types of homes from tiny to huge. “They need cars. They need buy in bulk” 😂 really? 😂 No. So funny.

My personal most hated kitchen design things: 1.) Open shelving because of dusting and cluttered look. 2.) Tiles that have grout used on kitchen counters--very dirty. 3.) Bar stool seating is uncomfortable to me. 3.) No garbage disposal sucks! 4.) Lazy Susans and Drawers--I feel like these often break over time. 5.) Bad lighting-might e okay when you're young, but when you get older, it's a struggle. 6.) Visible appliance and cluttered counters 7.) Appliances/layout just not being functional. Having to walk far to get to things. Those are just a few ideas.

I agree with someone who thinks open shelving is a nightmare. However, it’s not a new trend. All of the units in our Brooklyn condo building came with open shelving in 1998. Also, for a small kitchen it’s probably the least practical when you don’t have enough storage.

Same in Germany. The cooking area is now invisible, I love it. I never understand, why they want those massive ugly hoods, especially in open rooms. The microwave above the stove is a nightmare. I wanted the dishwasher at knee level, but it was too expensive.

Sounds awful... I hate induction tops... my best pans don't work on them and they burn the crap out of food if you use stainless steel stuff like they recommend... I had one a d ripped it out about a year later a d put a gas range back in. The induction top went into the dumpster. And now my food Cooks well... no more burnt food... That was an expensive mistake I won't make again... my chef friends laughed and gave me the "I told you so's"... no restraunt used induction tops.... other than to boil water. That's the one thing they're great at... boiling water fast.... but they also burn the crap out of food... if you only boil water on your range then induction makes sense.... but if you like to fry stuff... you'll hate it....

A big plus would be to get a design without useless corners in cabinets ,u know those dark holes where u put things ,hard to reach ,stuff to forget about? Wall ovens for people who really cook and don’t want to stand over the heat while at the stove, stove and appliances ergonomic heights ,my stove at table hight saves my back, dishwasher should be higher ,save on bending,… free standing appliances are better so when your fridge has to be changed u don’t have to replace a whole cabinet or maybe the whole kitchen… real kitchen ideas for people that don’t do tv dinners

Alot of these “trends” are very Jean Stoffer Design. The coffee bar and the butlers pantry are two examples. So glad to see timeless design like this coming around. Less trendy, more classic.❤

I love most of these trends, and I think I will still be using them even after decades. Having lived in the tropics prior to coming to a wintery country, I love the outdoor kitchen, the walk in pantry (where I can organize all my supplies, produce/preserves, stocks, wine, sacks of rice/flour and baking supplies, store plates and unused appliances). The incorporated eat in dining table to the island especially for small families. I love the beverage station, especially for people who entertain a lot. The recessed lighting gives a different mood/vibe. The solid backsplash just makes sense when it comes to cleaning and not dealing with discolored/moldy grout. I am OK with open shelving but more for decorative purpose. For the pendant lights, I am still OK with it since I live a bright space to prep food. However, with smaller space and with all these new kitchen smaller appliances/gadgets coming out lately, it would be nice for designers/builders to incorporate more built in " multifunctional airfryer ovens", instead of the regular ovens especially in smaller spaces. There should be more "appliance garage" for blenders, coffee maker, toaster, etc) to hide more clutter in the counter. Designers always emphasize "avoiding clutter" but these things are used "daily" but not much is being done about it.

I ripped mine out after a year and went back to gas.... I hated induction... all my super good cooking nonstick pans didn't work on it so I had to get stainless steel pans which are a nightmare to cook woth and clean.... and they burn everything you cook in them.... induction went straight I to the garbage with a "good riddance" cheer... and a nice professional gas range went back in. So nice to have a range that works properly again... the only downside is a big pot of tea takes a couple minutes longer to boil, thats how they sell them, they do a sisde by side comparison of how much faster it boils water... welll thats not good when you have recipes that meed to cook for specific times at specific temps, theyre just really terrible to cook with and firget about folkowing any recipes you find or know or want to try, they wont work with induction, youll have to relearn how to cook everything and figure out your own cook times and temps, I've been cooking on ranges my entire life and am a pretty good cook... I can cook on gas, electric heating elements, a grill, a griddle, or open flame campfire and get good results.... I rarely ever got good results on induction tops.

Maybe what was overlooked in the Induction cooking section is that the past 5 years or so, but now made perfect, is the inclusion of air suction within the Induction plate. No more good is needed which saves space/clean look. The air suction unit can be thrown in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. Another point (I'm from Europe where independence of Russian gas is important to survival of our value system) is the move away from fossil fuels and the damage it does to your health. I think cooking one evening on gas is the same as standing for 5 minutes next to an exhaust of a school bus (but do look it up, I'm probably wrong here).

I toughed it out for about a year but got tired of burnt food a d went back to a good old natural gas range like every other professional chef uses.... no restraunt uses induction range tops... they all use natural gas... because it works the best....

The induction cooktop sounds great until you need to get it replaced. My grandparents home was built in 1974 with the induction cooktop and the in wall oven. But when the oven stopped working we couldn’t find a replacement in the exact size without cutting a larger hole therefore needing an electrician etc. so they didn’t have a working oven for nearly a decade. So I advise to rethink that option.

Wow the cook top trend is our standrad in Europe. We do let's say... apliances tower. Next to pantry cabinet(cause we have just cabinets, no walk in partry.) In "tower" we have oven and microwave above. Both practicaly on eye level. Convenient btw. And than stove somewhere in triangle. You know what triangle I mean... (sink, stove, fridge). I love fire for cooking, but I get married 10 years ago, we moved together and kitchen was already renovated. We have caremaic stove(looks same as induction) and I have to admit it is more practical. More easy to clean and you can use it as work space too. I sacrifice my fire for my mental health :D

It is so true, my family is from Europe, most people have flats and there living style is totally different. I love that at least where I am from originally you don't gather as much in your homes as out in cafe's, restaurants or even just the local square. Europe has better developed public transit as well. In North America (Im Canadian) things are more spread out, not as much great transit unless your somewhere like NYC and people invest a lot into there homes if they can, and as much as there is a movement around being more intentional, you are 100% correct there are some things we just don't have here. However with all trends, it is for inspiration, and even in a small space there are great ideas you can incorporate into any design :). Thank you for your feedback and for watching!

In my new kitchen I'm getting an amazing Wolf induction cooktop with a statement hood. Also a marble slab backsplash. I don't really like those bold colors in kitchens though so mine will be more neutral (not white though, I dislike that even more than bold colors). I wish I had room for a butler's pantry, or even a drink station, but alas, there just isn't anywhere to put them.

Nice video! The induction cooktop will always be flush-mounted (inset) in a modern design and will never stick out like in those sample pictures (that is so 90ties :-)). Moreover they are energy efficient and that is the main reason why this technology is changing (climate change anyone?). Lightning is of course really important in the kitchen and ambient lightning will again help to save energy, because you do not need the full photo studio vibe while just making a sandwich. The butler's pantry is called a backup kitchen in Europe and makes a lot of sense for open concept designs in larger homes (a place that can be a bit messy and outside the view from the couch). Solid surface, outdoor kitchens are not really new trends when it comes to Europe, for colors certainly still white, black, dark grey and wood.

Hi Ania. My question is around mixing paint finishes. We are putting in a green shaker kitchen with a twist - the curved pulls will give a scalloped edge to the frames. We have pretty much committed to going matt on the cabinets to get the tone of the green right. The island will be a mineral blue, but the question is whether to go matt again or mix with satin or semi gloss. The bench top is semi-gloss composite and is also the backspace

What people gona learn from here? First of al, it should be storage zone, which are vertical tall cabinets up to the ceiling. And working zone which are countertops. The more countetops, the more mess in the kitchen. More storage, less countertop is a way to go. Open shelves is a big no, corner kitchen is a big no - it makes a kitchen too congestive. Kitchen should be linear. And vertically linear. That is a trend!

Open shelving would be toxic in my kitchen where I actually prepare at least 2 meals a day…and do my baking. I can vision that greasy nightmare! I prefer to eat off of clean dishes…not some that sit out 24/7 collecting every air born germ possible. If you don’t cook in the kitchen, go for it. You’ll have something pretty to look at. But much, much more to dust. Just my opinion.

Gas stove over electric 1000x

They would have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. Stayed in a rental while our house was being built and was forced to use an electric stove. Horror show. So happy to have my gas stove again.

Seriously who needs a "statement vent hood"? My gas range vents out the top and it's fine. If you need a vent to outside, put one in the ceiling.

If your open shelf’s have grease in them; - they are in the wrong area - the kitchen is poorly planned - the kitchen is too small The open shelf’s are an accent, not a staple.

It is for inspiration really... I hope there are elements that you can take away. Like painted cabinets, you could totally DIY that :)
@makeapositivedifference

@@InteriorDesignHubwhat paint would you suggest if someone wanted to DIY paint kitchen cabinets? I'm interested in doing that, but it's hard to decide among the types of paint and paint brands to use. For reference...I currently have builder grade oak cabinets from a home built in the late 1990's, and I have a black range hood and black and stainless steel appliances.

I'm not someone who is great with DIY. I'm envious of those that do it though, I would search DIY videos for some tried and tested tid bits. My experience is working with new installs or professional painters to have them re spray. Which if you can do, highly recommend. They can make them look brand new!

Most of us watching will not have kitchens this luxurious and some of us don’t even want the mortgage attached to such extravagance. It might be fun to find inexpensive ways to use their ideas though in our kitchens. Champagne taste on a beer budget is what a contractor friend told me I had. 😂

Loathe, loathe, loathe induction hobs, it never looks clean and a greasy or wet finger will negate the whole idea of controllability, I cannot wait to get rid of the one we inherited in this house we bought, any joy I got out of cooking has completely left me.

If you are going to do a major kitchen remodel or go custom; hire a kitchen designer who KNOWS HOW TO COOK. Pot fillers are stupid and are a MAJOR risk of leakage or accidental valve opening resulting in a major flood. People want a pot filler so as not to carry a heavy pot of water to the stove. But what happens after you cook that huge pot of unhealthy pasta? You have to carry it to the sink to drain. Open shelves are an invasion for dust grease and constant arranging to keep things tidy. If you live in earthquake country another reason NOT to have open shelving. Use quality easy to maintain materials. Be careful of flooring and countertops that are trendy today and tacky tomorrow.

I fully agree about the pot filler.... I never understood the thought of 'ease of filling', when you are literally caring super hot water afterwords to drain in most cases. If anything they need a way to drain without lifting LOL

Not a fan of induction cooking ; it’s very restrictive concerning pot pan circumference as many burners used simultaneously, not a fan of open shelves in a kitchen just too much work with grease in air from cooking lays on shelf items that sit on open shelves & dust is everywhere. Butlers pantry is old world idea & used to be standard & it’s very helpful highly functional. No way solid surface back splash cheapens the esthetic. Oh no corian not good. Seems people want exhaust hoods to be a diamond in the kitchen, stmt hood be a focal point - pendant lights left the industry 5-6 years ago. Canada goes view things differently . Outdoor kitchens require a designer & needs to be done professionally.

I dont like islands at all. They are very rare in Europe. Instead I would bring a large table in the kitchen and I am happy to see this trend is coming back. To prepare food, to eat, to make homework. Bar stools are uncomfortable and dining rooms arent used in real live. The open floor concept is gone. We dont want to have the dishwasher in the living room and work there too.
