Kite is the world's first DIY Modular Smartphone kit. Using this kit, common electronic components (sensors, raspberry Pi HATs & pHATs, batteries, antennas) & a 3D printer, you can build the many different devices that have all the features of a smartphone, yet customized to meet your exact needs. We have many 3D printable designs to get you started.
This video shows a few examples of customized devices built with Kite: a phone with a scrolling LED badge (+flashlight) on the back, a phone with OLED displays at the back for notification and retro gaming, a phone where the back is adapted to become a Braille keypad, and finally a phone that runs of AA batteries and includes an SMA connector for external antennas. Watch the video for all the details!
We are aiming to make Kite available soon on Kickstarter. For more information & updates (including early bird information), please subscribe at www.kiteboard.i... .

They did try; the market research data Google received just showed that most of the people who were polled couldn't be arsed to assemble their own smartphone. It proved to be too niche of a market to be profitable for them, so they scrapped the project.

For profit is fine and even admirable. Its the aversion to open sourced hardware sales. The troll like jealousy of anything that could possibly be patented. Anything smacking of monopolistic tendencies. IE: John Dear, Apple, Maytag, GE and many others. If your buisness was house building, you could not demand that only through your company can repairs be done. But for some companies who have lawyers stacked three stories high there is no limit to the snakeoil they can sell.

Probably has something to do with the major phone manufacturers not wanting us to be able to repair phones, but to just have to buy new ones when components fail. Like the non removable battery.

Very interesting. I do hope you'll be successful! Would it be possible to implement *hardware* switches for turning off camera, microphone, and GPS? That way you could brand it 'Privacy Phone' too.
@KitePhone
@KitePhone 6 лет назад
Camera can be easily removed by the user. Same for microphone. To turn off GPS and modem, one could erase the Android modem partition.
@rupert274
@rupert274 5 лет назад
I think he meant so they were quick and easy to switch on and off. Opening up the phone each time isn't quick. I'm not sure how quick it would be to erase and restore the GPS/modem compared to a flicking a physical switch.

@@rupert274 The easiest way to do it is to cut off power from modules :D Camera? Shut down power line, there is no camera anymore. Microphone? The same way. GPS / modem? Firstly, you need to make them a separated modules from the rest of device, and then use some switches to cut the power and signal from them when you want to be "incognoto mode". The biggest challenge is to put half of dozen switches somewhere in the smartphone to protect them from switching randomly during everyday use...

If 3d Printers were much higher in proliferation, I could really see this spreading out, but don't give up this Idea has merit, however, maybe you should focus on small batch production and offering the kits in batches using the sales of one batch to fund the next, as well as take orders on several 'models' of common setups for the Kite Phone, at of course a slight premium since your team would be assembling them. Even in smaller sales numbers you can still turn a decent profit. This is definitely an enthusiast product, which makes it a little difficult to use kickstarter to fund.

This is good progress! But if I'm gonna invest in something modular, upgradeable, Where are the upgrade options that *Matter?* Upcoming Kite2 is based on Snapdragon 625, offering 300mbits/sec download... My LG G5 is almost 2 generations behind, on the snapdragon 820. It sports 600Mbits/sec download. A fully 2 year old design outclasses the kite that isn't even available yet. Where's the upgradeability? Where's the chance to migrate? Where is my chance to be on the cutting edge?

Is it possible to install FreePBX/Asterisk and use Kite as a GSM/Voip gateway? For example Raspberry on FreePBX OS, with installed GSM module would work perfectly for that. On the other hand in mainstream phones it is not possible to intercept the audio stream from-to the GSM module and redirect it to installed applications. How does Kite work for this specific issue?

Is it possible to make one with a electronic id card reader - this is needed to activate the device, and need to stay there. it could also be a micro sim, provided states gives this as an option - and only LTE connection? I hate electronic identification app, that you need a smartphone, and pay a normal sim connection, in an open-source community, it should be free connection, just a finger-print reader, and few apps, like ID, National Health service, tax service, bank service, personal wallet to make payments, passport service. and Global LTE provided by your country of origin valid globally. No phone calls functionality, but maybe some emergency calls only. What do you think?
